New lease on life for Youth Activity Center at 20 - March 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Ellen Joy Vahab was a single mother back in 1995 and couldn't find affordable after-school care for her three boys.

So she started the Youth Activity Center in West Boca, that has served 3,000 mostly low-income children all these years, often operating on a shoestring.

Now YAC, as it's called, has a new look and logo and even a staffer, and the website lists about 100 donors and in-kind services that have kept the center alive.

Many of them gathered for a nostalgic 20th anniversary party with a cake and lookbacks, but mostly forward. As board president Philip Bloom said, "We realized we needed to change."

"This place looks amazing," board member Tracy Kawa said when she walked in to find new donated furniture, art the children did on the walls and a new rug.

Catherine Riley, a Deerfield Beach commercial graphic artist, talked about how she came to do the bright yellow new mural outside.

"Ellen and I have mutual friends and I fell in love with the place," she said. "While I was painting, I could hear all the kids laughing and the birds singing outside."

Marc Jacobs, who owns Jacobs & Gallucci Inc. painting contractors, donated the paint, he said. Nick of Time Painting owner Nick Cloutier painted the interior.

A new supporter, Toby Chabon-Berger told Vahab she had 30 to 50 children's books dropped off.

"Everyone has done something with love for the center," Vahab said, crediting board member Marvin Zale with donating the sofas and chairs and computers.

Bus tunnel closed this weekend - March 11, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Bus tunnel closed this weekend

Hataitai bus tunnel will be closed this weekend, which means changes for some bus users.

It is the second of four planned closures to do repair and painting work related to the earthquake-strengthening project.

Most of the work on the tunnel is being done while the tunnel is in operation. However, to safely make some improvements to the portals and retaining walls, some weekend tunnel closures are required.

The tunnel will be closed this Saturday and Sunday (14 and 15 March), day and night, and also on the following weekends:

    2122 March

    1112 April

The No 2 and 91 (Airport Flyer) services will use a different route on these days travelling between Hataitai and the city via Kent and Cambridge terraces and the Mt Victoria road tunnel.

Temporary bus stops will operate in Taurima Street in Hataitai, replacing the usual ones on Waitoa Road adjacent to the tunnel and in the village.

People who normally get on or off buses in Elizabeth, Brougham or Pirie streets in Mt Victoria will need to use stops along Kent and Cambridge terraces instead.

14 contractors arrested in Costa Mesa sting operation - March 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Photo by Gustavo Castillo [Public domain], via Wikimedia CommonsAn undercover sting conductedby state, Orange County and Costa Mesa agencies resulted in the arrests of 14 contractors allegedly operating without a license, authorities said Wednesday.

The sting was conducted last week involving the Contractors State License Board, Orange County District Attorneys Office and Costa Mesa Building Division.

Undercover investigators bid on home improvement projects at a Costa Mesa residence. The projects were expected to cost more than $500 each. They included painting, building concrete driveways and walkways, flooring and tile work.

Contractors must have licenses if they bid more than $500 on a project.

Twelve of the 14 contractors did not disclose their unlicensed status, and two may face an additional charge of illegally using another contractors license, authorities said.

Not only do illegal contractors take opportunities away from legitimate business owners, they fundamentally deceive our residents and property owner, said Costa Mesa CEO Tom Hatch.

Building permits in Costa Mesa have increased 21 percent over the last three years, and there has been an influx of unlicensed contractors. The result has been an increase in complaints from residents who had contractors who did shoddy work or didnt finish their work, Hatch said.

Anyone planning on hiring a contractor should contract the Costa Mesa Building Division at (714) 754-5273 to see if contractors have city licenses.

Bridge painting accident clouds part of Boca Ciega Bay - March 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    TREASURE ISLAND --

A bridge painting accident in Treasure Island turned the pristine blue waters a cloudy white color Monday.

A resident took some pictures to show how much water was affected.

It just kept growing. It engulfed this whole side of houses and docks and it was probably about 30-feet out, said resident Donna Babcock.

Treasure Island City Manager Reid Silverboard said the bridge painters made a mistake but stopped short of calling it a spill.

Silverboard said the cloudy water was caused by bridge painters who cleaned out their buckets near a storm drain. He said as soon as they found about it they sent a tanker truck out to suck up the paint stained water.

The city also self-reported to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and FWC is also investigating the incident.

Babcock said she's upset that paint got into Boca Ciega Bay.

Paint doesnt belong in the water and Im sure the marine life probably agrees, she said.

There's no sign of the paint in the water now. Silverboard said the good news is the paint is not toxic.

Faced With A Crushing Deficit, Malloy Budget Officials Still Take Care Of Their Own - March 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Faced with a $100 million budget shortfall for the current fiscal year and a projected $1.3 billion deficit in the next, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's budget officials have proposed cutting millions in state spending on programs such as part-time jobs for needy students, school meals and college scholarships.

But the crisis didn't stop those same officials from approving Christmas-time raises of up to 12 percent for about 200 political appointees at an annual cost of $1.4 million and it hasn't prevented their going forward with $700,000 in interior improvements, such as new carpets and wall painting, at their own offices in Hartford.

Yes, contractors' bids are to be opened Wednesday for the renovations at the five-story headquarters of the Office of Policy and Management (OPM) the formal name for the governor's budget office at 450 Capitol Ave. The construction cost estimate is $702,000, after a design budget of $85,000, according to a spokesman for the Department of Administrative Services, which is handling the bidding process.

The way to cut $100 million in expenses from the state budget is piece by piece, a few million here and there for school meals and student loans, and a few million or hundred thousand somewhere else.

So why couldn't the state budget officials live with the same carpeting and faded wall paint for a couple of more years?

OPM Secretary Ben Barnes, the governor's budget chief, said in a phone interview that renovations to the OPM building and two adjacent ones housing the state departments of Public Health and Developmental Services have been "under way for years" at a cost of millions including new brick pointing, caulking of windows a roof replacement that eliminated the need for "buckets everywhere" when it rained.

"I understand the sensitivity about this," he said. But "to suspend the project at this point would entail a huge waste of time and energy," and "to let these public assets deteriorate with out proper attention to them would be short-sighted." Planning for some of the renovations dates back to before Malloy took office in 2011, he said.

The other thing about the renovation project is that it's being funded with bonds that will be repaid over 20 years, so canceling the project wouldn't immediately reduce the state deficit by the full $700,000, he said.

Barnes has become accustomed to answering reporters' questions, particularly since the December raises were announced as darkness fell on the day before Christmas Eve. He defended those pay hikes including his own, from $187,000 to $210,000 a year against a public outcry by saying that the appointees are valuable, capable people, many of whom hadn't had a raise in four years, while unionized employees had been.

He said the state needed to compensate them to assure that it didn't lose their expertise by their finding something better elsewhere. Some doubted the proposition that for lack of a raise someone would leave a good-paying state job, with enviable health benefits and a good pension.
