TUNBRIDGE Wells indoor tennis courts have been officially re-opened following the installation of LED lights costing 200,000.
Mayor of the town Dr Ronen Basu cut the ribbon at a ceremony at Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre on Monday after watching children demonstrate their skills on the tennis courts.
The new LED lights, paid for by the council, have been installed to keep costs down due to the amount of energy they reduce, estimated at 27 tonnes of carbon per year.
Dr Ronen Basu said: Perhaps all this new technology will inspire the players who use the courts, and who knows, we might even have a future Wimbledon champion who begins their tennis career here under these new lights.
The new eco-friendly lights will switch off lights in unused courts and maximise natural light, using daylight censors to achieve the required level of writing.
Steve Jarrett, director of Jarrett Tennis School which is based at the centre, said: The new LED lighting is the first of its kind in the South East, and a welcome investment by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and Fusion Lifestyle. The original lighting was expensive to run and poor in quality.
The original lights were installed when the centre was built in 1993.
Mr Jarrett believes the new lights have the capacity to transform the tennis centre for the people who use it.
He said: These lights, along with the comprehensive, quality programme on offer with Jarrett Tennis School, puts the centre on a par with some of the best tennis centres in the country.

Architectural Area Lightings Popular Pivot Floodlight Now Available in LED
The CEO and co-founder of Wifarer, Philip Stanger, has left the company and assumed an unidentified "leadership role" at Apple, according to sources for TechCrunch. Rumors had hinted that Wifarer might have been bought by Apple. Instead control of Wifarer has shifted to Stanger's wife, Lise Murphy, who was previously VP of Marketing.
The firm specializes in indoor positioning technology, adding to evidence that such technology could be coming to Apple Maps. In March of last year Apple bought another indoor positioning outfit, WiFiSlam, in a deal worth $20 million. Apple is likely hoping to better compete with Google, which is already well ahead in terms of indoor mapping.
Why Apple would only want Stanger is unclear. Although Wifarer has developed technology for iOS and Android, Stanger has a non-technical background both in terms of education and his work experience, which includes employers like Paramount Pictures and the BBC. Wifarer as a company may not be valuable enough, as it has shrunk to less than a dozen people in the past year, and has yet to win the patents on its ideas.
