FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Stalled furnaces and frozen pipes are a common problem thanks to the sub-zero temperatures outside. Since Thursday, one heating and plumbing company in the area has had about 350 calls for service.
Friday morning, Fort Wayne homeowner Bob Blanton woke up with an unexpected surprise from Mother Nature.
Woke up this morning and guess what, the coldest day of the year and the furnace doesn't work, Blanton said.
It's a problem Dave Korte's heating and cooling business sees a lot this time of year.
The most common call when it gets sub-zero like this would be frozen pipes, said Korte, vice president of Korte Does It All Inc. Secondary would be no heat.
But Korte said there are ways to prepare when the mercury gets this low. When it's below zero, he said leave water dripping in the faucets so pipes dont freeze.
For the furnace:
As for the verdict on Blanton's furnace, repair crews discovered problems with the pressure switch caused it to stop working. They got the furnace on again and he should have a warm night.
Dick Fox, owner of Fox & Fox vehicle repair, said he's seen a lot of cars over the past couple days that won't start because of the cold weather. For vehicles parked outside in the frigid temperatures overnight, Fox said:

WYOMING, Mich. Its been a rough Michigan winter already and it is far from over. Dangerously cold air is on its way early next week, with single digit temperatures and wind chills possibly falling as low as -25 degrees.
Its something we havent seen since February 2007.
Local auto repair shops say they have been keeping busy this year. Eric Carlson, owner of Ervines Auto Repair in Wyoming, says they have sold a lot more tires and batteries this winter than last.
Carlson says while cars that regularly get checked should handle this next dose of Mother Nature just fine its the ones already having trouble that could suffer.
Duane Ott, manager at the Belle Tire on Clyde Park in Wyoming says going through a checklist, making sure your battery is good and your heating and cooling system is working correctly can make all the difference.
People take it for granted that theyre going to walk out into their vehicle and its going to start-up every day, but if youre not doing your maintenance items on the vehicle, obviously when these types of things hit youll end up having your problems, he said.

GUSD to explore bond feasibility -
January 1, 2014 by

GUSTINE The Gustine Unified School District will explore the feasibility of a bond measure to raise funds to bring aging facilities and infrastructure up to par.
School board members, after meeting with a consultant in a special meeting Thursday evening, unanimously approved the exploratory effort which could be a pre-cursor to placing a bond measure before voters as early as June of next year.
Superintendent Ron Estes said in previous board meetings that the district simply does not have the financial resources to repair deteriorating infrastructure without passing a school bond or similar measure.
Thursday, consultant Jon Isom, managing principal of Isom Advisors, outlined the general obligation bond option and laid out a process aimed at successfully promoting a bond measure in the district.
Isoms firm will conduct the feasibility study and, if the district proceeds, also provide a one-stop shop of services for the bond campaign. The consultant is only paid if a bond measure passed, he emphasized.
The district is already working to compile a list of projects that could be included in a bond measure, which Isom said was one of the first steps in the feasibility study which will include a telephone survey and community outreach.
You need to have a construction manager or architect come on board to say these are the needs, and this is what it costs. It all starts there, the consultant emphasized.
While campuses in the Gustine Unified School District are well-maintained and attractive, Isom said, a closer look would reveal deteriorating infrastructure, antiquated science labs, outdated plumbing and electrical systems, inefficient heating and cooling systems and a host of other shortcomings that need to be addressed.
While still functional, Isom explained, at some point there is an acknowledgment that you need to bring things up to the 21st Century. Twenty-first Century students need 21st Century classrooms.
The only alternative to operating the outdated campuses using Band-aids to get by, Isom added, is to fund improvement projects which bring schools up to modern standards.
