Kaspersky Labs flagship security solution for home users, Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, was recognized as the best of the products compared in the Whole Product Dynamic Real-World Protection Test conducted by AV-Comparatives, an independent research lab, from August to November 2013. The labs experts analyzed how effectively popular security products protect against real-world threats faced by home users.
The testing procedure allowed security solutions to use any techniques to prevent the test computers infection with malware from blocking malicious links clicked by the user to detecting and removing malware already present on the device. However, security solutions had to operate with minimal input from PC users. This is because users are sometimes not sure what to do with suspicious programs detected by security solutions and might make poor decisions.
AV-Comparatives experts tested a total of 22 security solutions from different vendors. Each product was subjected to 1,821 test cases. Kaspersky Internet Security successfully blocked 1,820 threats, demonstrating 99.9% effectiveness over the four-month testing series the best result among all products tested. The Kaspersky Lab product prevented the systems from being infected in all cases, only prompting the user to make a decision in one instance.
Several hundred legitimate sites and apps were also used during testing to check whether the products generated false positives. If the security solutions blocked one of these sites or files from opening, they received a penalty. Kaspersky Internet Security was one of just five products that did not generate a single false positive.
The outstanding results produced by Kaspersky Internet Security earned the product an Advanced+ rating from AV-Comparatives.
For ordinary users its not that important at exactly which stage a security solution manages to block malware the main thing is that it prevents their computers from being infected. Because the testing by AV-Comparatives assesses a products combined capabilities, the results present home users with a much more practical evaluation than other tests that only assess individual security components, commented Oleg Ishanov, Director Anti-Malware Research, Kaspersky Lab.
Testing was carried out on a 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 with all the updates that were available as of August 2013. The latest versions of popular applications such as Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple QuickTime, Mozilla Firefox, and Oracle Java were also installed on the test computers.

There is not just one type of burglar. While homeowners can protect their property against one type, another kind may literally come knocking at their door. Home Security NW recently released an article introducing the public to five different burglars. They include the Knock on Your Front Door Burglar, the Vacation Burglar, the Glove Box Burglar, the Lazy Burglar, and the Garage Rummaging Burglar. To view the full article, click here.
Each one of these thieves uses their own unique set of tactics. The article, therefore, recommends that homeowners take the initiative to defend their property against a variety of burglars. Homeowners are urged not to just lock the front door, but to also put a lock on their back gate, their garage door, and their glove box. Instead of turning off all of the lights when leaving for a vacation, homeowners are encouraged to leave at least one light on. Also, newspapers can be collected by a friendly neighbor.
No homeowner should assume they are always safe. It is not worth waking up in the morning to a broken car window and an empty glove box. It would be a sad ending to a lovely time away for a homeowner to return from vacation to find they had been robbed by the Vacation Burglar. Since the Lazy Burglar makes a habit of snatching bikes and tools from driveways, homeowners should make a habit of always putting their belongings behind closed and locked doors. Home Security NW suggests that homeowners should not just think about the guy who can pick the lock on the front door. He has friends, and they are out to loot the neighborhood as well, each in his own way.

A Whanganui family's home was ravaged by a fire today in what appears to be a botched burglary.
Police say the incident a sad reminder of the importance of home security.
Just months after moving in, and two days before Christmas, the home was gutted as the family went to the beach. Christmas presents were found dumped in a rubbish bag on the lawn, pointing to a botched burglary.
Detective Sergeant Philip Taylor of the Whanganui police says the property at the address was scattered.
"On arrival it's become clear that this fire is suspicious in its nature and that there's been a bit of a break-in at the address."
3 News understands the British family left home just after 8am, and within minutes it was up in smoke.
Senior Station Officer Bryce Coneybeer says by the time the crew arrived, the fire in the old villa was "well-established".
"Fortunately [presents] weren't all burnt, they were one of the few things in the house that weren't damaged."
The family hadn't lived there long and it's the second time they've been victims of a fire - their previous home caught fire through an electrical fault.
Authorities say at this time of year, whether or not if it was the case here, home security is crucial.

For Raffi Kajberouni, the keys to his Santa Clarita home have become relics.
If he locks himself out, no problem. If a friend arrives at his two-story house before him, there's no waiting outside for Kajberouni to arrive. Kajberouni taps his smartphone and his front door unlocks.
He can also turn down the thermostat or view his home security cameras from anywhere in the world.
"A lot of my friends are jealous," the 31-year-old said. "It's like the home from 'Back to the Future,' but in real life."
From complete home systems to individual Internet-connected products such as high-tech appliances and power strips, the smart home is no longer a futuristic gimmick.
The technology behind smart gadgets items that can be controlled remotely or perform tasks on their own has been around for decades, but until recently the devices were rudimentary and, above all, expensive.
"It had always been an upscale-type business: Unless you were in the top 5% of income levels, you didn't have access to this type of connectivity," said Randy Light, merchant of home automation for Home Depot.
Wireless Internet and the widespread proliferation of smartphones are making smart home technologies more sophisticated and affordable.
"This used to be something out of 'The Jetsons' or limited to the super-rich," said Jonathan Dorsheimer, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity. But as smart home technology has improved and costs have come down, "it's becoming more mainstream."
Analysts estimate that only a small single-digit percentage of homeowners have smart homes.

FrontPoint Security, the nationwide leader in wireless home security, releases its opinion on the self-monitored security system, the latest introduction in the home security industry.
The majority of home security companies use professional monitoring stations to keep an eye on customers alarm systems. The monitoring stations respond to alerts and notify the authorities during emergencies. Newer companies featuring self-monitored burglar alarms forego the professional monitoring station, instead giving the same responsibilities to the customers.
With self-monitored systems on the rise, its important to remind customers how important professional monitoring is to the home security package, said CEO and Co-Founder Chris Villar. There are many situations where you might not be able to respond to an emergency, whereas a monitoring station is always ready.
The main argument for a self-monitored alarm system is that because there is no monitoring station, theres also no monthly monitoring fee. However, the money saved is not worth the gamble. A home security system is meant to protect a home and family as well as provide peace of mind. The level of security on these is drastically reduced when removing professional monitoring.
Most home security users realize that theyre not able to monitor their own home 24/7, added Vice President of Operations Philip Pearson. There are many common activities that can get in the way of reading an important alert from your self-monitored security system like driving, sleeping or traveling. You need professional monitoring to ensure that there is an immediate response should the worst happen.
Home security experts and other home alarm companies are in agreement when it comes to self-monitored security systems: theyre a good introduction into home security systems, but the lack of professional monitoring leaves it as a secondary option at best.
