Sherwood takes its Robin Hood Festivalseriously. Jessica Bertalotto is no exception. She'll be one of few who preside over Friday's knighting ceremony. She also has the responsibility of shooting the first arrow during the festival's archery contest.

The 17-year-old Sherwood High senior and member of this year's Maid Marian Court the 60th in the city's history sat down for a Q&A in the midst of Old Town as volunteers and event coordinators made the area look more like Nottingham than a modern Oregon town.

What made you want to be a part of the Maid Marian court?

I just thought it'd be a good way to get involved in the community. I really liked that my mom had done it and I wanted to be a second-generation Maid Marian.

When you apply, you answer questions about how you're involved and how you want to change the community and how you want to make it better.

And how are you involved with your community in Sherwood?

I serve with my youth group at Sherwood United Methodist Church. I usually go on mission trips we have a lot of mission trips. There's usually about 35 hours of community service on each trip. I also help with the chamber of commerce a lot.

I just think it's important to give back to the community we have such a great community here and I want to do my part.

What do you like about that community?

It's been growing a lot but it's still got that hometown feel and everyone really cares about each other. One of our teachers was diagnosed with breast cancer this past year while she was pregnant, so we had the Egg Hunt for Hope for her and raised $40,000. I thought it was really awesome that the community did that for her."

Singapores Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has denied media reports that domestic workers from the Philippines, Indonesia and Burma (Myanmar) were being displayed in malls in the city-state and made available for hire at cheap or discounted prices.

The Al Jazeera TV network reported last month that foreign domestic workers were being marketed like commodities at the Bukit Timah Shopping Centre in central Singapore and at Katong Shopping Centre on Mountbatten Road.

But MOM said it visited the two shopping centers concerned and did not find any inappropriate display of foreign domestic workers.

Basic respect in practices

MOM requires employment agencies to be responsible and accord basic respect in their practices to both their clientsthe employer and the foreign domestic workersand expects them to exercise sensitivity when marketing their fees or services, MOM said in a statement released Wednesday.

The ministry also deemed an unacceptable practice the alleged inappropriate display of foreign domestic workers in the premises of employment agencies.

The Al Jazeera report said foreign domestic workers were shown in galleries called Homekeeper and Budget Maid demonstrating household and care-giving chores, such as pushing the wheelchairs of the elderly and changing diapers of a baby doll.

Super promo rates

The report also said the workers were advertised on super promo rates and special discounts, with Filipinos tagged as smarter, Indonesians as less bright and Burmese workers as sweet-natured and compliant.

The Philippines has barred two maid agencies in Singapore from recruiting Filipinos after they were linked to marketing schemes that purportedly treated maids as commodities at shopping malls in Singapore.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, labour secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the Philippine embassy in Singapore has suspended the accreditation of Homekeeper Agency, which calls itself the industry and market leader on its website.

Another firm, Budget Maid Agency, has been referred to Singapores Ministry of Manpower, as it has been recruiting Filipinos without accreditation from the Philippine Overseas Labour Office, said Baldoz.

She also announced that the labour department is looking into four licensed recruitment agencies in the Philippines that have been providing applicants to Homekeeper.

The Al Jazeera news organisation reported last Friday that some maid agencies were displaying maids from the Philippines, Indonesia and Myanmar at shopping malls in Singapore.

The report mentioned two malls Bukit Timah Shopping Centre and Katong Shopping Centre that it said had rooms and galleries where dozens of women sit beneath garish signs and posters testifying to their friendliness and industriousness and offering their services at super promo rates and special discounts.
