I've been pouring through the new edition of "Sunset Western Garden Book of Landscaping: The Complete Guide to Beautiful Paths, Patios, Plantings and More." This book is hot off the press, published just this month. It complements "Sunset's New Western Garden Book" (ninth edition, February 2012), which is about plants.
The book provides more than 600 color photographs of gardens in the western states, with ideas for home gardeners and landscape professionals. It is organized under five headings: Gardens, Structures, Plants, Finishing Touches and Planning. Each section visits numerous topics, illustrating each in pages of comments and captioned photographs. The text identifies almost all plants that are shown, and the excellent index lists them all, as well.
Each topic could motivate the reader to seek detailed information in other sources.
Editor Kathleen Norris Brenzel notes that the book is primarily about inspiration, with an underlying theme of earth-friendly, sustainable design. In a brief introduction, landscape architect William R. Marken defines sustainability as basic to the "new golden age of landscape design," which has grown out of Thomas Church's four principles:
Unity of house and garden;
Function, serving household needs;
Simplicity, considering both costs and aesthetics; and
Scale, relating the parts of the landscape.

If you enjoy a pleasant evening on a restaurant patio you might raise a glass to this: Vancouver has decided to allow a select number of restaurants to keep their patios open longer hours during the Sochi Olympics.
Some of those restaurants can even expand their patio service, as long as everyone remains well behaved.
Even in mid-February, you can find those outdoor heated patios in use in Vancouver.
Under current rules, restaurants must stop serving alcohol at 11:00 p.m.
But starting in April, some of the trouble-free restaurants will be allowed to serve up to midnight.
In the summer, the choice is easy: most restaurant goers will choose outdoor seating.
And while extending serving an extra hour might seem a progressive step by international standards, B.C.s regulations are very conservative.
Patios in cities like Paris and Amsterdam never close.
The city is planning on taking the outdoor patio one step further, a step they say will appeal to restaurants in the right location. Some restaurants may able to open patios on the opposite side of the street from their establishment.
Several B.C. restaurants and pubs have applied for special liquor permits to accommodate Olympic events that start early, like Thursday mornings Canada vs. Norway hockey game.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) A program allowing people to enjoy restaurant patios for an hour longer in Vancouver may be expanded come Wednesday.
Vancouver council will vote to open the trial up to more than 300 large patio restaurants.
Forty-six of the patios have taken it up so far but we have 316 large patios in the city so wed like to see this expand. Wed like to see it in neighbourhoods throughout the city so we can really test peoples ability to really run those patios well and make sure the neighbours are okay with it, says Vancouver City Councillor Heather Deal.
Hours would extend to midnight and the trial would run from April to October.
It also allows some restaurants, if they are in the right kind of area with the right kind of sidewalk, to apply to have their patio not right next to the building but perhaps across the sidewalk from it so that you can put the tables and chairs amongst things like street trees but leave the sidewalk open in between for people to walk.
Deal says most should be able to apply to take part but cant have a poor record of complaints.

Barrie Advance
Although Memorial Square is covered in snow and cold winds blow along Dunlop Street, Downtown Barrie is warming up for a flavour-filled spring and summer.
If you want to taste the area youre visiting, a lot of times its the street food (you buy). In Thailand, its the street vendors you go to. Its the same in Mexico, said Downtown Barrie BIA managing director Craig Stevens.
The BIA is pitching local restaurants on the idea of setting up shop in the Memorial Square area this summer.
Whether local eateries serve new, easy-to-eat items selling for $5.50 from a truck or one of a series of carts, they could expand their menus and their reach, Stevens said. Tara could do a naan wrap, he suggested. Youd get something good to eat in a cool environment, but it has a direct tie-back to the restaurants (downtown).
You want more flavour and more variety? Sometimes you fell like (having) a naan wrap, a fish skewer or a taco.
Stevens said hes asking restaurants if theyd like to set aside time for the street-food initiative, which would add more healthy and creative options to the fries, poutine, hot dogs and sausages that have been enjoyed downtown for many summers.
Memorial Square is the spot. Well reach out and see what will work best, he added.
The BIA is also meeting with city centre revitalization co-ordinator Janet Foster this week to discuss patios. It proposals the patios open April 15 and close Oct. 15.
Barrie introduced the seasonal patios two years ago. The number of participating businesses grew from nine the first year to about 15 last year.
