HINSDALE Hinsdale Middle School has faced its share of scrutiny recently regarding facility issues that included mold remediation and major roof repairs.
At the April 28 District 181 Board of Education meeting, Hinsdale Middle School teacher Kelly Sledz, who is also representing teachers on the districts facilities committee, presented a survey to the board containing feedback from staff and administrators on an array of facility topics.
The survey asked participants to state how much they agreed or disagreed with each question or statement.
1. To what extent do you feel your building has site or facility issues?
Results: 100 percent of responders found issues with Hinsdale Middle School facilities.
By comparison, 4 percent of Clarendon Hills Middle School staff felt its school had significant or very significant issues, while 100 percent of the Hinsdale Middle School staff felt there were significant or very significant issues at the school.
2. Student learning is enhanced by the school
Results: 80 percent of those surveyed either disagreed or strongly disagreed with that statement.
Rather than being able to do the things we know are best for kids, we are often times driven by the limited space we have to do it in, Sledz said while reading some of the comments staff submitted with the survey statement.
Other responses from faculty stated that the school has insufficient number of classrooms, narrow halls and classroom space surrounded by noisy cafeteria, according to Sledz.

CORAOPOLIS -- Coraopolis Police Chief Alan DeRusso said Wednesday that the boroughs employees are at risk after the discovery of high mold and bacteria levels in the municipalitys Fifth Avenue offices.
A study performed by Bactronix Corp. of Moon Township revealed spore counts 10 times higher than safe, normal levels, DeRusso said.
Its been ignored for far too long, and we have to breathe that stuff every day, he said of his fellow officers and borough employees.
Borough Council took steps toward rectifying the issue Wednesday by approving a $7,350 agreement with Bactronix for mold remediation.
Council members expressed uncertainty, though, about how long the remediation work would yield low spore counts, considering the municipal buildings age and ongoing deterioration.
Bactronix officials are expected to address all of the councils questions in the next few weeks.
The three-story building, constructed in 1929 and renovated in 1979, houses the police station -- including cells for short-term prisoners -- the boroughs administrative offices and the volunteer fire departments main station. DeRusso said moisture has penetrated the walls through the years, leading to sagging floors, chipped paint and mold growing in the walls.
DeRusso, who has been with the department for more than 25 years, said hes concerned about his health and the well-being of his fellow employees.
Ive personally spent time in the hospital for upper-respiratory problems, he said, and people getting sick is a regular occurrence around here.
Borough Manager Ray McCutcheon thanked the council for approving the remediation.

Extensive disaster-related damages may result in public facilities becoming inundated or exposed to wet and humid weather conditions for extended periods of time. The limited availability of repair and restoration contractors may delay clean-up activities. In addition, the disruption of electrical power can inhibit the use of water extraction, pumping and drying electric equipment. As such, the damaged structures and their contents may remain waterlogged until power is restored and remediation can begin. Such water saturation may cause growth and propagation of mold on structures and interior contents, causing health-related problems and increasing the cost of repairs. The following guidance is provided to assist Public Assistance staff and applicants (entities that meet the requirements of 44 CFR 206.222 - State, local governments, Indian tribes or authorized tribal organizations, and certain private non-profits) with the remediation and/or repair of their damaged facilities.
The cost of mold sampling, both pre-and post-remediation, may be eligible for reimbursement, provided there is evidence prior to remediation to indicate the existence of disaster-related mold.
The cost of mold sampling which reveals no presence of disaster-related mold is not eligible for reimbursement.
Costs to perform eligible remediation - either through force account or a contractor - may be eligible for reimbursement. Contractor costs are subject to the contract procurement requirements in 44 CFR 13.36.
The following remediation activities may be eligible under Category B:
Wet vacuuming, damp wiping or HEPA vacuuming of the interior space.
Removal of contaminated gypsum board, plaster (or similar wall finishes), carpet or floor finishes, and ceilings or permanent light fixtures.
Cleaning of contaminated heating and ventilation (including ductwork), plumbing, and air conditioning systems, or other mechanical equipment.
If an applicant fails to take reasonable measures to prevent the spread of mold contamination to a facility, the rehabilitation and repair of the additional contaminated area will not be eligible for federal assistance
If an applicant can document and justify why reasonable measures were not taken to prevent further contamination to a facility from mold, or why reasonable measures taken were insufficient to prevent further damage, remediation activities may be eligible for reimbursement. Examples of extenuating circumstances may include:
