    University unveils new air purifier technology-Eastday - January 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    BEIJING, Jan. 7 -- Chinese researchers have developed a new technology to clean up indoor air pollution that avoids secondary pollution that existing air purification products in the market can create if used improperly.

    The new air purifier, developed by a research team from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, removes indoor pollutants from air through physical and chemical methods.

    Professor Shangguan Wenfeng, who led the research project, said at a news conference on Monday that current air purifiers clean the air mainly by absorption and filtering, but this technique has problems.

    For example, the filter needs to be replaced regularly because it will easily reach the saturation point, which might lead to further pollution,he said.

    Also, while some machines cannot filter smaller pollutants well, the schools new technology overcomes that shortcoming, he said.

    The new technology removes indoor pollutants through high-voltage electrostatic and catalytic purification.

    The electrostatics process the PM2.5airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers that can go deep into the lungsand other air pollutants from outdoors.

    During this process, volatile organic compounds and a small amount of ozone are produced. The second, catalysis module transforms these harmful organic compounds and ozone into harmless carbon dioxide and water.

    A test was conducted during the news conference. Because Shanghai air quality was classified asgoodat the time, researchers made a smoggy indoor environment in a 30-square-meter room by lighting six cigarettes. The PM2.5 reading soon reached 700 micrograms per cubic meter, far exceeding the index limit level of 500.

    When the machine was switched on, the particles in the room gradually disappeared, with the reading less than 100 within an hour.

    TACOMA, Wash. Thomas Edisons first public demonstration of the incandescent light bulb happened 134 years ago Tuesday.

    But on Wednesday, the lights dimmed for the incandescent because of federal energy efficiency standards approved in 2007.

    As of Jan. 1, companies no longer can import or make 60- and 40-watt incandescent light bulbs the most popular bulb for indoor lighting. Instead, LED (light-emitting diode) and CFL (compact fluorescent) will replace incandescents as the dominant home fixture.

    The new light bulbs reduce energy use and save consumers money. Experts say 90 percent of the electricity used by traditional incandescent light bulbs is radiated in the form of heat, rather than light.

    While the bulb ban prevents the manufacture or import of incandescents, shoppers still can find the bulbs on the shelves. Since people have known the ban was coming for some time, there were no last-minute crowds shopping for incandescents Tuesday, Fred Meyer spokeswoman Melinda Merrill said.

    Traditional 75- and 100-watt incandescent bulbs were to be phased out at the beginning of 2013. Home Depot stores in some areas of the country have a six-month supply of incandescent bulbs. Merrill said Fred Meyer has a two-month supply of various incandescent bulbs.

    The CFLs have become more popular and LEDs have become more popular, she said.

    Lighting is no minor matter at the Tacoma Art Museum, where three galleries are lit with ceramic metal halide lamps. That has allowed the museum to reduce the number of fixtures it has and save money at the same time.

    One gallery, which houses the museums collection of Chihuly glass, still uses incandescent lighting at Dale Chihulys request, said museum director Stephanie Stebich.

    He prefers a warmer, hotter light and it makes the vessels glow, she said.

    In the Newtown Square Fire Companys announcement of the winners of the 2013 Holiday Lighting Contest, the local volunteers and Fire Company Award Committee also stated they were appreciative of the many homes and businesses that vied for this years recognitions.

    In this Second Annual Holiday Lighting Contest, there were four residential classes, one for local businesses, and two additional categories, Best Decorated Street and The Peoples Choice.

    Winners in the categories established for individual residences included the following:

    The Clark W Griswold Theme award (criteria: excessive use of outdoor lights and decorations) was won by Jeffrey King, 27 Pine Street.

    The Nostalgic Theme award (criteria: most old-fashioned decorated house; best reminds viewers of a display from their childhood) was won by the Carden family, 324 Echo Valley Lane.

    The Religious Theme award (criteria: best display with a religious theme) The Goodwin family, 4233 Florida Avenue.

    The Inside Out Theme award (criteria: the best indoor display of decorations and lights which are visible from the outside of the home) Lucetta Burke, 4263 Florida Avenue.

    There were two additional residential awards that were again presented this year.

    The Best Decorated Street award was earned by the 4200 Block of Florida Avenue. The Peoples Choice award -- the winner was selected by ballots submitted by the general public via the Newtown Square Fire Company web page -- is the Bruno family, 116 Stoney Brook Blvd.

The biggest take-home message from this thorough examination is the popularity of the full-body shot. These increase attention to profile by about 203 percent. That buys you the ability to use the 🙂 emoji dozens of times before turning everyone off.

    Advances in LEDs and lithium-ion batteries have produced some unusual new flashlights.

    Looking for a last-minute stocking stuffer? Technology improvements and cost reductions in LEDs (think indoor lighting) and lithium-ion batteries (think laptops and electric cars) are making for some very interestingand unusualflashlights.

    These flashlights are dramatically brighter than any non-LED flashlight that I have ever used. The light comes from high-intensity devices such as the CREE XLamp XM-L. The XM-L can draw as much as 10 watts of power, which produces 1,040 lumens of output. Thats considerably brighter than a 60-watt incandescent bulb (which produces 800 lumens), but all of the light is collimate in a flashlight, so its more like a traditional outdoor floodlight.

    Unlike the bulb in traditional flashlights, the CREE LED needs some electronics to drive it properly. Flashlight vendors have not passed up the chance to gild the lily. Most of the flashlights that Ive tested offer up to five different modes: high, medium, low, flashing, and SOS (three short flashes, three long, and three short again, corresponding to Morse code). Annoyingly, theres only a single switch, so you need to repeatedly press the button10 times!to cycle the between all the modes.

    Most of these flashlights are based on the 18650 battery, a 3.6-volt lithium-ion battery thats a little longer than a traditional D cell and a little wider than an AA. The 18650 is best known for its use in Teslas racers, but it was previously used in laptops. Cars and laptops use multiple 18650s with solder tabs wired together. For flashlight use you get batteries with a button and flat top, just like a traditional flashlight battery. The 18650 requires a special charger; you can buy four generic 3,000-milliam-hour batteries for $7.86 on Amazon; each packs roughly the same power as two high-capacity rechargeable AAs. I bought a set of generics and had one fail, so be sure to buy a few extra.

    Some of flashlights can run on either a lithium-ion or standard alkaline AA or AAA batteriesuseful for an emergency light you might leave in your car, since alkaline batteries can hold a charge for years. In my tests I got anywhere from two to six hours of continuous use on a flashlight depending on the mode. Frequently I could turn the flashlight off for a few hours and then get a few more minutes of high-power output when I turned it back on. Like conventional flashlights, the LEDs will slowly fade as you use them; be sure to have a spare pair of charged batteries ready to go.

    There are quite a few of these flashlights on the market now from a variety of manufacturers. Items of differentiation include the number of modes, the zoom lens (from spotlight to wide-angle), the brightness of the LED, and the number of batteries.

    I bought a selection of the flashlights from Amazon and tried them out. I dont have a lumens meter, so the specs are from the website.

    UltraFire CREE XML-L T6This flashlight with a bronzed tip and five modes weighs 140 grams and is 13 centimeters long, so it fits nicely in the hand. It comes with a wrist strap. The CREE T6 bulb produces 1,800 lumens. I got more than five hours of output on low, which was still plenty bright.

    Ultrafire W-878This versatile flashlight can be powered by an 18650 battery, a 26650 battery, or three AAA batteries. (The 26650 is larger still than the 18650 and packs 5,000 milliamp-hours or more.) Five modes, 196 grams, 14 centimeters lomg, with wrist strap. Reportedly delivers 1,000 lumens.

    It can be difficult to provide enough light to your houseplants due to seasonal changes or lack of window space. Whether it's for your full-grown houseplants or starter seedlings, check out these ideas for indoor lighting.

    Incandescent lights are good for lighting up a room or growing low-light houseplants, such as vines, ferns or dracaenas. They have limited utility for growing plants with higher light requirements. These lights put out only about 10 percent of their energy as light while 90 percent is heat. So, unless you want to cook your plants, they aren't ideal for light-loving plants like many tropicals, cacti or succulents.

    Fluorescent lights are ideal for plants with low to medium light requirements, like African violets. They are also good for starting vegetables indoors. These lights typically come in long, tubelike bulbs in a range of sizes including T5, T8 and T12.

    The narrower the bulb, the more efficient and brighter it is, due to the smaller surface area. In addition to this, fluorescent bulbs use 75 percent less energy than incandescent lights. So, for example, a 25-watt fluorescent emits about as much light as a 100-watt incandescent light bulb. T5 systems put out about double the amount of light per tube as standard fluorescent lights. They are 6500 Kelvin and also full spectrum, which is very intense light.

    Kelvin is a basic unit of color temperature used to measure the whiteness of a light's output; it's the degree of visual warmth or coolness of a light source. So the higher the degree of Kelvin, the bluer, or "cool," the lamp appears. The lower the degree of Kelvin, the redder, or "warm," it appears.

    When growing most houseplants, use light bulbs between 4000 and 6000 Kelvin, as the bulb's color temperature will borrow from a full spectrum of colors cools and warms. With these lights, you can actually mimic the growth you would get in a greenhouse or outdoors. Culinary herbs, greens and starter plants can be grown year-round with them. Houseplants that need lots of light, like cattleya orchids, succulents and carnivorous plants, also perform much better under these full-spectrum lights. With starter plants and seedlings, place the T8 or T5 bulbs two to four inches from the plants to mimic the sun. For established plants, including herbs or houseplants, place them a foot or two from the light source.

    Compact fluorescents are great for lighting indoor houseplants without having to use a full T5 system and for a fraction of the cost of incandescent lights. Wattage varies, so be sure to ask a specialist what will work best for you and your lighting needs. Carnivorous plants and phalaenopsis orchids do well under compact fluorescents.

    Customer inspired innovation led to the release of a unique pre-cut light-emitting diode (LED) tape light system. Homeowners now have a way to install their own under cabinet lighting without the hassles of splicing electrical wire, soldering connections, or drilling holes into their cabinetry. Or to be more realistic of the typical homeowner experience going on Angies list, calling friends, reading reviews on Yelp.com, to find an affordable and reliable electrician to install their task lighting.

    Often times, contractors will use halogen puck lights for their under cabinet lighting systems. Installation is a relatively messy process as the electrician needs to drill holes into the underside of the cabinetry to strategically mount the puck lights above the center of the countertop. Wires need to be measured and spliced to run along the bottom of the cabinet, then connected to the transformer to plug into the wall. Having been a general contractor for over twenty-five years, Tom Piana owner of Affordable Quality Lighting, had intimate knowledge of the back-breaking installation process.

    Even when tape light came out it still didnt help homeowners avoid the splicing or soldering part of the installation process, Tom Piana said during a recent interview. With LED tape lighting systems coming in rolls of five to six feet, a homeowner would still have to measure the necessary length and cut the tape light to fit their needs. This increased the risk of damaging the individual diodes, or splicing at the improper section, causing an entire strand of diodes to burn out instantly. I wanted homeowners to be able to truly install their own lighting my goal was to eliminate the hassle and risk under cabinet lighting installation created. Looking at the pre-cut system in lengths of 8, 12, and 16 strips of easy connect tape light, coupled with the plug and play connectors, Tom Piana is well on his way to achieving his original goal.

    Unlike the traditional halogen puck light system, which created hot spots of light, AQLs unique LED tape light system creates an even glow across the countertop without generating excess heat. The tape light doesnt require any drilling or mounting brackets; it literally sticks to the underside of the cabinet with 3m adhesive. Tom took the design of his LED tape light one step further by covering the diodes with a weather-proofing epoxy coat. While it isnt necessary to have the epoxy coating for indoor systems, Tom felt it was important to allow homeowners to wipe their cabinets clean with a damp cloth or windex their countertops without fear of damaging the tiny bulbs in their tape light system. The coating also allowed AQL's plug and play system to be rated for outdoor use, so the easy installation isnt confined solely to indoor lighting.

    Its clear that Tom's LED tape light kit was built with the homeowner in mind. The strip of 5050 diodes provide brighter light for more task oriented uses, as well as connects to a dimmer to subdue the lighting when desired. The jumper connections were designed to plug from the tape light to the transformer without any soldering or wire splicing. Just line up the arrows and snap the connection together. It's about as easy as putting two Lego blocks together. The ingenuity on AQLs part to create a homeowner friendly task lighting product is certainly bringing the lighting industry one step further down the path of innovation.
