Cree LED lighting arrives at Munich Airport - January 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LED lighting solutions developer Cree, Durham, NC, USA, is supplying its LED technology to power the apron and exterior lighting systems of Munich Airport, Germany (FMG), one of Europes largest international hubs, serving 38 million passengers per year.

Cree collaborated with Ewo, Cortaccia, Italy, a manufacturer of lighting systems designed for public areas, whose F32 flood lights are replacing high-pressure sodium lamps in Munich Airports high-mast systems. The F32 was designed to integrate into the existing apron lighting at Munich Airport, and each light is illuminated by up to 288 Cree XLamp XT-E LEDs.

Munich Airport had sought out LED technology to reduce the operating cost of its more than 13,000 outdoor lights. In addition to energy savings, the airport has set itself the goal of maintaining CO2 emissions at their 2005 level irrespective of future traffic growth.

The airport expects the new flood lights featuring Cree LEDs to consume at least 50 percent less energy than the previously-installed high-pressure sodium lamps, which would result in yearly electricity savings of 122,000 kilowatt-hours and approximately 70 tons of CO2 on completion of phase one of the lighting overhaul.

Through longer-term replacement of its 3,000 apron floodlights and 10,200 exterior lights, the airport expects to save more than 5,000 tons of CO2 annually. Cree says that by their use of energy- and cost-efficient LED technology, the brilliant white light emitted by the F32 floodlight gives a higher color rendering value to more accurately display colors and provide enhanced visibility compared to the old lamps.

Cree technology is providing lighting for more than just the apron: all implemented floodlights can be universally equipped with a variety of optical lenses and the Ewo Light Management System for additional flexibility, allowing the technology to be adapted to various different situations. One version has been designed especially for airport street lighting to ensure that surrounding roadways are also optimally lit.

Commercial Lighting! Outdoor Commercial Lights Up To 60% Off - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Outdoor and warehouse industrial &commercial lighting should be durable, long-lasting and efficient. While the purpose of commercial lighting tends to be more utilitarian than aesthetic, it is nonetheless important to choose the type of bulb that is appropriate to your task. Even with commercial warehouse lighting applications, it is often important for handlers and receivers to inspect the products that enter and leave the warehouse. If color trueness is an important consideration, for example, then metal halide would be a good choice due to its ability to render colors as they would appear in daylight. If, on the other hand, you are exploring a commercial outdoor lighting application where sheer efficiency is most important, you might consider a high pressure sodium bulb. While the light tends to be orange gold in color, high pressure sodium bulbs tend to be more efficient and therefore longer lasting than metal halide. No matter what the application, the fixtures and bulbs that are most appropriate to your needs are certain to be found among our exhaustive selection. We offer both high bay and low bay commercial lighting fixtures, which are designed to provide optimal luminosity for different sized warehouses or other commercial buildings. High bay lamps, by emitting a concentrated light with minimal dispersion, are best suited to high ceilings; whereas low bay lamps are better suited to low ceilings and smaller spaces. These are available in 16 or 22 sized options. Our acrylic commercial warehouse lighting fixtures are installed with coated metal halide lamps, which are designed to reduce glare and increase light distribution. Fitted with highly efficient refractors, these fixtures only emit 10-20% up light. Hook, cord and twist lock plug mounting options are available, as well as sliding mounting plate assemblies which allow for balancing of the fixture as well as easy access to the wiring chamber. Many of these commercial lighting products are also available in aluminum housing options, which are ideal for industrial lighting applications. These commercial lighting fixtures are also available with pulse light option, which includes a dedicated ballast and igniter, and eliminates the need for the starting probe and bi-metal switch in the lamp. Pulse start commercial lighting fixtures offer a longer lamp life, improved lamp-to-lamp color consistency, faster warm-up time, faster re-strike time, and colder starting temperatures

Parking Lot Lighting For soffits, carports, canopies, hallways, utility rooms, gymnasiums, outdoor areas, or other areas where security is a concern, we offerVandalproof commercial lighting fixtures available in die cast aluminum housing with super-tough refractor lens. Available in high, medium or low-wattage options, these virtually unbreakable fixtures come housed in either die cast aluminum or heavy gauge steel, and a polycarbonate refractor lens. You may also choose from fluorescent, high pressure sodium, or metal halide lamp options. For information on Commercial Outdoor Furniture, Park Benches & Park Grills. Global outdoor LED lighting market to reach $1.9B by 2017 - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A report from Strategies Unlimited has projected that the global outdoor LED lighting market will reach $1.9 billion by 2017. The report says the demand for LED outdoor lighting grew in 2012, with nearly two million LED luminaires installed in tunnels and roadways. The report also predicts that LED street light installations will increase by 400 per cent in the next five years, although revenue growth will be less substantial owing to the saturated market driving prices downward.

Governments and regulatory agencies worldwide encouraged the implementation of LED lighting in 2012 in various ways, including: ARRA funding in the U.S., the 12th 5 year plan in China, and the European 20/20/20 initiative. Developed countries, as well as emerging economies, installed LED street lights on a large scale.

Strategies Unlimited Director of LED & Lighting Research Philip Smallwood said: "Unit shipments of LED street lights are forecasted to have a CAGR of 31 per cent, while revenues are forecasted to only grow 16 per cent from 2012-2017 as downward pressure on prices continue due to competition. In North America and Europe alone, prices are predicted to decrease on average -20 per cent and -15 per cent, respectively."

After a disastrous response to the multiple product failures plaguing the initial installation of LED street lights in 2009, China has mandated product quality requirements on all manufacturers bidding for LED street light installations. This, coupled with the government's strong push for decreased energy usage, should help the country attain its goal of reducing energy consumption and carbon intensity by 16 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively.

In the U.S., price wars on LED street lights attracted a lot of attention in the past year. One headliner was Cree's $99 residential LED street lamp. Though prices have been coming down, product quality has not been compromised as the DOE has on-going efforts to implement stringent product quality requirements. The U.S. has a market that can sustain declining prices along with technological advancements in SSL outdoor lighting. Strategies Unlimited analyst Shonika Vijay, said: "North America (which is predominately the U.S.) will show aggressive growth of 44 per cent in LED street light units in year 2012 through 2017."

News Analysis: Dark skies helps seal 7-0 vote in favor of Flagstaff regional plan - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Adding back language on dark skies, downtown parking and pedestrians preceded the Flagstaff City Councils unanimous approval Tuesday of the Flagstaff Regional Plan 2030.

The first issues were concerns by Paul Shankland, the director of the U.S. Naval Observatory, and Jeff Hall, the director of the Lowell Observatory, about language that appeared to water down the citys dark skies ordinance.

During its Dec. 17 meeting, council removed language from the plan that would restrict economic activity centers in any area designated as Lighting Zone 1 and enforce dark sky ordinances.

Lighting Zone 1 areas are located near the observatories have the citys strictest regulations on outdoor lighting.

Shankland, Hall and Chris Luginbuhl, also from the U.S. Naval Observatory, explained that removing the language might allow multiple development in the Zone 1 areas with outdoor lighting that could have a cumulative effect on degrading visibility for the observatories.

Mayor Jerry Nabours pointed out that the regional plan was not changing the citys dark sky ordinance and development in those areas would still have to follow the lighting regulations. The language was removed because the city didnt want to prohibit all development in the area, he said, and because it made it sound like the city wasnt enforcing its dark sky ordinance.

Councilwoman Celia Barotz pointed out that the lighting code didnt deal with land use. Were not concerned about the overall intent of the plan but the subtle impact of removing the language, Shankland said.

Luginbuhl described the citys dark sky philosophy as a three-legged stool made up of land use regulations, the lighting code and enforcement measures.

A shopping center could follow all of the lighting code regulations, but its proximity to an observatory could degrade visibility around the observatory, he said. Another possible problem would be multiple shopping centers or subdevelopments being approved for an area, all in compliance with the lighting code, but the cumulative effect of their outdoor night lighting could also degrade the skies.

It might seem superficial, but this is a world-leading lighting code and having it in the plan demonstrates the citys specific intentions, Hall said.
