Though still in her early twenties, the hardships of living in an impoverished informal area with little or no access to water or other services has left their mark on Samahs pale face and thin body.

Samah left primary school to work as a maid. Working in homes where she could at least enjoy putting her hands in water and having a nourishing meal seemed like heaven. At least I could have a better life there, she said.

Her words bespeak the hardship of living in the informal area of Ezbet Al-Hagganna on the outskirts of Nasr City, where there is little security and crime is rife. Samah lives with her family in a small flat in a shabby building with no private bathroom. She shares a small childs bedroom with her three sisters and a brother.

I was hardly allowed to play in a park when I was little, simply because we didnt have one in our area, and I have only ever seen the sea on TV, Samah said. We rarely have water at home, and I have to spend my only day off work filling and carrying water buckets from a nearby area.

Has life become any better after two revolutions? What are you talking about? Samah asked incredulously. Life has become worse due to the price hikes, unemployment, and the absence of security. We do not trust the governments promises or that anyone will ever care for the poor.

Samah is, however, luckier than many other residents of such areas. In an earlier report on informal areas in Cairo and Giza, I was told heartbreaking stories of the inhumane conditions people are forced to live in.

Some families shared a mattress on the floor of a tin kiosk with a cardboard ceiling that gave them little protection from the winter rains. Many reported the prevalence of crime, disease and dangerous insects and snakes. Sewage had leaked into the Saft Al-Laban, a waterway in the Giza governorate, and some schools were located close to sewage ponds.

Despite such hardships, however, almost everyone who talked to Al-AhramWeekly still insisted they would not move away from the places where they live. They hoped to be either relocated to safe buildings in the same neighbourhood or provided with services that would make their living conditions more tolerable.

ALARMING FIGURES: In his book Understanding Cairo: The Logic of a City Out of Control, the American author David Sims, an economist and urban planner, paints a bleak picture. Egypt seems by far to have the most extensive informal urban development of any Arab country, said Sims, adding that such developments are increasing at a very rapid rate.

Faux Maid Agent Sentenced to 2-Year Jail - November 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A thirty-four-year-old local woman, who posed as an employment agent, was sentenced to jail for twenty four months and ordered to pay BND$22,920 in compensation to a group of people who paid her money to secure the services of maids.

Nazura Garip has to serve an additional eighteen months and two weeks in jail if she fails to pay the compensation, which is equivalent to the amount of deposit money she received from 11 clients between October 2011 and May 2013.

She convinced her clients to hand over the money after they selected maids from a list of biodata, which she had created. The deposits varied from BND$500 to BND$2,500.

Nazura used to pick foreign women, who were in the country on social visit passes, to send to her clients' houses to work as maids.

However, after a few days she would take them away on the pretext that the maids had to undergo a medical examination and apply for an identity card.

She used to replace the maids several times to convince her clients that she is an authorised maid agent. When Nazura could not find a foreign woman to work as a maid, she would stop contacting her clients.

A police report was lodged by one of her clients, who did not get a maid after paying money, which prompted a probe into the case.

Nazura had asked the court for a fine instead of a jail term, however, Magistrate Hajah Ervy Rahman ruled that imprisonment is justified as her crime is serious. BRUDIRECT.COM

Abuse of workers not behind Kenya maid ban - October 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Saudi Ministry of Labor has rejected reports that Kenya has stopped sending domestic workers to the Kingdom because of the abuse of these workers by their employers. Ahmed Al-Faheed, Saudi Ministry undersecretary for international affairs, said the Kenyan government stopped sending workers to all Middle East countries because it is investigating its own recruitment agencies for human trafficking. He said the Kenyan government has asked all recruitment firms in the country to reapply for their licenses. Al-Faheed denied allegations that the Kenyan government has complained to the Saudi Labor Ministry about the abuse of its workers in the Kingdom. In addition, the Kenyan government did not seek to sign a labor agreement with Saudi Arabia as a condition for lifting the ban, he said. According to a statement from the Kenyan government, the decision was taken to stop the export of all Kenyan workers and cancel the endorsement certificates issued to recruiting offices, to all Middle East countries for the time being, Al-Faheed said. The Kenyan newspaper Coastweek reported on Monday that the countrys Labor Ministry had suspended all recruitment offices in the country. Kenyas Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Services Kazungu Kambi told journalists in Nairobi that the move aims to protect Kenyan migrant workers from exploitation by their foreign employers. Cases of mistreatment of Kenyan workers, particularly house help in the Middle East, has been on the rise and continues to attract international and local attention, Kambi said. All private employment agencies will be required to undergo fresh vetting before they are accredited, he said. Working abroad is the main job opportunity for many Kenyans. Both the Middle East and the Gulf countries are still main work destinations for them to earn a good income. Nonetheless, exporting labor to these regions faces many challenges, he said. The Kenyan press has recently highlighted the conditions of the countrys workers abroad, most recently a story by the newspaper Standard Digital about a Kenyan family alleging that their daughter has been abused in Saudi Arabia. Jane Wangari said that her daughter, Virginia Wanja, 24, arrived in the Kingdom in June this year, and has allegedly been locked up. Wangari said the recruiting agency in Kenya had promised her a job as a computer teacher at a college. However, when Virginia arrived in the country, she was forced to work as a domestic worker for SR419 a month. My daughter decided to escape from her employer and went to the nearest police station to seek help so that she could return to her country, but was arrested and jailed for escaping from her employer, Wangari was quoted as saying.

Youve Got MAIDS|Professional Maid Services Franchise - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In our ever changing world many people are taking small steps to save our earth. Youve Got MAIDS has taken the initiative; were proud to be both environmentally friendly and price competitive with companies that are not bio-friendly. It starts off with the phone estimate. Customers prefer this convenient and straightforward method which also conserves fuel and paper. In fact, most of our correspondences are over the phone or via email. We further lower our fuel consumption and carbon footprint by having our maids carpool to your house. After all, it is the sum of the smaller acts that gives way to the greatest results. On behalf of the staff of Youve Got MAIDS thank you for partnering with us in our vision to protect our planet.

A professional residential maid service is a business which provides house cleaning for homeowners who do not have the time nor desire to clean their own homes. Residential maid services have become increasingly common in America with an industry growth rate of 20% a year.

A professional residential cleaning service, like Youve Got MAIDS, may be a few more dollars than a part-time independent under the table maid(normally between $0.71 & $1.42 a day), but it offers numerous advantages. We provide screened, trained, bonded and insured maids that bring all of the necessary cleaning supplies. In fact, when you hire us, you can delete cleaning products from your shopping list. Also, as a bona fide employer, Youve Got MAIDS is responsible for withholding Social Security income taxes, Medicare Tax, FUTA & SUTA. Most importantly YouveGot MAIDS worker compensation insurance insulates you & your family from personal injury attorneys.

Youve Got MAIDS strives to deliver more than expected each time. We get it. A lot of residential home cleaning service providers over promise and under deliver. At Youve Got MAIDS we want long term relationships with our customers, and our goal is to under promise and over deliver.

If you notice the maids do something that makes you happy, let them know. Better yet let us know by clicking our feedback button. We care. Your compliments are words of encouragement like sunshine to your maidsthey will not grow without it! Our CEO reads each and every piece of feedback before forwarding it to the local franchise office.

At Youve Got MAIDS we understand that communication is key, and we welcome all feedbacknot just the good stuff! We carefully review and share everything with the maids in a construction manner. The good to great feedback gets shared at the morning meeting in front of everyone, and might go on our Wall of Fame! The not so great feedback is reviewed in private, and goes into the employees file. As a company, we consume feedback for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Foundation arranges free maid service for women with cancer - October 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, Melissa Weir, a mother of three young children, thought she could keep up with household chores, even during chemotherapy and daily radiation treatments.

I thought I could handle everything, but the cleaning is really hard during treatment, when you're sick and fatigued, says Weir, 37, who underwent a mastectomy in June. Her cancer was discovered just after she had stopped nursing her youngest daughter, now 2.

Despite a positive outlook, Weir who faces more surgery in March says the pressures of managing her home in the New Homestead neighborhood of Pittsburgh left her feeling not just tired, but stressed. When she learned from a fellow chemo patient about Cleaning for a Reason, a Texas-based foundation that arranges free house cleaning for women with cancer, it seemed to be just what the doctor ordered, Weir says.

I didn't take advantage of a lot of services available to cancer patients, but this was one I definitely needed, says Weir, who contacted Cleaning for a Reason and was put in touch with Sheraden-based Mr. Maid Residential and Commercial Cleaning, one of three area companies that partner in the program.

Once a month, Mr. Maid's Amy Byard has cleaned Weir's home. The last of four visits the maximum number the program allows was in mid-October.

It's been wonderful, says Weir, whose oldest child is 5. I'll miss it tremendously.

Visits were the standard three hours, and would otherwise have cost $100, says Mr. Maid owner Jim Jones. In addition to absorbing the fee, he is required to make a monthly $15 contribution to the foundation, which handles applicant screening and referrals. Jones has handled up to three Cleaning for a Reason clients per month since he joined the program seven years ago. He says he and his staff have reaped unexpected rewards.

I first got into it because, as a new business, I wanted the publicity, but we never pursued that aspect, because we found that being in the program was rewarding enough, Jones says. We've had people cry when we call to schedule appointments. They'll say, I can't believe you're doing this.'

Byard calls the program's clients amazing. They're always asking if they can get me something, like a cold drink, says the Carrick resident. They'll tell me, You don't know how much this means.' It's a little heartbreaking when you know there are only four sessions, and you want to do so much more.

Founded in 2006 by Debbie Sardone, owner of a maid service in Lewisville, Texas, Cleaning for a Reason partners with 1,100 cleaning companies in the United States and Canada, which, so far, have provided $4.5 million worth of free cleaning to cancer survivors, according to the foundation's website.
