BC Hydro considers replacing thousands of old streetlights with brighter, more energy-efficient LEDs – CBC.ca - February 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

BC Hydro may begin installing thousands of light emitting diode (LED) street lights across the province this summer.

The utility currently owns and maintains approximately 95,000 streetlights around the province, roughly 30 per cent of all streetlights in British Columbia. Most of the ones attached to BC Hydro's electricity poles are high pressure sodium (HPS) lights.

LED lights are known to last longer, are brighter and render colours significantly better than HPS lights.

The transition to the energy-saving technology could lead to cost savings of 50 to 70 per cent for the smaller communities who rely on the utility's public lighting, according to the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM).

A resolution supported by the UBCM last year encouraged the provincial government to require BC Hydro to quickly replace streetlights with LEDsor provide smaller municipalities who depend on them with the financial resources to continue paying for BC Hydro's energy "inefficient" fleet of streetlights.

According to the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, the utility's board of directors will make a decision on the plan later this month. If approved, the transition to LED would start this summer with an expected timeline of two to three years. Communities will be given advance notice for when the work will take place.

The ministry said details of new street lighting rates are not yet known.BC Hydro still has to propose newrates to the B.C. utilities commission for approval.

When reached for comment, BC Hydro said it could provide no details on the estimatedcost ahead of the board's decision.

For years, environmental advocacy groups have pushed governments to adopt LEDs.

And in recent years, several Metro Vancouver municipalities have begun making the switch.

Burnaby, which completely converted to LED last spring, saidstreetlight consumption dropped by about 60 per cent.

Meanwhile, Richmond and Surrey have both replaced a significant number of older streetlights with the more efficient alternative.

Vancouver also plans to convert all streetlights to LED. This past December, 17 locations in the city already featured the bright lights, resulting in a 40 per cent reduction in collisions at those sites, according to city hall.

In 2015, the Climate Group, a non-profit organization based in the United Kingdom, said indoor and outdoor lighting accounted for roughly 19 per cent of the world's electricity usage.

If all of the world's lights were replaced with LED, global electricity consumption for lighting would decline by more than 52 per cent, said the group that same year.

Forget the ‘man cave’, this is the year women are taking over garden sheds – Telegraph.co.uk - February 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A woman must have, Virginia Woolf famously wrote, money and a room of her own. But when youve got a house full of kids, you work from home or you share a flat, itcan be hard to carve out your ownspace. Which is why women areincreasingly colonising what has, traditionally, been an exclusively male domain: the garden shed.

There are a range of monikers, fromthe fairly awful-sounding she shed, which has nearly 110,000 posts on Instagram (a number which has grown20per cent in the past six months), to the no better fem-den. But whatever you call it, a shed that has been transformed with the feminine touch, rather than being just a space to store tools or shelter a chap listening to his wireless and avoiding chores, is growing in popularity.

The rise in the number of women wanting to transform their sheds is certainly gaining interest and popularity, with platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram providing inspiration, says Marcus Eyles, horticultural director atDobbies Garden Centres.

More and more, we are seeing that the garden is being considered a fifth room and an extension of our living space, and so more thought and planning is going into designs, styling and accessories.

Kirsty Wark, the broadcaster and author, is among those who retire to hershed (although she describes it as a summerhouse, really). She has posted a picture on Instagram of her shed at her Glasgow home, styled with a striped deck chair and a table lamp made from an upcycled Harris Gin bottle, calling it a luxury.

Its a quite separate space from the house, but beside it, she says. It affords a quite different view of the garden, which is endlessly fascinating. I read and write in there, and sit in the evening with a drink. Its the combination of a work and meditative and conversation place.

Similarly, Farrah Storr, the glamorous editor of Elle magazine, put a picture of her beautiful sky-blue painted shed at the bottom of her garden in Kent on social media, with its pair of matching bay trees flanking the door. It is, she says, a place she goes to write in peace.

Storr and Wark are not the only oneslooking for a touch of luxury atthe bottom of the garden. We are finding that more and more of our female clients are asking us to design cosy covered seating areas, summerhouses and she sheds that enable theirgarden to be used all year, says landscape gardener Victoria Wade.

If youre looking for an instant fix, there are a number of ready-made options on the market. Inspired by the idea of a space to read in peace, I spent a morning putting up a snug Dobbies shed with a lean-to for the logs for my non-existent wood burner.

But there are fancier options with more significant price tags. Take the National Trusts Crane Blickling sheds, inspired by outbuildings on Trust land in East Anglia and made by craftspeople in Norfolk, which start from 2,699, or the Gardener modular shed from The Posh Shed Company, from 970.

For something really spectacular, and when the budget is limitless, lookto Lady Anne Fields specially commissioned artists studio at her Grade II listed country home in southDevon. The wooden structure was designed by architects Mark Hoare and Charles Morris to blend into the estates landscape.

How you incorporate your shed into the garden matters, as you might be looking at it every day from the kitchen window. Some buildings are best recessive and tucked away, background buildings, whereas others might want to be focal and centre of attention, Hoare explains.

Its important to think about how it will be used, and where a new structure should sit in terms ofahierarchy of other buildings inthegarden landscape. Materialswhich weather and mellow over time will naturally settle into a garden setting and so are usually safe bets.

Almost any structure can be made tolook more polished with a lick of paint. You can be a little more creative in colours and styles than you may be in the main house, Eyles advises.

In an attempt to make my shedlookmore like Derek Jarmans Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent, Ive painted it black (I recommend Sandtex 10-year exterior paint, which only needs one coat).

One easy hack that designers use as a flourish is to paint the window frames and doors a contrasting colour to the body of the shed in tonal shades. Try shades such as Acorn and Windmill Lane exterior paints from Little Greene, two muted and complementary shades of green.

Hoare adds that encouraging plants to climb over buildings also helps to soften their impact and blur the lines between hard and soft. Wark strung up outdoor lights around her roof edge, and they are intertwined with clematis.

Slapping some paint on inside, too, helps a shed feel like a retreat rather than just a storage space; Wark painted the walls and ceiling of hers with some leftover white paint from an interiors project, so I followed suit.

Depending on the sheds intended function, youll need furniture: either a big table or work bench for creative endeavours or comfy chairs for relaxing and reading.

Wark says she added in two striped steamer chairs I brought home from our place in Mallorca, and installed an oil radiator that looks quite vintage (although its actually from B&Q). To cover the floor, Wark fitted a piece of artificial turf. Alternatively, you can try an outdoor rug; look for ones made from recycled plastic bottles, such as from Weaver Green.

Running electricity from your house to your shed can be quite easy, Ive found, but armoured cabling is key. This means you can play around with lighting: a table lamp will set a cosy tone. If you can fit a log-burning stove in your shed, youll barely need to leave. The British company Vesta Stoves has a wood burner called the Log Cabin Stove designed for just such a small space, for 1,100.

Once the feminine atmosphere is set, it might be time to let the men back in to show them what theyre missing out on. Wark says that her husband, Alan is welcome to join her for conversations, as well as to smoke the odd cigar. But I think I might keep mine to myself.

Philips Hue Smart Plug review: Just the basics, except for the price tag – TechHive - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

As a smart home pioneer, Signifys Philips Hue brand is well known for its smart light bulbs, switches, sensors, and even complete indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, most of which rely on its $60 Zigbee-to-Wi-Fi bridge. More recently the company has added a new line of devices that give you the option of bridge-free control, via Bluetooth. Thats where the Philips Hue Smart Plug fits into the mix.

The Philips Hue Smart Plug looks nearly identical to many other commonly available smart plugs, its a wide, squat, single-outlet device that fits neatly into a single socket on your wall outlet. Its just barely wider than the wall plate, and its short enough that it doesnt block the second socket from being used.

If youre not planning to make a deeper investment into the Hue ecosystem, you can save the $60 youd spend on the bridge and control this smart plug with just your smartphone or tablet, using Bluetooth. But this approach limits you to just 10 Bluetooth-compatible Hue devices of any type.

The Philips Hue Smart Plug is anonymous looking apart for a sticker on top indicating its maximum supported wattage.

If your smart lighting needs are that simple, there are many, many less-expensive ways to meet them. Our top pick in this category, Levitons Decora DW15P, costs about $25 and connects to your Wi-Fi networkno bridge required. The same goes for our runner-up pick, the Currant WiFi Smart Outlet, which costs the same as this Hue device, but can control two devices independently (and theres aBluetooth version of the Currant that costs $25).

Besides, the Philips Hue Smart Plug gets its real smarts from its interaction with the Hue Bridge, which connects your Hue devices to your Wi-Fi network. With the Bridge (and only with the Bridge) you can control multiple devices in your home at once, use Alexa and Google Assistant. Using the Bridge is also the only way that you control devices when youre out of the house.

Heres the catch, though: The Hue mobile app has been designed and refined exclusively to control lights, and its overall approach doesnt always translate perfectly to the smart plugs. The Philips Hue system has a robust set of routines built in: You can have lights turn on or off automatically when you wake up or go to sleep, control bulbs to turn on when you come home, and set up timers and schedules. The Hue app doesnt always know what to do with the plug, though, and users might be confused that Hues catch-all group is still all lights, not all devices.

I eventually figured out the necessary syntax to get the Hue app working most of the time with the Smart Plug, but timers that instruct devices to blink lights never worked (even if you have a lamp plugged into it).

Timers can be finicky to configure properly.

The Hue Smart Plug is also short on features such as energy monitoring or a usage history log. As well, setting up geofencing so you can control the plug automatically when you come and go requires jumping through numerous hoops on the Hue website (outside of the app), although after I got it working, this ended up working fine in my testing.

And now for the kicker: With a list price of $40, you will have trouble finding a more expensive, less capable smart plug on the marketand thats not even considering the price of the Hue Bridge. If youre already a devotee to the Hue ecosystem, you probably already have a bridge, and the Hue Smart Plugs price tag might not even phase you.

If you do object to the pricing, and you have a smart speaker (like an Amazon Echo or Google Home), that device can be an equalizereffectively erasing the boundaries between brands and technologies. You will, however, need to deal with disparate apps, at least during set up. And if youre just getting started on your smart home journey youll find plenty of more capable and more affordable options on the market.

In Alaska, dark winters are a constant. That’s all the more reason to string lights. – Anchorage Daily News - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Global warming is resulting in lots of variables here in Alaska, but there is one constant: Our days will always get really short during the winter months. Lately, I find myself wondering what Alaskans will do as winters get warmer. It wont be warm enough to garden (at least for a while) of course, but what happens when we cant get on our skis, ice skates, sleds and snowmachines? What do we do with darkness when there is no snow?

There is only one answer: We go to lights. Anchorage did it once before back in the late 70s and early 80s. We loaded trees and shrubbery with strings of those tiny, white lights you still see around. In fact, the story goes we bought more strings of those lights than any other place on earth. I believe it.

The program ran into politics with rival mayors, but I say politics be damned. Today there are all manner of string lights that are very different from those we Anchorage old-timers put up during that City of Lights campaign. After all, that was more than a quarter century ago. There were no cellphones, few computers and LED technology was just coming into its own.

If you have not visited a hardware store or box store lighting department in a while, do check some out. You will still find the 2-foot rolls of string lights, but there are much more. How about a string of icicles or even meteors? No electricity? There are battery-powered strings of light. Others are solar powered.

There are all manner of colored LEDs, of course. And some of these are put inside all sorts of objects ranging from those with holiday themes like reindeer and Santas, to more personal themes such as hearts, hot peppers and worse. Some of these lights come on net arrays for some pretty impressive, but easy to construct, backyard displays.

You can now buy 150-foot rolls LED rope light, with the lights inside a plastic tube (which makes them so easy to put up and, more important, take down and store). And, if you dont want to get into the hanging lights thing, you can now buy gadgets that project points of light onto your plants or house, trees and lawn.

To get an idea of what I mean as to the new kinds of lights, you should head to the internet. Check out string lights and outdoor lights. There is no reason to buy online as anything you could possibly use is for sale right here, locally. Oh, and, we have the darkness for free.

It is important to be safe when stringing lights as you are dealing with electricity (and perhaps a ladder). No sense harming yourself. It is just as critical that lights dont harm the plants used to support them. This starts with how they are attached. They have be secure enough so they dont rub against bark, yet not so tight as to harm the limbs. Moreover, you really must give pre-hanging consideration to how you are going remove them so the plant doesnt get damaged as it thickens during spring and summer growth.

Finally, why not check out the lighting displays at the Alaska Botanical Garden anytime from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays, Nov. 30, through Jan. 11 (with the exception of Dec. 25. and Jan. 1). There, you will not only find wonderful light displays, but live music, bonfires, vendors, model trains and a warm drink in an ABG mug (or bring your own). Welcome to global warming, it is our turn now. Check out the schedule of special events at alaskabg.org.

    Jeffs Alaska garden calendar

Christmas trees: They are for sale. They must be in water, especially if you are buying early.

Poinsettias: They are back. Make sure you dont put yours where there is a draft as this will cause them to drop leaves. Soil should be slightly moist

Free mid-winter lunchtime garden talks: The Alaska Botanical Garden is putting on a week of garden talks Dec. 16-20. All talks start at 12:30 p.m. and are held at the botanical gardens greenhouse. Oh, bring your lunch. Go to alaskabg.org for topics.

Jeff thinks autoflowering cannabis is the next tomato: Check out his new book DIY Autoflowering Cannabis on Amazon.

Holiday Lighting Safety Tips Will Save Money And Add Sparkle – Nashua, NH Patch - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANCHESTER, NH Now that Thanksgiving is over, more and more homes and neighborhoods across the Granite State will begin to look festive with Christmas and other holiday lighting displays, both in and outside of home. Eversource, the state's largest utility company, is reminding customers that there are ways consumers can save money, conserve energy and ensure a safe home while also celebrating the twinkles and sparkles of the holidays. Just utilizing one of these tips, like swapping out traditional incandescent lights with more efficient LED lights, can save a lot of money and energy.

"Before putting up holiday decorations, it's important to inspect them to ensure they're not broken or damaged check lighted displays for cracked sockets, frayed wires or loose connections," said Ken Bogler, the vice president of safety at Eversource. "When decorating outside, we remind people to work from a stable surface and to always be aware of any power lines or other hazards that might be nearby."

LED lights use about 80 percent less energy than conventional bulbs. They often last longer, are brighter, and stay cooler.

Also, never run an extension cord under a rug or coil them tightly this can cause them to overheat. A programmable timer will ensure that lights aren't left on accidentally. When displaying lights outside, keep them off the ground water and electricity do not mix. Also, check the labels to ensure that lights for indoor use only are not displayed outside.

Other tips include: Checking lights for dampness and temperature-proof; check extension cords for wear and tear, and plug outdoor lights and decorations into GFCI outlets; use advanced power strips where possible for all holiday lighting to eliminate standby energy loss; turn off room lights when the tree is lit to save energy while creating a festive atmosphere.
