VOLT Lighting Adds High-Performance LED PAR Lamps to Retrofit Line - August 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) August 11, 2014

VOLT Lighting, a direct-to-consumer manufacturer and distributor of premium-quality lighting products, announced today the introduction of LED PAR Lamps (Bulbs) to their growing line of LED light sources. This addition is a continuation of VOLT Lightings strategy to provide homeowners and contractors with affordable high-performance LED versions of all commonly used bulbs.

PAR lamps, well known for their use in outdoor security and accent lighting, are commonly used in ceilings, under awnings and mounted high above garages all areas difficult to access when changing bulbs. Switching to VOLTs lifetime LED PAR lamps means forever eliminating the risk and inconvenience of changing these bulbs while saving up to 85% in energy costs.

Alan Brynjolfsson, VOLT Lighting president, remarked on the new line, Our LED PAR Bulbs have some unique comparative advantages: The light is warm, pleasing and matches the look of existing incandescent bulbs. Our PAR LED bulbs are rated for wet locations so they can be mounted indoors or outdoors. They are dimmable and have the longest warranty in the industry lifetime.

VOLT Lighting introduces five models of these popular bulbs that vary in size and wattage:

Ty Russum, Commerce Director, explains the companys online advantage, When consumers search for lighting products on the Internet, they can end up in one of many lighting (so-called) super stores or they can end up at VOLT Lightings website; every super store site has higher prices and products that may be good or poor quality its nearly impossible for the consumer to make an informed decision. On the other hand, at the VOLT site, customers find a streamlined selection of high-quality products (with easy-to-understand descriptions and videos) at incredibly low prices. It makes it easy and fast for consumers to buy the lights they need.

VOLT Lighting is also known for fast shipping and excellent customer service. Recently awarded with Googles Trusted Store certificate, the company has fully stocked warehouses nation-wide with one- or two-day delivery to most locations.

About VOLT Lighting Based in Tampa, Florida, VOLT Lighting manufactures and distributes high-performance indoor and outdoor lighting products. VOLTs line of durable outdoor LED fixtures and indoor LED light bulbs carry an unconditional lifetime warranty. Indoor Farming: Future Takes Root In Abandoned Buildings, Warehouses, Empty Lots & High Rises - August 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a 90,000-square foot warehouse not far from Chicagos Midway Airport, the future of urban farming has taken root. Long shelves thick with fresh herbs and salad greens sit beneath hundreds of fluorescent grow lights. Theres planters of basil, watercress and kale stacked in neat rows reaching to the ceiling, afloat in a nutrient-rich stream of water fed by large blue tanks filled with tilapia. Its an eerily beautiful scene, interrupted only by the occasional worker driving an aerial lift through the aisles, stopping to pluck handfuls of greens ready to be packaged and distributed throughout the city.

Welcome to the world of vertical farming.

A tilapia fish tank that provides nutrient-rich water to plants at Chicago's FarmedHere. FarmedHere

As the demand for fresh, locally-grown food has increased among urban consumers, businesses like FarmedHere, which runs the Chicago warehouse, have stepped in to compete with conventional farms. Using advanced hydroponic and aquaponic methods, theyre growing fruits and vegetables year-round in facilities that are often in the same neighborhood as the restaurants and retailers they supply. Proponents like to call it ultra-local farming.

We can grow 200 percent more food per square foot than traditional agriculture, and without the use of chemical fertilizers, said Mark Thomann, chief executive officer of FarmedHere.

According to the Association for Vertical Farming, an industry trade group, vertical farms use 98 percent less water and 70 percent less fertilizers on average than outdoor farms. Weather fluctuations arent a factor, and neither is soil management. They can harvest crops as often as 20 times a year, and with their stack-it-high layout, occupy a fraction of the land traditional agriculture requires.

So efficient is vertical farming that many believe it could move beyond a niche market and become a solution for food insecurity in the United States, which affects nearly 15 percent of households, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Some believe it could even be the future of agriculture altogether, with climate change negatively affecting rural farmland while the global population continues to swell. By 2050, the World Health Organization estimates, there will be 9 billion people on Earth, with 70 percent of them residing in urban areas.

But before vertical farming can conquer the world, it has to prove it can scale up and be as environmentally sound as its backers claim. Of the many questions surrounding these ventures, the most important one may be whether it is a good business model to begin with.

Thomann certainly believes so. In the two years FarmedHere has been in business, it has expanded distribution to dozens of supermarkets throughout Chicago, including all of the citys Whole Foods locations. The company packages its own herbs and salad greens, which are certified organic, and can deliver to stores within 24 hours of the product being harvested.

Retail Notebook: Lighting Gallery, Belk - August 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

April Blizzard has been letting her lights shine for 25 years, and her daughter Kelly has carried on the torch for the past couple of years.

Blizzard and her husband Thomas, a Deep Run native, own The Lighting Gallery a subsidiary of her husbands 55-year business, Blizzards Building Supply.

Kelly Blizzard has worked for her mother at the lighting store since the early 1990s, and has been managing it since her mother took semi-retirement.

April Blizzard said she still works there every other Saturday morning and when shes needed.

She grew up in Idaho and met Thomas in Utah when he was in the U.S. Air Force.

When she graduated with a nursing degree from St. Benedicts Hospital School of Nursing in 1961, she and her husband moved to Kinston where she continued her studies at ECU and taught nursing at Lenoir Memorial Hospitals then-School of Nursing.

Im in my second career now, Blizzard said about the lighting business. In the late 1970s, she worked part-time at her nephews lighting store, The Lamplighter Shop, until a disaster occurred.

There was a fire in 1987 that leveled the whole shopping center, she said, and we were out of business for the whole year.

Blizzards nephew didnt want to start up the business again, so Thomas and his brother rebuilt their building at Village Square Shopping Center and his wife opened The Lighting Gallery in August 1989. Were actually in the same location, she said, but were in the opposite end of The Lamplighter Shop.

Kelly earned a degree in interior design and took a seasonal job in Moorehead City. When she came back to Kinston, she began working in the flooring business next to The Lighting Gallery until a vacancy opened up in her mothers shop.

Indoor practices keep Tigers on their toes - August 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Thursday, August 7, 2014 | 9:38 p.m. CDT; updated 10:58 p.m. CDT, Thursday, August 7, 2014

COLUMBIA Missouri freshman wide receiver Lawrence Lee streaked toward the end zone. Overhead, the football floated under the lights.

Lee made a quick adjustment with his body and reached out his hands. The ball grazed his fingertips and bounced on the turf, tumbling toward the end zone.

Lee pursued the pigskin, scooping it up and veering off his route at the last second saving himself and the ball from careening into the offensive linemen who were practicing blocking drills in the Devine Practice Facility end zone.

On Thursday, rain forced the Tigers' practice indoors. In the tighter confines, players had to maintain spatial awareness. As Missouri assistant coaches explained, safety is a concern in such close quarters. Quarterbacks can't throw the ball deep as often. And receivers must adjust to the lighting and the fact that offensive linemen are tussling in the end zone.

The indoor facility houses a 90-yard field with a single true end zone including a goalpost at one end.

It's apparent the loss of space can create some hazards.

Aside from Lee's close call with the offensive linemen, there were two other near collisions during the first 45 minutes of practice. On one occasion, redshirt freshman Eddie Serrano fell over fellow defensive lineman A.J. Logan during a defensive pass-catching drill. Logan, a Rock Bridge graduate and also a redshirt freshman, was retrieving a football when Serra back-pedaled into him.
