White-Rodgers of St. Louis, Mo., a division of Emerson Climate Technologies, is recalling about 740,000 Home Heating and Cooling Thermostats in the United States and 403,000 in Canada. The alkaline batteries used in the thermostat can leak onto the circuit board posing a fire hazard.
This recall involves four models of White-Rodgers digital thermostats. The thermostats are white with blue lighted screens and have one of the following names printed on the front of them: "COMFORTSENTRY," "DICO," "Emerson," "Frigidaire," "Maytag," "Nutone," "Partners Choice," "Rheem," "Ruud," "Unico," "Water Furnace," "Westinghouse," "White-Rodgers" or "Zonefirst." The thermostats have a battery door on the top left corner. There are three or four buttons to the right and also below the thermostat screen. Recalled thermostats do not show a battery icon on the left side of the blue lighted screen.
The firm has received seven reports of burn damage to the thermostat, including two involving minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.
Consumers should check thermostats for battery icon on the left side of the blue lighted screen, if the battery icon is not shown, contact White-Rodgers to receive a free repair or a replacement thermostat.
The thermostats were sold at Heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment manufacturers and distributors and at hardware retailers nationwide from January 2006 through December 2013 for about $30 to $70.
Contact White-Rodgers toll-free at (888) 624-1901 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or online at http://www.white-rodgers.com and click on "White-Rodgers 1F8x-04xx Thermostat Recall" at the lower left corner of the homepage for more information.

As a 2006 graduate of Forest Lake High School, Luke Odegaard knew the district's facilities needed to be upgraded.
But it wasn't until the lifelong Forest Lake resident joined a school facilities task force in 2012 and toured every school that he realized the extent of the need for repairs and routine maintenance.
"That motivated me to do something more," said Odegaard, who leads Vote Yes for Kids, which is supporting Forest Lake Area Schools' $176 million capital levy request. "These are old buildings, and they need to be renovated and brought into the 21st century."
District residents vote on the request Tuesday.
If approved, the levy money will be used to fix aging roofs, update heating and cooling systems, and increase security at school buildings, and for other projects.
It also would allow for creating a campus for middle- and high-schoolers by moving ninth-graders into the high school and putting all seventh- and eighth-graders into one junior high school. School leaders say that setup would be more efficient and give secondary students more academic options.
Superintendent Linda Madsen acknowledges the amount of the tax request is "considerable" but adds that the amount was determined after input from parents, students and district staff who made up the facilities task force. District voters last approved a capital levy in 1999; they rejected a smaller tax request in 2010.
If approved, the levy would cost the owner of a $200,000 home about $200 a year, but that amount would rise because the district plans to borrow money for projects in stages. In a decade, the levy would cost $332 a year for the owner of a $200,000 home, said Larry Martini, the district's director of business services.
District leaders have spent the months leading up to the vote meeting with community members and compiling information about the proposed projects to post on the district website. Odegaard and Madsen say the community response has been generally positive.
"I think people cannot deny there are some things in the district that need attention," Madsen said.

A segment of Emerson Electric Co . ( EMR ), Climate technologies, has launched a revolutionary monitoring service called ComfortGuard for the management of heating and cooling equipment. Being the first of its kind, the product is expected to solve one of the most common problems of American households. The monitoring packages will be available for $9.99 a month. The company has already launched the service in St. Louis.
According to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Energy, it has been observed that more than half of the domestic heating and cooling equipment is in need of repair which is also quite an expensive affair.
Therefore, with the launch of ComfortGuard, Emerson intends to resolve such household issues by providing the homeowners with the required insight and guidance needed to take charge of their heating and cooling equipment. The system will also monitor equipment performance and provide early caution so that minor problems can be dealt with at home. The owners will also be able to consult Emerson experts for recommendations and knowledge on maintenance and repair.
ComfortGuard has 10 built-in high-tech sensors that will collect and convey data over a Wi-Fi connection every time heating and cooling systems are operated. Therefore, with every usage, a 32-point inspection is conducted which includes a scan for efficiency changes, filter degradation and component problems.
To add to the advantages, the homeowners are continuously notified about efficiency and filter status, monthly System Insight Reports and repair verifications through email alerts. This apart, the owners also have access to a fully responsive web and mobile portal, making system status, live data, equipment details, and filter size easily available.
Emerson's Climate technologies reported a 5.4% year-over-year increase in revenues in the second quarter of fiscal 2014. The improvement was driven by strength in global refrigeration markets and transportation. Underlying sales grew about 6%, as currency translation impacted the top line by less than 1%, with the U.S. witnessing sales growth of 2%, Asia 11% and Europe 3%.The U.S. air conditioning business is improving gradually, with mid-single-digit growth in residential markets and low-single-digit growth in the commercial business. Strong demand in China drove the upside in Asia, led by strong refrigeration, solutions and temperature sensors businesses. Also, market conditions continue to improve in Europe.
Emerson currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). However, some better-ranked stocks in the sector worth considering at the moment include Pernix Group Inc . ( PRXG ), Willdan Group Inc. ( WLDN ) and Enersys Inc . ( ENS ). Pernix and Willdan sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) while Enersys has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

For the second time in as many years, Climate Partners is the recipient of the ENERGY STAR Century Club Award. The Milford-based home heating and cooling specialists were awarded this honor by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The award is presented to contractors using a whole-house approach to improve energy efficiency in over 100 houses within a given year, while also successfully fulfilling the requirements of local Home Performance With ENERGY STAR programs.
We are excited to share this award with our customers and community, says Climate Partners owner Tom Casey, "To let them know we're not only committed to offering them an opportunity to make their homes more efficient and healthy, which in the end will result in cost savings for them, but that we're also dedicated to promoting energy efficiency, to make our community a healthier place to live, reducing our carbon footprint one home at a time.
Climate Partners whole-house approach involves an energy audit, where the company evaluates the energy efficiency of a home and identifies areas where the system may be wasting energy. They then present the client with options for optimizing the entire system, rather than just replacing a single component.
While the process is more involved than a standard inspection, Casey and his team see it as crucial, not only for major improvements to home heating solutions and home cooling solutions, but for noticeable reduction in consumer energy costs as well. And since the process is more involved, Casey and his team make sure that customer service is still at the top of their list.
"The two gentlemen who came to our house were very professional and hardworking," said Michella Laslett, a Climate Partners customer in Milford. "I was very impressed with their work."
The award selection committee seems impressed with Climate Partners' work as well.
It's validation for our team that all their hard work and dedication really make a difference, says Casey. Climate Partners has a long legacy of being the market leader for comfort and energy, and this award is proof positive that doing good things for our clients is good for business.
Climate Partners, located at 922 Bridgeport Avenue in Milford, Connecticut, has been offering HVAC service, repair, and installation solutions to customers in the Fairfield and New Haven counties area for 75 years. For more information or inquiries, visit climatepartners.com or call 203-877-7771.

On June 3, local residents will head to the polls to decide whether to approve a $99 million bond measure that would raise money for facilities improvements at Los Gatos and Saratoga high schools.
If the measure is approved, the district estimates the average annual cost to property owners would be $18 per $100,000 of their property's value. That's on top of the approximately $35 per $100,000 property owners are already paying annually for a $79 million bond that was approved by more than 80 percent of voters in June 1998. Those payments will continue through 2024.
That measure initiated repairs and improvements to Los Gatos and Saratoga high schools, but nearly two decades later, district officials say many of the classrooms and school facilities that were not in need of repair in 1998 have aged and now need repairs and upgrades.
A list of improvements includes repairing leaky and aging roofs, replacing or fixing old heating and cooling systems, making safety repairs to classrooms, labs and other school facilities, upgrading classrooms and educational technology, and adding a classroom at Los Gatos High to accommodate a projected enrollment increase of 200 students by 2018-2019, according to district superintendent Bob Mistele.
Funds from the Measure E bond would also be used to modernize science labs at both high schools.
Specifically, the measure would retrofit an engineering classroom at Saratoga High to a science lab and allocate $2 million to each school for technology upgrades, such as the schools' wireless infrastructure network.
"We have excellent high schools, high-performing schools, and we're trying to maintain that strong foundation in science, math and English, and we believe that our students deserve 21st century facilities," Mistele said.
Additionally, some money would be used at both high schools to build new classrooms for the music departments.
"We've got expanding programs, and we need to accommodate the growth of those programs," Mistele said.
The district will also allocate money for expanding theater facilities on both campuses. At Los Gatos High, the funds will be used to build a room for prop storage.

First an icy winter and now record high temperatures for May.
More and more people are investing in a good home cooling system.
And experts say it's not just about comfort.
It's a safety issue.
The extreme weather can be dangerous for people with COPD or asthma.
The elderly are more at risk for heat stroke when temperatures are this high.
Experts say the best way to prepare for summer is to act now.
"I'd urge you to flip your AC on if you haven't already - make sure it's working correctly and if not, get that taken care of before the next hot spell occurs," says Justin Layfield, with Grogg's Heating and Air Conditioning.
The pros at Grogg's say any air circulation is better than nothing.
Even a fan can reduce the risk of any heat-related health problems.

MURPHYSBORO The Jackson County Board is taking step to repair problems with the courthouse.
The finance committee approved a plan to complete all needed repairs on the courthouse rather than just making temporary solutions, said Jackson County Board Chairman John Rendleman.
The plan, which will be recommended to the county board May 20, is meant to fix major leaking and water damage in the courthouse basement. Also, the repairs will take care of all heating and cooling needs on the first and second floor as well as the basement.
This will stabilize all mechanical matter needs in the courthouse for the foreseeable future, Rendleman said.
He said fixing the leaking in the basement will allow the courthouse to have offices in the basement again, which will free up much needed space for other offices.
The total cost for the courthouse repair project will be about $764,000.
Rendleman said the finance committee authorized the expenditure of $200,000 from previously appropriated funds for capital improvements to help offset some of the cost.
He said the county will also seek a loan not to exceed $600,000 for the balance. The loan will be paid back by funds through the regular general revenue account and must be paid back within two years after taking out the loan.
