How this ex-maid became a top make-up artist - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANILA - For years, Myra Bendana worked as a house helper, before becoming a janitress, waitress, bartender and entertainer in Japan.

Thanks to her hard work, she started her own salon business and is now a professional make-up artist.

In an interview on "My Puhunan," Bendaa narrated how she started out as being a house helper when she left Bicol to start anew in Manila.

"Nung gumradweyt ako ng high school, alam ko na hindi na talaga ako makakapag-college... Kasi sabi ng Tatay ko, 'okay babae ka, mag-aasawa ka lang'," she said, recalling what urged her to leave her hometown.

Bendaa said she was excited to go to Manila. For four years, she moved from one employer to another as a house helper.

She also became a janitress, waitress, bartender, and eventually flew to Japan to look for a better job.

One day, however, she decided to go back to school, in search for a new direction in life.

"Hanggang one day, nung naka-ipon ako, gusto ko talagang mag-aral... Kasi wala akong makukuhang matinong trabaho na maayos kung hindi ako nakapag-aral kasi high school graduate lang," she said.

After earning enough, she took the chance to open her own salon.

Although barely knowing anything about opening a business, she read up on different materials and opened the salon after just two weeks.

Uber Emails Rape Survivor to Say It's Back in Delhi - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

New Delhi: US taxi-hailing app maker Uber Technologies Inc has restarted services in Delhi after a ban following rape allegations against one of its drivers, but a government official said the company remains blacklisted.

The US-based lawyer hired by the financial executive who was raped in December said Uber had emailed her to inform her it "has re-entered the market in Delhi."

The lawyer, Douglas Wigdor, said that, "We had made it clear to Uber that the rape victim wanted to be part of a consultation process regarding safety procedures to ensure that no other person becomes a victim at the hands of an Uber driver."

Uber's app showed taxis available in New Delhi on Friday. The company has applied for a radio taxi license, a spokesman said to Reuters.

"They can't start operations," said a senior transport official, who was not authorised to speak with the media on the matter and so declined to be identified. "They don't have a license yet, they have only applied for it."

"We are setting an even higher standard than current industry requirements," Uber said in a statement.

After a financial executive said she was raped by a driver last month, Delhi's government banned Uber and other taxi-hailing app providers from operating in the city. Uber later said it did not carry out background checks on drivers in India, and authorities revealed the suspect was on bail for sexual assault

The driver, Shiv Kumar Yadav , is being tried in a fast-track court on the capital.

Mr Wigdor was hired by the survivor earlier this month. Mr Wigdor was the lawyer for Nafissatou Diallo, the New York hotel maid, who accused Dominique Strass-Kahn of assaulting her in a hotel in 2011; he was chief of the International Monetary Fund at the time. The case was reportedly settled for six million dollars.

Weekend help for those with elderly dependants - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MADAM Tan Sok Meng had been looking for help to take care of her 89-year-old mother on weekends.

Her mother is cared for at the Hong Kah North Day Care Centre from Mondays to Fridays.

But on some weekends, Madam Tan, 52, needs some free time to run errands and do some of her chores. However, since a fall a few years ago, her mother cannot be left alone.

Her mother, Madam Yeow Ah Thong, who is frail and suffers from kidney failure, high blood pressure and anaemia, is at risk of falling again, doctors have warned.

The stockbroker's frantic hunt for help on weekends ended when Hong Kah North Day Care Centre joined seven other centres to offer weekend respite care last July.

Like Madam Tan, more than 70 families have found great relief with the launch of this service.

Two more centres will start to offer weekend care by April. Together, the 10 centres, which are scattered around the island, will be able to care for 240 seniors of varying disabilities each weekend.

Currently, many slots are still available for those who need occasional weekend care, but those providing the service expect this to change when more come to know about the service.

This service complements another one under which 17 nursing homes offer care for a few days or weeks.

That scheme, launched in May 2013, has helped the families of more than 330 seniors, who spent an average of 23 days in the nursing homes.

Board shuts down agent for Brazilian Court condo owners - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Several owners of condominium units at the Brazilian Court will have to find a new way to rent their properties.

The Code Enforcement Board voted 4-3 Thursday to shut down agent Leslie Diver, who managed rental inquiries for eight owners via an online vacation rental site. She also arranged cleaning and laundry services.

Town staff said Diver violated a town ordinance that prohibits using a building or land in a residential district for commercial or quasi-commercial purposes.

We believe that Ms. Diver is conducting a hotel operation within the Brazilian Court Hotel, said Code Enforcement Manager Raychel Houston. Ms. Diver is renting out individual units at the hotel on a nightly, weekly or monthly basis. In effect, she has a competing hotel rental program in addition to the rooms that the hotel is renting themselves.

Timothy Hanlon, Divers attorney, said owners have the right to rent their units and Diver is simply acting as an agent.

She receives no commission from the sales, he said. She doesnt employ any cleaning services, she merely arranges for the work to be done. All the payment is done by the owners. There is no operation of a hotel. I think that is a gross exaggeration.

Diver said she doesnt receive money directly from the website or renters but does charge owners a $200 flat fee plus $25 an hour for additional services.

You are getting paid and its in conjunction with certain services that youre providing, said Code Board Chairman Harris Fried. Youre using that building, the physical edifice, to run a commercial or quasi-commercial business.

    Competing rental systems

Owners hired Diver to oversee renting their properties because they couldnt get the hotel to do it, Hanlon said.

Mother for hire: Start-up takes care of 'personal chores' for young professionals, students - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a typical week, Ilene Scoratow does 30 loads of laundry, cleans two to four apartments and delivers groceries to at least four regular customers.

She has three children of her own, including an infant. But in her free time after her day job, Ms. Scoratow runs a service called Another Mother, where she performs some of the basic tasks one might expect of a parent.

I was reading a book on entrepreneurship because I wanted to start my own business, Ms. Scoratow said. All the advice she read suggested sticking with something youre good at. So I thought about it: I like to teach and I like being a mom.

She started about a year ago and sticks primarily to the East End, where she lives. From 6:30 a.m to 3 p.m., she goes to her day job as a Spanish teacher at Colfax Elemetary.

At 3 p.m., she takes whatever appointments she has that afternoon from her business. Shes not working entirely alone; her husband helps with the day-to-day business and at home, and she has brought two other teachers on as independent contractors.

Currently she has a clientele of about 40 people, including younger working professionals and university students. Its pretty evenly split among Pitt, Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne and Chatham, she said.

While shes done some modest local advertising, Ms. Scoratow says most of her referrals are via word-of-mouth. She charges an $8 delivery fee for groceries, and $1.50 per pound of laundry. New customers, most of whom come to her via her website, pay a $20 deposit via Paypal, then she invoices them for the balance after shes finished the job.

The personal chore business is no longer just the domain of professional maid services, but has become a fast-growing part of the so-called sharing economy.

For instance, San Francisco-based Taskrabbit lets users outsource small jobs and errands like food deliveries and furniture assembly via a smartphone app. Homejoy, also based in San Francisco, offers home cleaning services. Neither one offers its services yet in Pittsburgh.

Another Mothers true target audience, whether students or young professionals, is millennials, a generation that gets a lot of bad press for the perception that theyre too dependent on their parents and may be taking a long time to transition into adulthood successfully. A 2012 Clark University study found some 30 percent of the parents of millennials, loosely defined as 18- to 29-year-olds, provide at least occasional financial support to their children.
