Wattstopper Outdoor Sensors to Support Philips Lighting SR Platform – Audio Visual News Network - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Legrand North and Central America has announced the development of new Wattstopper FDP-300 Series sensors. The sensors, which will launch under Legrands Eliot program, will be the first in the market to add occupancy detection to a connected outdoor fixture. Specifically engineered for OEM use, these digital sensors will offer multi-level control based on motion and/or daylight contribution and designed to share information to and from peripheral devices, including wireless nodes and digital LED drivers such as Philips Xitanium SR drivers. Legrand is part of Philips Lighting SR (System Ready) Certified Program and the FDP-300 Series sensors will be the first products being developed as part of this partnership.

Outdoor lighting systems are experiencing a market shift from analog to digital sensors and network controlled solutions. This shift to connected lighting and intelligent controls is driven by emerging technologies such as LEDs and initiatives like the Internet of Things (IoT). These sensors enable connected intelligent lighting for outdoor spaces and allow substantial energy and maintenance cost savings.

As part of an outdoor lighting solution, FDP-300 Series sensors will help facility engineers and city managers to monitor, control, commission, and diagnose outdoor lighting while maximizing safety and security. Ideal for street lighting applications, commercial site lighting, and parking lots in commercial and city spaces, the sensors will feature robust SR functionality.

The FDP-300 Series will come in multiple mounting options to fit with a variety of luminaires. They are IP66 and IK08 rated for the highest protection against water, dust, and other non-corrosive material, as well as against external mechanical impacts, and are code compliant with latest ASHRAE 90.1/ IECC and California Title 24 outdoor lighting control requirements.

    Legrand Eliot Program

The Wattstopper FDP-300 Series digital fixture integrated outdoor sensors tie to the larger context of Legrands Eliot (Electricity + IoT) program. Eliot is a global Legrand IoT program that aims to advance connectivity and intelligence in the built environment, mobilize Legrands capabilities around the world, and speed development of Legrand connected devices wherever the Internet of Things can enhance value for all users.

The LuminAid inflatable lantern Is the perfect light for outdoor adventures – Popular Science - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Even regular footpaths can become dangerous when the sun goes down. With this in mind, lighting is pretty important for any outdoor adventure. The LuminAid PackLite Inflatable Lantern is perfect for camping trips and mountaineering alike. It charges via USB or solar power, and the inflatable design simply shrugs off the rain. You can grab one now for $19.99 at the Popular Science Shop.

The great outdoors can be very unforgiving on the unprepared. Besides, it's nice being able to see your way around the campsite. You can use the LuminAid PackLite to light the way, or inflate the lantern for ambient lighting. There are five lighting modes to toggle through, and the lantern kicks out an impressive 75 lumens.

When you're on the move, the LuminAid folds pretty flat so you can hang it on your backpack or tent via the adjustable strap. This allows the built-in solar panel to recharge the battery, even in overcast conditions. On a full charge, the battery lasts for 24 hours of illumination.

Get the LuminAid now for $19.99, or upgrade to the multi-color version for $24.99.

Zoning approves Pettibone renovations – Danbury News Times - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW MILFORD The Zoning Board has unanimously approved Mayor David Gronbachs request for a special permit to convert the old John Pettibone School into a community center.

The town, as an applicant, stepped up, Zoning Vice Chair Sharon Ward said at Tuesdays meeting. They met all the regulations, so we approved it.

At previous meetings, the board required the town to add lighting in the parking lot and add a drop-off area near Route 7, which Pettibone fronts, as conditions of its approval.

After concerns about pedestrian safety on the congested road arose during earlier public hearings, the board also requested that the town build sidewalks along the entirety of Pettibones Route 7 frontage within the next five years.

For now, however, the board required only the installation of a small walkway from a Route 7 bus stop to a paved waiting area and to the community center for the safety of HARTransit bus riders visiting Pettibone.

Zoning commissioners also asked the town to request that HARTransit buses drop off and pick up riders at the school itself.

Sidewalks along the Route 7 are not required by zoning regulations, Ward said, but the board strongly urges all Route 7 applicants to install them for pedestrian safety.

The town asked for five years to complete the project, so it can obtain grant money for the sidewalk, Ward added.

The town has been working for months to renovate the building, and town agencies including the Parks and Recreation and Social Services departments, along with the town Youth Agency, are expected to move in.

With the Zoning Boards earlier outdoor-lighting request accounted for, all renovations will cost the town $380,000, which Gronbach has pulled from the Waste Management Fund.

Olympic Landscape and Irrigation Hits a High Note – The Suburban Times - July 8, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Puyallup, WA For 40 years Olympic Landscape and Irrigation has been dedicated to helping its customers transform their yards and gardens into stunningly beautiful outdoor spaces. Founder and owner Neil Hedman states, The success we enjoy is due in large part to our design staff and installers. Our designers are very gifted in blending landscape architecture with the customers desires. Our installers are craftsmen in their trade, bringing the design and material together to produce terrific yards. I am amazed when I go to the sites and see what they have accomplished. Our people truly love what they do.

Fresh out of college with a degree in Botany, Hedman started with a dream in 1977 of creating a sustainable landscaping business after working for another landscaping company. From the early days of three guys and a truck with walkie-talkies, Olympic Landscape and Irrigation has grown to 30 employees with sophisticated computer-based design services and state-of-the-art products.

Landing the contract for landscaping at the Tacoma Dome was an early success for the company that has gone on to complete landscaping design projects for hundreds of customers throughout the South Puget Sound.

Through sluggish economies and big changes in technology, Hedman says he has learned a lot about how to run a successful business. Creating a great workplace culture is the best way to ensure longevity, creativity, excitement, and quality. For me, its a lot like being an excellent conductor. You put together a great team who are excellent at their individual instruments, you know the piece you want to be played and have a good idea how to get there. Throw in a little fun and love into the mix, and you are sure to hit a high note, notes Hedman. We are thankful for all of our customers who have become part of our history. They have been a pleasure to work with and we have developed many good friends over the years. Were looking forward to continuing this adventure into the future, states Hedman.

Olympic Landscape and Irrigation Co. has served the Puget Sound area since 1977. Located in Puyallup, Washington, our family-owned company provides customers with landscape design and construction, sprinkler and outdoor lighting service, and backflow assembly testing. June bugs out in swarming numbers, Oklahomans cannot ignore them – kfor.com - July 8, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

OKLAHOMA CITY-Oklahomans are fighting what you might call a bug battle, or even an all out war. June bugs are showing up in droves.

Reports of swarming June bugs showing up at night anywhere there's a light are popping up all over social media, but they're hard to ignore in real life.

"At nighttime I'll open my window and then they'll just be flying in," said Somara Roseberry, a city resident."They're loud and their feet are super sticky to my skin, and that just freaks me out," she said.

For some people, it's more than just a nuisance.

"We went to Whataburger the other day and there were so many June bugs flying around," said Jacob Mattinson, out with his girlfriend,Stephanie Hunt,"and that's her ultimate fear, June bugs. So of course when she's handing money to the guy, she has to keep the window rolled up as much as possible."

OSU Extension Educator Ray Ridlen said most of the beetles are reaching the end of their two-year life cycle.

"The adults don't have much of an exciting life and so if you have outdoor lighting, they're going to be attracted to the light," Ridlen said.

He said they come out at night to breed before they die.

"That street lamp is like a singles bar for the June bar," he said.

Ridlenwarns that people should start laying down curative grub control mid-August to September.

The females lay their eggs in the lawn, about 50 eggs at a time. Those will then hatch, eat up the lawn, and return topermeate the airin a couple years.

Creating an easy, breezy screened porch with a classic, curated look – Washington Post - July 8, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

    THE CHALLENGE

Jill and Jeff Martinez recently added a 20-by-10-foot screened porch to their Silver Spring Tudor. They would like a dining area that can seat six (ideally with a wrought-iron table like the one Jill had when she was a child), as well as a place to relax. They need furniture that can stand up to the outdoors and want a traditional look that suits the style of the 84-year-old home. They prefer blues, greens and neutrals and are also looking for a color to repaint the siding.

    THE PROPOSED SOLUTION

Designer Susan Jamieson uses a blend of materials and finishes to give the porch a vintage look that doesnt seem overly decorated. The result is that pieces seem like they were collected over time. She adds sconces and outdoor lamps to provide light for reading and keeps the ceiling fan to allow for overhead lighting and air circulation on warm days.

    JAMIESONS SUGGESTIONS

Use a variety ofseating options to maximize space.Brighten the space by painting thesiding a pale neutral, such as Comfort Gray by Sherwin-Williams. Go lighter for the trim, with Big Chill from Sherwin-Williams.Add color with a bold blue door, such as Turkish Tile from Sherwin-Williams.For a more intimate feeling, use outdoor table lamps instead of overhead lighting.Bring the outdoors into thespace with lotsof plants. Whimsical bee-themed doormats (not shown) are a nod to the owners beehive.

Jamieson, with Bridget Beari Designs (804-321-4747, bridgetbeari designs.com), is based in Richmond.

Outdoor Sconces | Outdoor Wall Sconces | ATG Stores - October 23, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

When thinking about adding outdoor lighting to their home, many people go straight to the simple and utilitarian floodlight. However, the outdoor wall sconce is a more interesting alternative which can light your porch, breezeway, or driveway in style, and define the feel of your dcor before anyone even enters your home.

One of the keys to choosing the right sconce for your house is knowing which type of lighting will best accent the space. Exterior wall sconces can look great with transparent glass, which offers the brightest option, but can frequently be overwhelming because there may be too much glare. Translucent outdoor wall sconces are a popular option that tones down the brightness of transparent glass, while retaining outdoor visibility with comparable light levels. These can be an excellent choice, especially for archways and more intimate outdoor spaces. Alternately, opaque glass can offer a warm, friendly glow that makes a home look welcoming. The type of light bulb you choose will also have a large impact on the brightness and tone of light emanating from your wall sconce, so it is worth looking at which type of bulb the sconce uses.

In addition to considering the type of lighting that youre looking for, there are also many different design styles of sconces to look at. ATGStores.com carries outdoor sconces in chrome, antique brass, nickel, copper, and painted finishes, among others, to complement any exterior. And, you can add the perfect touch with styles that range from antiqued and rustic metals and rich hued craftsman lamps, to traditional carriage-house lanterns or sleek contemporary fixtures. But, no matter what style or type of lighting youre searching for, ATGStores.com has the perfect outdoor sconce for you. We offer over 5,000 styles of units, all with free delivery, so regardless of how many outdoor sconces you need, you never have to worry about exorbitant shipping costs.
