A report from Strategies Unlimited has projected that the global outdoor LED lighting market will reach $1.9 billion by 2017. The report says the demand for LED outdoor lighting grew in 2012, with nearly two million LED luminaires installed in tunnels and roadways. The report also predicts that LED street light installations will increase by 400 per cent in the next five years, although revenue growth will be less substantial owing to the saturated market driving prices downward.
Governments and regulatory agencies worldwide encouraged the implementation of LED lighting in 2012 in various ways, including: ARRA funding in the U.S., the 12th 5 year plan in China, and the European 20/20/20 initiative. Developed countries, as well as emerging economies, installed LED street lights on a large scale.
Strategies Unlimited Director of LED & Lighting Research Philip Smallwood said: "Unit shipments of LED street lights are forecasted to have a CAGR of 31 per cent, while revenues are forecasted to only grow 16 per cent from 2012-2017 as downward pressure on prices continue due to competition. In North America and Europe alone, prices are predicted to decrease on average -20 per cent and -15 per cent, respectively."
After a disastrous response to the multiple product failures plaguing the initial installation of LED street lights in 2009, China has mandated product quality requirements on all manufacturers bidding for LED street light installations. This, coupled with the government's strong push for decreased energy usage, should help the country attain its goal of reducing energy consumption and carbon intensity by 16 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively.
In the U.S., price wars on LED street lights attracted a lot of attention in the past year. One headliner was Cree's $99 residential LED street lamp. Though prices have been coming down, product quality has not been compromised as the DOE has on-going efforts to implement stringent product quality requirements. The U.S. has a market that can sustain declining prices along with technological advancements in SSL outdoor lighting. Strategies Unlimited analyst Shonika Vijay, said: "North America (which is predominately the U.S.) will show aggressive growth of 44 per cent in LED street light units in year 2012 through 2017."

Adding back language on dark skies, downtown parking and pedestrians preceded the Flagstaff City Councils unanimous approval Tuesday of the Flagstaff Regional Plan 2030.
The first issues were concerns by Paul Shankland, the director of the U.S. Naval Observatory, and Jeff Hall, the director of the Lowell Observatory, about language that appeared to water down the citys dark skies ordinance.
During its Dec. 17 meeting, council removed language from the plan that would restrict economic activity centers in any area designated as Lighting Zone 1 and enforce dark sky ordinances.
Lighting Zone 1 areas are located near the observatories have the citys strictest regulations on outdoor lighting.
Shankland, Hall and Chris Luginbuhl, also from the U.S. Naval Observatory, explained that removing the language might allow multiple development in the Zone 1 areas with outdoor lighting that could have a cumulative effect on degrading visibility for the observatories.
Mayor Jerry Nabours pointed out that the regional plan was not changing the citys dark sky ordinance and development in those areas would still have to follow the lighting regulations. The language was removed because the city didnt want to prohibit all development in the area, he said, and because it made it sound like the city wasnt enforcing its dark sky ordinance.
Councilwoman Celia Barotz pointed out that the lighting code didnt deal with land use. Were not concerned about the overall intent of the plan but the subtle impact of removing the language, Shankland said.
Luginbuhl described the citys dark sky philosophy as a three-legged stool made up of land use regulations, the lighting code and enforcement measures.
A shopping center could follow all of the lighting code regulations, but its proximity to an observatory could degrade visibility around the observatory, he said. Another possible problem would be multiple shopping centers or subdevelopments being approved for an area, all in compliance with the lighting code, but the cumulative effect of their outdoor night lighting could also degrade the skies.
It might seem superficial, but this is a world-leading lighting code and having it in the plan demonstrates the citys specific intentions, Hall said.

CLEVELAND - The President and CEO of PlayhouseSquare announced Monday that GE Lighting, a Cleveland-based company, will be a major sponsor of its neighborhood transformation project.
GEs lighting solutions are just what we need to create the beautiful, glowing ambiance that we want, while at the same time remaining conscious of energy efficiency, said Art J. Falco, Playhouse Square President and CEO.
The centerpiece of the PlayhouseSquare plan, the outdoor chandelier, will be named the GE Chandelier. GE Lighting is the exclusive sponsor of the structure, which will be suspended 40 feet above the intersection of Euclid Ave. and E. 14thSt. Its set to be unveiled at an event on May 2.
Falco also announced that the chandelier is in the running to be considered the worlds largest, permanent outdoor chandelier by Guinness World Records. The organization will make the determination once the chandelier is in place.
We really do think we have a great chance of having the largest chandelier in the world, added Falco.
GE lighting, which lights Severance Hall, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and Public Square, will help to light PlayhouseSquare with LED lighting.
What a nice opportunity to show our commitment to the city in innovation and work together to continue to make this city beautiful and more productive, MaryRose Sylvester, president and CEO of GE Lighting.
PlayhouseSquares neighborhood transformation project also includes retro signage, an update to the nearby Star Plaza and four welcoming gateways.

Midtown Sacramentos long-awaited outdoor beer garden has local beer lovers waiting a little longer.
Construction continues this week at Der Biergarten, located at 24th and K streets. On the beer gardens official Facebook page, co-owners Thomas Roth and Sean Derfield posted photos this past weekend of its near-completion with outdoor lighting, landscaping and bar now in place.
To all my friends, it has been a long year and a half since we started on our newest drinking/dining place here in Sacramento, posted Derfield, who also owns Old Sacramentos River City Saloon. We hope you come down and experience it. I look forward to some of our South City friends visiting and letting me buy you a beer this Spring/Summer.
Hopefully, Der Biergarten will be pouring long before that seasonal change. Expected to open Jan. 2, the beer garden now is looking at an opening sometime later this month. (Stay tuned.)
Billed as Sacramentos first outdoor beer garden, the establishment will feature two dozen beer hall-style tables and about 30 brews on tap. Der Biergarten also holds another distinction: Recycled industrial shipping containers were used for the construction.
