Planning a home improvement project? How to hire a quality contractor - December 21, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

(BPT) - Dreaming of home improvement projects in the New Year? Youre not alone many homeowners are deciding what improvement project to tackle next. As the housing market continues to strengthen, homeowners buying or selling homes are focused on curb appeal or updating new spaces, which makes now a perfect time for remodeling. In fact, a majority of U.S. Homeowners (75.5 percent) are planning one or more home improvement projects by early 2014, according to a recent HIRI Sentiment Tracking Study.

Home improvement projects were on the rise in 2013 and I believe the numbers will continue to increase in 2014, says Dennis Stemmle, president of ServiceLive, a free online home improvement service that connects people to quality contractors. Hiring an experienced contractor helps homeowners get the job done right the first time, giving them peace of mind and avoiding additional costs associated with mistakes.

Stemmle says hiring a contractor can be nerve-wracking for homeowners, who have heard too many horror stories of contractors abandoning half-completed projects, doing inferior work, or grossly misjudging costs. To avoid contractor trouble and to find a reputable contractor who will save you time and money, Stemmle suggests you ask these six questions before you make a hiring decision:

    1. What is your business history?

A contractor needs to have the proper licenses and permits, so be sure to verify the person entering your home is legally able to complete the project. Also ask how long the company has been in business and where it is located. If a company is inexperienced or located far away, you might find the service inadequate. To save time and make it more convenient for consumers, ServiceLive offers a six-point background check on each of its contractors so customers can feel confident about who they hire.

    2. How much is this going to cost?

Get an itemized budget containing all costs associated with the project up front. You might eliminate the highest bid to save money, but dont necessarily go with the lowest one. If the estimate is too low, you may find the project was completed with shoddy workmanship or cheap materials.

    3. Do you have references?

Always ask for references. Make phone calls and visit past projects that are similar to the one you are planning. This is a great way to learn if there have been any past issues with the contractor.

    4. Who will be working at my house?

New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home - December 18, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

(StatePoint) Running a home can be a full-time job. Unfortunately, many of us dont have that kind of time. This new year, resolve to check off all the items on your to-do list without working harder. You can accomplish this by finding smarter solutions to maintain your home efficiently.

    Pest Control

When it comes to pest control, a false sense of security during the cooler months can get you in trouble, as all homes are susceptible to pest invasion year-round.

The experts at Terminix say the best way to prevent rodents from entering your home is by sealing holes and cracks outside your home. Install a good, thick weatherstrip on the bottom of all doors. Be sure the door from the garage is sealed extra tight.

If youre using firewood indoors, never bring more inside than you need at one time. Firewood can harbor insects like beetles, spiders, ladybugs, ants, cockroaches and centipedes.

Its important to have a professional periodically inspect for signs of pests and take preventative control measures.

    System Maintenance

Creating monthly and annual maintenance schedules for your homes major systems and appliances can save you time and money later, according to the experts at American Home Shield.

Start by adding these tasks to your monthly calendar: clean the dishwasher drains to prevent clogs and breakdowns, flush the garbage disposal with water and baking soda to prevent odor and grime, and change the filters for your air conditioner and heating system to improve air quality.

Annual maintenance should include checking your washers hoses for leaks, cleaning the lint from your dryer ductwork, caulking leaks around windows and doors, and having your heating and cooling systems professionally serviced.

Study: Home Maintenance Costs Are Underestimated By More Than 27% - December 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (PRWEB) December 16, 2013

Potential homeowners have a lot to think about when considering buying a home. One thing that they must account for is the high price of maintaining it no longer will the condo or apartment owner pay for repairs of a broken appliance or other damage to the residence.

To determine if potential homebuyers were accurately projecting the cost, Choice Home Warranty ran a survey asking a prime first-time home buying audience, young adults aged 25-34, how much they would expect to pay in home maintenance costs per year for an average-aged $300,000 home.

Respondents said they would expect to spend $2191 on average, a number well under the one percent average cost of $3000 several experts tell homeowners to expect as a minimum. Women were slightly more accurate than men at projecting the average actual costs, expecting an average of $2290 in maintenance, with men only projecting $2086 in costs per year.

These numbers show that many potential homeowners may be doing a poor job of forecasting the real costs of homeownership, a reality that may create financial hardship for them in the future.

The full study can be seen here: http://www.choicehomewarranty.com/blog/home-maintenance-study/.

Methodology The Choice Home Warranty survey asked respondents aged 25-34, On an average-aged $300,000 home that you own, how much would you expect to pay in home maintenance costs per year? using the Google Consumer Surveys tool. The survey ran December 3rd to December 6th, 2013. Results are weighted by inferred gender, age and geography to reflect the population.
