5 Harmful Chemicals in Your Toilet Cleaner That You Must Be Very Afraid Of – The Better India - January 31, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Stay away from acids and chemicals that can burn your skin and damage your tissues!

When we buy commercial cleaning products, we expect them to do one thing: clean.

But what about the toxic ingredients in them that are poisonous if ingested, harmful if inhaled or touched, and can also contribute to indoor air pollution?

    1. Hydrochloric acid (HCl)

Did you know that every commercial toilet cleaner in India contains about 10 per cent HCl?

Also known as muriatic acid, Hydrochloric acid (HCl) has a corrosive effect on human tissues and can cause irreversible contact damage to the skin, eyes, lungs and other internal organs upon contact.

    2. Sodium lauryl ether sulfate (or Sodium Laureth Sulfate, SLES)

With properties similar to soap, SLES is used to clean stubborn stains in the bathroomthe acid is known to reduce the surface tension of water. However, SLES is a known irritant, that much like HCl, can cause damage to eyes and the skin. It is advised to wear protective wear if you are handling the synthetic acid in a concentrated form.

    3. Cetrimonium chloride (CTAC)

Another example of a chemical widely used in our toilet cleaners, Cetrimonium chloride or Cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride can also irritate skin and eyes. Extremely dangerous if swallowed, it is recommended that you remove your contact lenses and consult your physician immediately if even a couple of droplets come in contact.

    4. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

Sodium hydroxide is a highly corrosive acid that can cause serious burns to your body. One should always keep a safe distance from the acid and wear protective gear while handling it for NaOH is known to decompose proteins and lipids in our body tissues.

If it comes in contact with eyes, sodium chloride has the potential to blind you! And although used in trace quantities, toilet cleaners are a surefire way of letting this hazardous chemical enter our homes.

    5. Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach)

The bleach comes with a clear warning to keep away from eyes, ears and nose. Of course, you wont use sodium hypochlorite directly, but as an ingredient in your toilet cleaner, it still has the potential to severely irritate your skin and eyes. In such a case, it is best to rush to your physician and seek expert guidance.

You may flush out the liquid, but the traces of acid remain on the seat even after. Plus, the toxic chemicals go down the gutter and in the lakes, rivers or sea near you and pollute the water bodies, posing as a threat to the ecosystem there.

Thankfully, reliable, planet-friendly cleaners are now just a click away. Your laundry, dishwashing, floor and toilet cleaning is all set to get safe. Follow this link to know how.

For Love of Nature: Resolving to help wildlife in 2020 – Lynchburg News and Advance - January 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Happy 2020! This year, instead of hindsight being 2020, wouldnt it be nice if foresight were 2020?

Unless youve been hiding under a rock, you know the natural world is taking a huge hit from climate change, habitat destruction and pollution, resulting in mass extinction.

While the challenges sometimes seem insurmountable, there are ways all of us can help leave a better world for future generations.

Create wildlife habitat. Who doesnt like flowers? Native flowering plants help pollinators like bees and butterflies. Birds and other wildlife need bushes, brush piles and trees to raise young and avoid predators.

So do yourself a favor, too, and start reducing the size of your unproductive grass lawn. Stop using pesticides, herbicides and other poisons, which kill all life, not just pests.

Help preserve habitat. Eating less meat is the best way to keep forests and open spaces from being destroyed. Livestock, especially cattle, take up a lot of space. Rainforests are being burned to make way for food for cattle.

Drink only fair trade, organic coffee and tea for the same reasons, and avoid palm oil, which is responsible for the destruction of rainforests and the annihilation of many species, including orangutans.

Given a choice of a new house and an existing house, buy an existing house. Start a business in a vacant building. We need to protect open spaces and create wildlife corridors.

If you have a large tract of land, consider placing it in a conservation easement.

Use less plastic. Plastic, from microscopic pieces to large chunks, has now been found in virtually every waterway on the planet. Whales, other marine life and birds are starving from the amount of plastic they are ingesting, or dying from getting tangled in discarded fishing lines and nets.

Dont release balloons into the air. They often end up in the seas, where turtles mistake them for food.

Dont litter. All litter is problematic, as noted above, and not just because its unsightly. Litter along the roadways attracts animals to the sugar in soda bottles or the carbs in pizza crusts. Likewise, rodents are attracted to the roadside, which in turn attract owls and hawks. All are at risk of being struck by vehicles.

Driving slower, especially at night, can reduce roadkill. And if you see one deer, expect more close behind.

Keep cats indoors. Habitat destruction and cats are the biggest killers of birds, which have declined nearly 30% since 1970.

Turn off lights and noise. Light and noise pollution disrupt natural patterns for animals and people, too.

Vote for wildlife and a sustainable future. This is a big election year. We currently have a president who denies climate change and has rolled back 58 environmental regulations, including those that protect clean air and water, as well as endangered species and migratory birds. Another 37 rollbacks are pending.

Voting for candidates at all levels of government who care about a sustainable world is the most important thing you can do this year.

Weatherproof your home for the winter – News from southeastern Connecticut – theday.com - December 10, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

It's time to prepare your home against winter's harsh weather. Take a tip from the Eastern Connecticut Association of REALTORS - a few simple, precautionary steps can save money and add to the value of your home. Keep in mind the benefits of making the improvements and the risks involved in leaving some jobs unfinished.

    Heating systems

Heating systems vary, but in general, industry standards advise a professional check-up every year for oil-powered units and every three years for those powered by gas. However, do-it-yourself maintenance is also advisable. With the furnace off, you should replace air filters, and vacuum dust from the blower, fan blades grills and air intakes. Replace any cracked or frayed belts.

If your furnace supplies heat using hot water in pipes or radiators, you may need to lubricate the motor that pushes water through the system. Remember: the efficiency of hot-water systems can be impaired if air gets caught within the systems, because air takes the place of hot water. Make sure the valve that lets air escape is working properly.

    Chimney flues

Checking your chimney is another important weatherproofing task. If you are uncertain about the condition of a furnace or chimney flue, it's best to hire a chimney sweep to clear out creosote: the flammable oily residue that accumulates when wood is burned. If left uncleaned, creosote could be re-ignited, causing a chimney fire.

If you decide to clean out the furnace flue yourself, take apart exposed pipe sections and brush them outdoors. To clean a chimney flue, pull a sand-filled canvas bag back and forth through the opening, working from the roof. Make certain the flue is closed to keep soot from filtering inside the house.

    Smoke detectors

Although battery-powered smoke detectors should be tested year round, it is crucial to test them in the winter, because sources of fire, such as fireplaces, wood stoves and portable heaters are used. Testing battery-powered units is simple make sure the batteries work. A unit connected to the electrical system should also be tested, but probably does not need any maintenance except, perhaps, a light dusting.

    Air or water leaks

Look for air cracks around windows, doors, pipes, ducts and other openings. It is important to seal these leaks with flexible caulk. Seams where siding meets windows and doors should also be caulked. On brick siding, fill in eroded joints with mortar, to keep out air, water and snow.

    Insulation

Check the attic to see if insulation needs to be added or replaced. This is the most significant area of heat loss in many homes, so it is also important to see that it has proper ventilation. Inadequate ventilation could lead to premature deterioration of the insulation materials. It may be necessary to check insulation in exterior walls, crawl spaces and along foundation walls, as well.

    Gutter cleaning

Clean the leaves from all gutters. Then, make sure the drainage system works by running water through them.

    Avoiding frozen pipes

Finally, here's 5 tips for avoiding frozen pipes this winter!

Turnon your faucetsif the temperatures have dropped into freezing and intend to stay there. Keep water moving at 5 drips per minute through your system to slow down the freezing process.

Open cabinet doors covering plumbing in the kitchen and bathroom for better circulation, and to help prevent the exposed piping from freezing. This can keep water moving and limit the dangerous effects of freezing weather.

If your pipes are already freezing, wrap them with warm towels and then pour boiling water on top, or use already-wet towels (use gloves for this) to help loosen the ice inside and get your system running again.

Pull out your hair dryer when your pipes are freezing and try blowing hot air directly on the pipes. Do NOT use a blow torch or anything that produces direct flames, which can damage your pipes and turn a frozen pipe into an even worse disaster.

Shut off the water if pipes are frozen, and close off any external water sources like garden hose hookups. This will prevent more water from filling the system, which will add more ice to the pile and eventually burst your pipes the worst-case scenario. This also will help when the water thaws; the last thing you want after finally fixing your frozen pipes is for water to flood the systemand thus, your home.

Preparing your home for winter is a smart way to cut energy costs and make sure your home is safe. It's a job that is well worth the time and effort.

How to clean grime off your car this winter – AOL UK - December 10, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Though its not as pleasant, ensuring that your car stays clean in the chills of winter can be more essential than keeping it pristine during the height of summer.

As a result of gritters being on the road as well as general muck and dirt finding its way onto our highways, winter can be a tough time for cars. If you want to keep your cars bodywork in a good condition, its paramount that you give it a bit of regular maintenance. Heres how.

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Giving your car a thorough rinse before anything else gets rid of surface grime and loose materials, as well as washing any salt from rust-prone areas like the wheelarches and sills.

Dont be shy with the pressure washer, either; concentrate on areas like the grille, front splitter and under-boot section. Youd be surprised where salt and grit manages to get to.

Applying a pre-wash can make the whole process easier. A product like snow foam or a designated cleaner can strip the grime and muck off a car and ensure that the most amount of grit and salt is taken away.

Allow it to sit for a good amount of time before rinsing off and carrying forward to the next step.

The next part of the process is to apply plenty of car shampoo. Dont ever attempt this with household dish soap itll do more bad than good, as it can strip a lot of the protective coating on a paint.

Leave it on for a little while, too. Allow it to work its way into all of the difficult areas, and dont be tempted to rinse it off too early. Then, get scrubbing with a soft microfibre mitt.

Give the whole car a thorough rinse once youre all done scrubbing. Concentrate on fiddly areas like the wheels and brakes, as well as in gutter sections and in the wing mirrors.

Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth to remove all of the excess water from the cars bodywork.

This not only takes off the last of the surface grime that the scrub may have missed, but it also means the car isnt covered in streaks as it dries.

A finishing touch, but a worthwhile one, spraying a wax or sealant is a great way of prolonging the shine youve worked so hard to create.

I always forget just how utterly grim the roads are in Yorkshire until you come back to a town and get people staring at how dirty your car is. Thankfully sorted now pic.twitter.com/nFVZXpVBiS

Chris Garver Interview: Tattooing from the Gutter to the Top – Scene 360 - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a summarized historical explanation, the Tattoo Renaissance, began in the late 1950s with tattooers like Lyle Tuttle, Don Nolan, Zeke Owens, Ed Hardy, and others pioneering the way.

Between the hippie movement of the late 60s and the feminist campaigns and rights movements, the tattoo industry saw itself in the midst of a rebirth of sorts; resulting in an increase of customer base, visibility through tattooed celebrities (like Janis Joplin) and pop culture. During the 2000s, tattooing had yet another peak with the appearance of television shows such as Inked (2005) and Miami Ink (2008, starring Chris Garver, Ami James and friends), which gave us a look into the lives of tattooists and their studiosand improving social stigma.

With more legendary artists contributing to 21st-century history, Chris Garver is among them and one we are highlighting here, today. He became a professional tattooer in the late 1980s and has worked in New York City since the 1990s. Below, you can read our interview with Garver taking us back to that period of time when tattooing was banned by the Health Department.

Yeah, working at Adorned exposed me to more tattooers that were really pushing it artistically, and more people like that were my age. Before that, I was working with older guys and biker shops So, when I got to Adorned, it was great for me. I think my growth was pretty big there.

Definitely. Yeah, everybody that I worked with were people I felt were way more advanced than I was, so I had to play some catch up. But it was great. The artists that were always thereMike Ledger and Scott Harrisonthey were awesome to work with. And wed constantly have great guest artists.

Adorned owner Lori Leven was focused on the business side, which facilitated that you and colleagues concentrated on the creative side.

Yeah, she was really good at that. I think thats one of the greatest things she did, making tattooing really comfortable for the artist. She catered to the artist and she knew how to do business too. Normally, the guys I worked with [pauses] was like a working on a pirate ship, and then all of a sudden it was civilized, almost.

Before she did Adorned, I dont think that any shops had helpers, like assistants, people that cleaned after you and bused your table. Before, it was like you did everything yourself.

Now the tattooers are all spoiled. We all have people do things for us.

I think one of the things that kept New York back a little bit was that it was illegal. I think that a lot of people probably are scared to tattoo in an environment where youre doing something criminal. So guys that were more artsy, maybe they didnt want to deal with getting arrested for tattooing, or tattooing unsavory people.

Probably! Yeah, I think doing something illegal stops many people from doing it. [Laughs] I almost preferred it, it was more dangerous.

    It kept timid people away.

No, I never got arrested. But once my boss Jonathan Shaw was like, You know what? Lets just do it openly. Put a tattoo sign in the window. And we were like, All right, lets see what happens. And then I remember one day a cop came in with his uniform on. I was like, Oh, here we go. I was like, Hey, how are you doing? Hes like, Yeah, I was wondering how much a Jesus head is? And I was like [Laughs]

    You were lucky!

Yeah, he didnt care. It would have been the health department that we probably had to watch out for.

I think it was 95 or 96, then tattoo shops just started popping up everywhere. (It was kind of awful!)

I did. I actually like Ed Hardy, Eddie Deutsch, Dan Higgs, and Freddy Corbin. But I think a lot of people do, and the chrome toaster thing and everything was sacred (with a crown of thorns around it). I never got into it that much. I did a few chrome-y [effect] looking things, but I didnt really get into the weirdo stuff.

It has a universal acceptance and the quality of the art has definitely elevated quite a lot. I think its still underground art in a way. Theres a lot of tattoo exhibits and museums. Theres tattoo artists that have exhibited in all sorts of high-art places.

Like Ed Hardys recent art show at the de Young museum.

Yeah. Ed Hardy, Dr Lakra We had a show here at the Somerset Housea pretty prestigious place. So, [basically] tattooing went from the gutter to the top.

The Rain Gutters Los Angeles | The Rain Gutters Inc - October 10, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Good rain gutters are an integral part of a home's exterior. Old, damaged or defective rain gutters can cause a lot of damage. When a gutter clogs, the water is not diverted properly and overflows into either the house or foundation. This can cause wood rot, foundation problems and landscaping erosion. In addition to damage to your home, a rain gutter clogged with soggy leaves and debris is the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, as well as mosquitoes and other pests.

People often think that rain gutters have to be on their homes but are never sure why. Rain rolling off of your roof especially a second story roof can really punish the ground below. If there are several rounds of steady rains, this rainwater can carve a small trench on the sides of you home. Rain gutters divert this water away and release it slowly in designated areas of your yard so that this water can be properly drained away. Without rain gutters, yards can flood, erode very quickly from the massive amounts of runoff, and other things if you didn't have gutters.Call Us 888-872-8879

What is the Average Price to Clean Gutters? (Gutter Cleaning … - October 6, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Roof gutters often become blocked with leaves, twigs and moss which can rot into a thick muddy sludge thatll block the flow of water.

Leaking or overflowing gutters can cause all sorts of damage to the property and experts recommend gutter cleaning be done once per year.

But how much does it cost to clean guttering and what type of tradesperson does this task?

On this page youll find our price guide for gutter cleaning, we can also help you get a competitive price for the cleaning of your own gutters.

We last updated the prices on this page on the 6th March 2018.

In 2016 and again in early 2018, we sent out price requests to gutter cleaners, installers and roofing firms.

We asked them how much it would cost to clean out the gutters to a typical semi-detached house with 15 metres of linear guttering.

The results surprised us becausewe saw a big difference in the prices.

Specialist gutter cleaning firms were by far the cheapest, with many quoting a price on a per metre basis.

Roofers and gutterers were much more expensive, with several firms quoting us a figure 3 times higher than our cheapest firm.

The takeaway tip is this: In addition to getting at least three quotes, we suggest you source your quotes from businesses that specialise in gutter cleaning.

Based on our research, not only are they cheaper on average, but many are smaller firms that trade below the VAT registration threshold.

That means you wont be charged a hefty 20% VAT on top of the price.

Below youll find the results of our research, the prices have been averaged and include the figures provided to us by roofers, guttering firms and specialist cleaners.

This price guide was last updated in 2018:

If your gutters are difficult to reach, perhaps theyre very high or located above a conservatory or extension, you should use the services of a business that uses a high-reach pole system.

Pole systems are attached to powerful hoovers that extract the blockage from inside the gutters.

Theres no need for ladders, access towers or cherry pickers that other firms may need to hire (at considerable cost) just to reach your gutters.

The prices on this page exclude the cost of cleaning the exterior of the gutters and any repairs that would cost extra.

Explore our gutter repair price guide for more information about gutter repairs and your options.

The worst case scenario is moss, twigs and leaves being flushed into the underground soakaway causing a blockage.

It can cost hundreds of pounds to dig out and replace a soakaway,

    There are other repercussions:

The most difficult aspect is gaining safe access to the gutters.

Extensions, conservatories, narrow alleyways and other obstacles can make access difficult, hence why consumers living in such homes should use the services of a firm with a high-reach pole system.

Once safe access has been gained, the work is fairly straightforward and simple.

The muck in the gutters can usually be removed manually with just a glove and a bucket.

The gutters are then given a wash through with water and a wipe through with a cloth.

Gutter cleaning is not a difficult task, once safe access has been gained.

While the work itself is very easy just scooping out the debris by hand and flushing with water, this project does involve working at height.

For reasons of health and safety, its best to use the services of a professional gutter cleaner.

Gutter guards are filters that prevent moss, twigs and other bits of debris from entering the gutters.

Installing a gutter guard can reduce the frequency of gutter maintenance and save you money in the long run.

You could also have the moss from the roof removed and a chemical treatment applied to the tiles to prevent its re-growth.

Also, consider cutting back any overhanging tree branches that shed leaves onto your roof.

How Much Does Gutter Cleaning Cost? | Angie’s List - September 14, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Experts say you can install gutter guards to keep leaves out. However, they warn that not every product works well.

There are no gutter screens that keep gutters 100 percent clean, Lincoln says. There are really good screens that keep the debris out.

The screens still require maintenance. Lincoln says homeowners need to sweep the top of them every few years.

Gutter screens are typically worth it, but nothing is maintenance-free," he says.

Lincoln says gutter screens can last the entire lifespan of your gutter system.

Hiring a company to install gutter screens can cost $6 to $8 per square foot. Lincoln says most homes average about 200 square feet of gutters.
