PHOENIX -- Home security experts are reminding Valley residents to take extra steps to protect homes when they leave for summer vacation.

"Your home, unfortunately, is more vulnerable when you are not there," said Travis Moss of Safeguard, the Valley's largest security provider. "Residents need to be proactive. Before you leave, make sure the shrubbery around your house is trimmed back, have your mail picked up, neighbors put out your trash can."

Security systems might seem expensive, but Moss said they are worth the investment. According to the Arizona Alarm Association, "An alarm system is the first line of defense against home burglary. In a recent study conducted by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, researchers interviewed more than 400 convicted burglars and found that almost 60 percent of them indicated a home with an alarm system would cause them to seek an alternative target."

Another scary, but realistic possibility is that burglaries happen while residents are home.

"Families don't take time to discuss what can happen," said Moss. "There must be a plan in place and arm every family member with knowledge."

The U.S. Department of Justice estimated that 3.7 million household burglaries occurred each year between 2003 and 2007. In approximately one million of them, there was a household member at home, with an average of 266,650 becoming victims of violent burglaries in their homes.

To help homeowners stay safe during a burglary, the Arizona Alarm Association offered these tips.

Should you suspect someone has entered your home, it's important to act quickly. First and foremost, do not attempt to apprehend the burglar yourself. If you're near your home security system, press the emergency alarm to notify your alarm monitoring company that you require immediate assistance. If you are not close to the alarm panel or your home isn't equipped with a monitored system, everyone in the home should immediately, and quietly, move to a prearranged safe place.

A neighbor's home is an ideal safe place - but only if you are able to exit inconspicuously. If you're on an upper level or cannot leave without encountering the burglar, grab your cell phone and quietly get your family into a hiding spot such as a closet or crawl space. Once your family is in place, call 911 and keep the operator on the line. Stay quiet in the safe space until police arrive or until you are certain the assailant has left your home.

Neoji says its algorithms learn and adapt to the normal rhythms and sounds of your home so they arent triggered by standard stuff like the dog being, well, the dog. But thats a pretty ambitious claim, so it remains to be seen how smart and adaptive their algorithms really are.

The more you work with Neoji, the smarter it becomes, and the more customized it will be to your home, is what they say. So youre clearing going to have to babyNeoji through a learning curve of false alarms. And probably be willing to trade some false alarms for a greater sense of security that you are at least being alerted to goings on at home when youre out and about.

As well as security-focused stuff, Neojialso includes sensors so it can measure and track indoor air quality and temperature so it could send an alert about an unusual temperature spike, for instance. And sensefor the presence of mold by tracking humidity levels.

It is also being designed as an open hub device so it can hook intoother smart in-home devices, such as smart thermostats, smart meters and wireless lightbulbs, so you can control other smart gizmos and do things like remotely control your home lighting so it looks like youre at home, andtrack your energy consumption via Neoji. Current supported wireless standards include Apples iBeacon, Zigbee, 6LoWPAN, Enocean, KNX and M-Bus.

A premium version of the device also includes a camera with a fixed 180 degree view so you can remotely log in to do a visual check after being alerted that something unusual is happening at home with that version of Neoji. So its offering Dropcam-style functionality at that point.

In terms of range, one Neoji device is apparently able to monitor one to two rooms (presumably the sound sensing might span more than one room, but the camera obviously wont be able to see through walls). So, if you want your whole multi-room mansion to be entirely covered its going to get expensive. The consumer Neoji device starts at $299 for the entry-level model (without a camera) rising to $399 for all the bells and whistles.There is alsoa $499 developer version with an SDK.

Neoji was founded in May 2013 byserial entrepreneurFranois Bordes who founded energy consumption tracking platform, MyCO2; hardware engineer Cyrille Dayanga who has done prior work on smart home technologies; and software engineer Sbastien de Salvador, who has previously worked on cloud platforms and energy monitoring systems.

Neoji Is A Sensor-Packed Home Security, Safety And Efficiency Monitoring Hub

(KUTV) Home security giant ADT has accused Orem, Utah based Vision Security of training its salespeople to lie in order to make sales.

ADT sent KUTV a two minute video that they claim was shot in Arizona back in March of 2013 using a cell phone. The video shows an instructor wielding a clipboard talking to a class. A piece of paper on the clipboard reads, "Vision."

The instructor, which ADT claims was a regional sales manager for Vision Security, tells his students what to say when they see a security sign in someone's front yard that reads, "ADT."

The instructor demonstrates telling a homeowner that he is there to upgrade that homeowner's current home alarm.

"We're with G.E. We are the makers of all the equipment that you guys have in the home," the instructor acted out in a demonstration. "We do business with all the security companies. ADT is one of them."

ADT lawyer Dave Bleisch says they do not do business with Vision Security.

"It's very clear that they're being told how to tell lies to consumers," Bleisch said.

The video reinforces complaints filed by homeowners from across the country. The state of Ohio sued Vision Security last fall claiming Vision salespeople lied to Ohio residents about the identity of the company, the price of the system, or that Vision Security was there to upgrade the consumer's current home security system.

Vision Security settled those charges earlier this year.

In Utah, the division of consumer protection has cited vision security. The citation refers to numerous complaints that Vision Security salespeople made untrue statements. The complaints came from around the country including Missouri, Illinois, Maryland and Virginia.
