Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has introduced chip-on-board (COB) LED package products, the LC006B and LC008B, with six and eight watts of power respectively.

The new packages join five others in Samsungs LC series (LC013B, LC019B, LC026B, LC033B and LC040B), to complete the company's COB package line-up.

A chip-on-board LED package provides a single light source that combines multiple LED chips to achieve higher light intensity and uniformity, while simplifying luminaire design.

The LC006B and LC008B offer high-efficacy levels of 140 lm/W and 142 lm/W at 5000K CCT, respectively. The new packages will support a wide range of CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) specifications from 2700K to 5000K with a CRI (Color Rendering Index) over 80. The devices also feature a compact package size with an 8 mm LES (Light Emitting Surface) and a package structure that can be easily connected with holders or screw mounts for greater installation convenience.

Samsung COB LED lighting solutions now can be used in a wider range of applications, including downlight for home lighting, flood light for industrial lighting, and spotlight and downlight for commercial lighting.

GENEVA

The World Health Organization warns that millions of people every year, mainly in developing countries, are dying from indoor air pollution caused by the use of dangerous fuels and cookstoves in the home. So the organization is issuing new guidelines aimed at reducing health-damaging household pollutants.

The World Health Organization reports nearly 3 billion people have no access to clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting. It says more than 7 million people die from exposure to indoor or outdoor air pollution each year. Of that number, WHO reports some 4.3 million people, mainly in developing countries, die from household air pollution emitted by rudimentary biomass and coal cookstoves.

WHO's new guidelines on reducing these indoor pollutants are based on new findings that the use of toxic fuels in inefficient stoves, space heaters, or lamps are to blame for many of those premature deaths.

Harmful fuel

Carlos Dora, coordinator in WHO's Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health, said people should not use unprocessed coal and kerosine indoors. He said opening a window or door to let out the toxic emissions will not remedy the situation. It only will serve to pollute the outdoors.

You cannot expect that a bit of ventilation is going to get rid of this. It is really about very clean technologies and clean fuels. And the fuel story has not been stressed enough so far in the global debate," said Dora. "So, that is the new thing. We should be going for clean fuels. We should be avoiding coal. We should be avoiding kerosene and we should be going for the solar, the LPG [liquified petroleum gas], the ethanol-the solutions that we know exist that can address a big proportion of this issue.

WHO says indoor pollution leads to premature death from stroke, ischaemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, childhood pneumonia and lung cancer. Women and girls are the main victims.

WHO says these diseases primarily are caused by high levels of fine particulate matter and carbon monoxide released by the burning of solid fuels. These include wood, coal, animal dung, crop waste and charcoal.

The lighting was designed and made in Michigan by Shelby-based Zon LED, and supplied by Ann Arbors McNaughton-McKay. The newly installed Re-Verber-Ray infra-red heaters are manufactured by Detroit Radiant Products and supplied by Johnstone Supply in Ann Arbor. Willis Building Company, Inc. in Saline completed the installation of the roof, insulation and also provided a fresh coat of paint.

Enhancements to the facility include: new lighting, heating, roof, insulation, ventilation, painting, resurfacing of the courts, new backdrops, divider curtains, nets and new furnishings for the Tennis Shop.

In addition to the company's goal of investing in companies to promote the local economy, a conscious effort was also made to be environmentally friendly. The club recycled all previous heaters, light fixtures and fluorescent tubes replaced during the renovation.

Our new lights, in particular, will provide more and better than we had with our previous lights, which used 520 fluorescent tubes, and will also reduce our energy consumption by about 70 percent, said Guy Guarino, general manager. "DTE Energys credits on these lights and our heaters help make this not only good for our planet, but also for our budgets.

Embedded systems solutions company Spansion Inc. has released a series of intelligent LED driver integrated circuits (IC) solutions.

Integrating the necessary components for intelligent lighting into a single chip solution, the S6AL211 series is designed to reduce development costs and speed time to market. The series support industry-leading communication standards including DALI, DMX and Bluetooth Smart. Spansion logo

The product series feature a 4-channel buck DC/DC LED driver IC and can dim brightness down to 0.1% with the ability to adjust up to 100%. The S6AL211 integrates all the peripheral components including pre-drivers, sensing amps, and LDOs needed to configure the LED driver circuits. The integrated solution minimizes printed circuit board (PCB) by up to 25% compared to competing solutions, reducing the bill of materials and delivering a cost-competitive offering.

"LEDs are clearly on a growth path to outpace legacy lights and will be used in everything from indoor lighting in office buildings, hospitals and displays in shops and museums to outdoor lighting," said Tom Sparkman, SVP of Spansion's Analog Business. The first product of S6AL211A31, which supports the DALI standard, is sampling now at $5.80 per unit and will be in production in December 2014.

The second product of S6AL211A94, which supports the Bluetooth Smart module, will be sampling in December 2014.
