Lawngrasses.com is a guide to help you determine the best type of grass or grass alternative to plant for your location, desired appearance, uses and maintenance requirements.
By learning some basic knowledge, along with investigating what types of grass or alternative grass grows successfully in your area, you can select the correct type of grass and plant it by either seeding, sodding, sprigging or plugging your new lawn, pasture or sports grass turf. It is easy to choose the correct type of grass using our Easy 4 step selection system.
At this point you need to decide if you wish to plant a traditional lawn grass or plant a eco-friendly lawn grass alternative. Then proceed on to Step 1 of the 4 Steps To Choosing A Lawn Grass. If you are planting a lawn grass alternative, then this four step system will also help you determine which type will grow in your location. Grab some paper and a pen and let's get started!
The area that your grass will planted and live is your first decision. This step in the process will help you determine whether you need a warm season, cool season grass or perhaps a grass seed mixture of both. You will determine this by examining the transition zone map in conjunction with the other maps we have provided. This allows you to find your state or location so that you can better determine what grasses will survive and grow best.
This critical information applies to lawn, turf and pasture uses for grass types. It does you no good to buy and plant a warm season grass only to find that the hard freeze that is normal for your winter will kill the grass. Same goes for cool season grasses when the summer temps shrivel your grass to nothing. Finding the right grass seed or grass seed mixture is an important step in planting and obtaining a great lawn.
GO TO STEP 1- Determine if you need warm season, cool season or a grass seed mixture.
Step 2 will provide assistance with helping you answer the following questions. How much effort, time, and money do you want to spend on your lawn?... Not just in the beginning, but for the rest of your lawn or turf grass's life -- which can be a lifetime. Secondly, what uses you will have for your lawn?
GO TO STEP 2 - Determining the type of grass based on input preferences and usage.
You should also consider the differences in the way various grass types grow. The way grass grows has a direct correlation to the amount of wear tolerance as well as how fast the grass will 'repair' after injury or damage. Some grass types grow in bunches and some grass grows by 'creeping'. The 'look' or appearance of the grass type is important as well the intended usage.
GO TO STEP 3 - Choosing a type of grass that meets your criteria for maintenance and appearance.

Minnesota River levee … -

NEW ULM - The Minnesota River flood levee in New Ulm is nearly completed.
Brian Mathiowetz, president of Mathiowetz Construction Co., said the vast majority of work on the massive levee wrapped up on Oct. 31.
The contractor is awaiting the delivery of three sluice gates, which are used to close off storm sewer piping in a flood. Everything else, including the grass seeding of the levee, has been completed. Installation of the sluice gates should only take a few hours.
Staff photo by Josh Moniz The Minnesota River flood levee in New Ulm is effectively completed after months of work, pending only the installation of three sluice gates. The project took approximately 150,000 cubic yards of clay.
Staff photo by Josh Moniz A No Trespassing sign is posted near the newly constructed levee on the Minnesota River in New Ulm. The levee is built on private property.
"They're specific items that are only really made in one place. You just have to order, and [the company] tells you when you'll get them," said Mathiowetz.
Mathiowetz was pleased with how well construction of the levee project went. No negative incidents occurred during the hauling of 5,300 truck loads of levee materials through the middle of New Ulm. The levee took approximately 150,000 cubic yards of clay.
The levee is 814 feet above sea level, or 2 feet above the 100-year flood mark. It is intended to effectively end the problem of chronic spring flooding for property owners along the Minnesota River. If a flood exceeds the 100-year flood mark, the broad top is designed to allow additional sandbagging.
The need for a levee became apparent after recent floods threatened property with back yards to the river. Although sandbagging and then construction of temporary berms addressed the problem, city officials opted for a permanent solution.
The project is expected to cost $2.26 million, with $1 million covered by a grant through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The remaining cost will be worked out between the City of New Ulm and the affected land owners. The tentative plan is to have the City cover 75 percent of the cost and to assess the remaining cost among the land owners. The City will be finalizing the project in the near future.

PENTWATER The partial reopening of Business 31, from Park Street to U.S. 31 north to Ludington was greeted with lots of enthusiasm this week.
The southern end of the Business 31 detour is still closed, with traffic being routed north on Clymer, then west to Hancock as drivers come into Pentwater from Monroe Road.
Various streets that need to be repaired will be surveyed and those decisions will be made according to the money available for repairs, the Pentwater Village Council heard Monday.
Grass seeding for those streets already resurfaced will be done in the spring of 2013.
Village sign
Village President Juanita Pierman reported the new village sign is working well and there have been many good comments from residents and visitors.
Leaf Pickup
DPW crews are working hard to get leaves picked up, according to Village Manager Jim Miller. The next couple of weeks should see a vast improvement, with the crews working every day they can until all is clear or they get snowed out.

Marine Hall Gardens Site Progress
Marine Hall Gardens, Fleetwood on a VERY windy day in December. The William Pye team are working hard and getting a good facial exfoliation at the same time. Project background: Marine Hall Gardens is a Sea Change project in Fleetwood, Lancashire. Client, Wyre BC are working with BCA Landscape and William Pye to deliver a space for performance and perambling. Large pre-cast sections of the performance area reflect the original art-deco style of the Marine Hall, which was built in the 1930s in the fashion of the time. And in the floors of those areas, close by public seating, will be bronze inserts with the themes Sea and Sky -- reflecting the culture and community of Fleetwood. Words and sayings cast into the bronze are all based on ideas from the public and the designs were drawn up after public consultations held by designers BCA Landscape. References include the Cod Army and magic words spoken by a seafront fortune teller in the 1950s. The platform will look out over a grassed amphitheatre and, beyond that, an open fountain where many will be tempted to dodge the water. The Gardens are due to open at the end of January with planting and grass seeding work taking place in Spring. http://www.bcalandscape.co.ukFrom:torrolocosgrannyViews:110 0ratingsTime:01:08More inEntertainment

Hydroseeding
If you want a lawn and not a kitchen garden, then your turf should be a uniform sea of green If you are planning on building or redoing a park, recreational area or sports field, or just your own lawn, then instead of using sod or seeding by hand, hydro seeding may be your answer! Hydroseeding is an environmentally conscience method of seeding developed in the US, which apart from being fast and effective, is quite inexpensive. What is hydroseeding? Hydro seeding mixes the essential ingredients all in one place and at one time and sprays the mixture onto a prepared area using a hose. The mixture includes: different types of grass seeds; fertilizer; protective moisture-retaining mulch for the seed and soil; erosion control additives, soil pH modifier; and water (the most important ingredient for seed germination). Hidrovetes Ltd uses this highly efficient American grass seeding technology for both residential and commercial hydroseeding projects. Hidrovetes Ltd. is also the exclusive distributor for Turbo Technologies Ltd. in Central and Eastern Europe in regards to the sale of hydroseeding equipment and supplies. If you hear of a company who offers hydro seeding in Hungary, then most likely, they bought there system and supplies from us.From:Pter SchnViews:897 1ratingsTime:10:38More inScience Technology
