Chico >> Fixing the mold and water intrusion problem at Fire Station 5 will likely cost the city about $120,000 to $200,000 more than initially approved, according to a report by Public Works Director Ruben Martinez.
Martinez emphasized Friday he was still reviewing calculations and not all the numbers are represented in his staff report for Tuesday's City Council meeting. He planned to study his options over the weekend to have more details for councilors Tuesday, and then present a final report at the May 20 meeting. "Will the number be in there somewhere? It's possible but it also could be higher than that," Martinez said.
The city has already expended slightly beyond the $25,000 councilors approved in November, and needs significantly more to complete the necessary repairs. Whatever the repairs are, they must ensure the envelope of the building is water-tight to prevent any kind of intrusion that would create the opportunity for mold and serve as a warranty for insurance purposes, Martinez said.
"We do the roof then water gets in elsewhere and we are going to be back in a few months with more mold," he said. "How far do I need to go to make sure that is not going to happen to us down the road?"
Mold remediation began on the station in December, when the City Council decided it could not know about the presence of mold and take no action, even though spore counts were higher outside the station than inside.
Because of the risk that the mold will become airborne once remediation begins, the city determined firefighters who occupy Fire Station 5 could not continue to be housed inside. The Fire Department arranged for a trailer to house firefighters to ensure there would be no lapse in service. They have been using it for the last five months.
Martinez hopes the repairs can begin this summer. The goal is to make the station habitable again.

Mold was discovered in one medical building in Brevard, North Carolina. Because of it, an evacuation was implemented, said a report from citizen-times.com. Meanwhile, stating that anyone could face the same situation, My Cleaning Products shared a tip how to kill mold effectively before its infestation gets worse.
The report, which was published on April 28, 2014, relayed that it was particularly the office of Medical Associates of Transylvania that was relocated due to mold. It shared that a release issued from the Transylvania Regional Hospital confirmed the problem about the fungus in the said building.
According to the report, it was stated in the release that the fungus was specifically growing within the walls of the structure. And as it detailed, a roof leak discovered by the workers was determined as the source of its growth.
Below is a part of the said report.
The Medical Associates of Transylvania medical practice has been temporarily relocated due to mold in its building on Gallimore Road.
Last week, workers discovered water damage caused by a roof leak during heavy rains. The water damage caused "the growth of common mold within the walls of the building," according to a news release from Transylvania Regional Hospital.
My Cleaning Products cited that mold exposure is linked with various health risks. Given that, it stressed that immediate mold cleaning is imperative.
Eliminating the fungus early could save a person from the fungus' worse effects, said MCP. It elaborated that it could prevent more serious health threats and bigger mold removal spending.
Nonetheless, it pointed out that one would need to have a mold removal spray beforehand to be able to kill mold promptly. And as it asserted, Molderizer is the best that anyone could get.

Wolf Disaster Services, a Long Island-based provider of disaster recovery services such as fire restoration, water damage repair and mold remediation to residential and commercial clients throughout Long Island and metro-New York City areas, recently launched their new website at http://www.wolfdisasterservices.com.
When Rich Murray and his family were faced with rebuilding after the devastation that Superstorm Sandy visited upon their family, they moved forward quickly as they knew that they would not get back to normal unless their world was restored to its regular state. Rich, known as The Wolf for his tenacious approach to problem solving and his ability to quickly assess a situation and craft solutions, led the charge for his family. All the while that they were recovering and rebuilding, Rich knew that there were others that would be able to benefit from what he was learning throughout the process. So, out of a personal tragedy Wolf Disaster Services was born with the mission of helping others recover from the loss or damage to their homes and businesses caused by fire, flood and natural disasters.
The one thing that Murray knew he needed was a website and after initial attempts to establish one himself, he reached out to Nesconset-based Anthony Savino to help him build a web presence that would best represent his service offerings. Savino, with over 10 years of experience building award-winning websites for businesses representing a broad cross-section of the Long Island and New York City region, sat with Murray to understand the business and its goals for the future. The site offers visitor friendly navigation and is optimized for search engine rankings that will ensure that people searching for the recovery services offered by Wolf Disaster Recovery will have no problem finding them online.

Roosevelt County employees were putting their paperwork in boxes and packing desk knickknacks Friday, chased from the county courthouse by the discovery of mold throughout the 76-year-old building.
Roosevelt County Manager Charlene said county administration has decided to proceed with remediation, or a thorough cleaning, of the courthouse next week to ensure public and employee safety. Eight types of mold, including a strain of toxic black mold, were found in the building, according to a recent lab report.
A second round of testing was conducted Thursday, but as Webb waits for results, she says there are no other alternatives to the remediation. Webb said 34 people work in the courthouse.
The report showed the most significant amount of mold being found in the District Court area.
The courthouse will be closed from Monday through Friday and is scheduled to reopen for business on May 12, according to a press release from Webbs office. Most offices will be relocated to the Jake Lopez Community Center at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds.
The remediation cost is not to exceed $175,000, according to Webb, who said the money will come from reserve general funds.
The scope of the cleaning will include replacing ceiling tiles, steam cleaning carpets and sanitizing all the flat surfaces in the courthouse, according to Ninth Judicial District Judge Donna Mowrer.
Webb said the molds source has yet to be discovered, but said a variety of factors, such as high wind, could have played a role.
Webb said an environmental consultant will test the facility again to make sure the building is safe before reopening it.
