PORTLAND, MI - Oh, that deck.

In the summer time, when theres no pandemic, the deck over the Looking Glass River at Fabianos River House Bar & Grill in Portland is rocking. Live music on the weekends, a huge fireplace, big big crowds and good times.

You know what that decks like, said Bill Fabiano, who opened the restaurant in December of 2014 with his wife Rachelle. The patio is the big draw.

Hes referring to the day Michigans Best visited in 2017 when we were the search for Michigans Best Chicken Wings. On that day we sampled their wings sauced by Michigan-made Sauce Gone Wild, right on that deck.

But we did that without Bill and Rachelle. They were at the hospital for the birth of their first child, Vivienne.

We went into the hospital the morning you guys came in, Fabiano remembered. Shes not so little any more. Shes 3 1/2 years old.

Well, we remember the day well, and that beautiful, spacious deck right on the water.

Its the reason Fabianos was voted as the top spot for Michigans Best Outdoor Dining in the Lansing area with 58 percent of the vote, winning in a landslide over Lansing Brewing Company, which has 12 percent of the vote, and Acapulco Mexican Grill in Charlotte with 3.8 percent.

Fabiano said the deck, which is actually located where the Looking Glass River meets the Grand River, is typically shut down each winter.

In fact, they had just winterized it when the second shutdown closed Michigan restaurants and bars from Nov. 18-Feb. 1 to limit the spread of Covid-19.

We had to move everything outdoors, he said. That meant adding heaters, fire tables and even carpeting to the deck, which typically has a capacity of 80 people.

It also meant no running water, sinks, pop guns or draft beer on tap. That was all indoors.

The girls had to go in out for everything, Fabiano said.

Were they happy about that?

They were happy to be working, said Fabiano, who laughed, but in all seriousness praised his staff of about 25 employees who have worked so hard through the roller coaster ride of the pandemic.

But theyre wearing snowsuits and mittens and doing their best to stay warm.

With indoor dining back at 25 percent capacity, he has put the sides down to use the space as additional indoor dining.

But as soon as the sub-zero weather breaks, were going to push the sides back up and call it outdoor dining again. The wood-burning fireplace makes a difference out there. Forty degrees in the spring is whole lot warmer than 40 degrees in the fall.

A booming delivery service within a 5-mile radius of Portland also helped them get through both shutdowns.

Fabiano said he invested in insulated carriers and car tops just before an historic flood in February of 2019 on the Grand River. The community was declared a local state of emergency. Fabianos had to close for two weeks.

Delivery was put on hold.

Then, when the first shutdown happened in March, he was ready to hit the ground running. Literally.

That first day, we had everything ready to go, Fabiano said. It was a saving grace... I didnt realize the demand for deliver in Portland in such a small town.

Food

As for food, customers love the wings, of course. The garlic parmesan is the top-selling flavor. And the popular Friday Fish Fry is back with $12.99 all you can eat cod.

But Fabiano said pizza also gets rave reviews from customers, especially the chicken bacon ranch specialty pizza.

The Fabiano name is synonymous with pizza, and goes back to the 1970s with his aunt and uncles party store in nearby Wacousta, he said. His uncle, Steve Fabiano, owns the Eagle Inn (which was also on our search for Best Wings). Theres Fabianos Pizzeria in Westphalia. And his dad had Fabianos on the River on Torch Lake for many years until selling in August.

All the same family, all independently owned and operated, Fabiano said.

As for the patio, people are still using it, despite the cold weather.

Were actually going to leave the patio open year round now, he said.

It opens at 4 p.m. on most days, and at noon on Saturdays.

A Portland High School graduate of 2001, Bill and his wife Rachelle live in Eagle. Both have full time jobs, too. Bill is a firefighter for the city of Grand Rapids, and Rachelle works for a credit union in Lansing. Plus, they have the little one.

They love the Portland community.

Weve had great support....people are coming out, he said. They dont mind it being a little chilly.

Day drinking is an art and a joy of its own. At its best, its an occasional escape from an ordinary day or a chance to celebrate with friends. A hectic work week, a dragging day or an impromptu get together can all call for a daytime drink.

Day drinking is a uniquely different excursion as compared to its counterpart, the evening outing. It often means happy hours, smaller crowds and soaking in a beautiful day outdoors. The tradition has evolved since the Mad Men days when a three martini lunch was way more than a legend for many businessmen.

Now, its hopefully a little more controlled, festive and joyful reserved for special instances rather than an everyday thing.

Luckily, Houston has no shortage of restaurants and bars that open early for day drinking. Some of the citys best oases for those in search of a drink while the sun is still up have beautiful patios, garden retreats, rooftop perches and happy hour specials galore.

The Heights

Eight Row Flints mid happy hour is on Mondays through Fridays from 2 pm until 6 pm with margaritas and mules on the menu for $6.50.

Eight Row Flints modern patio is a climate controlled space in the heart of The Heights neighborhood.

Upper Kirby

The brewerys restaurant tries to pair its pub food with the beer thats produced on site.

Theres a small patio outside and candle-lit tables and chairs inside. Whats believed to be the oldest bar in Houston opens at 1 pm and is conveniently just steps away from downtowns modern skyscrapers.

Located in the eclectic boutique hotel, Hotel Zaza in the Museum District, Monarch Restaurant & Terrace is open for lunch Fridays through Sundays and for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. Four years after founding Rise Pizzeria in Burlingame, restaurateur Omid Zahedi has opened his second, much larger concept on the Peninsula, Rise Woodfire.

For this venture hes imported two wood-fired pizza ovens from Naples and a wood-fired rotisserie from Texas to turn out what he calls elevated comfort food spitfire-roasted prime rib, firewood oven-roasted salmon, slow-roasted rotisserie chicken and, of course, blistered-crust pizzas.

And its all being created in a prominent location, the historic downtown San Mateo train station. Zahedi took over the space that formerly had housed the Melting Pot and embarked on a full renovation that includes an Italian-made mural and plenty of decorative tile and Italian marble.

For alfresco dining, Rise offers a large heated patio with a full bar. When indoor dining resumes, the restaurant will be able to serve a total of 200 people.

Zahedi grew up in the fast-food pizza business his Iranian immigrant father opened pizzerias after coming to this country but chose the financial services field for his career. Years later, he developed a passion for the new wave of fine pizza and built a brick oven on a trailer to practice on family, friends and serve at charity events. Once the recipes were perfected, he and wife Susan Payrovi started looking for restaurant spaces.

So far, San Mateo customers are making best sellers of the Funghi pizza (with portobellos and four cheeses) and the Calabrese (drizzled with raw honey), along with the rotisserie chicken, which comes with your choice of sides and sauce.

The pizza menu ventures further into creative territory with a Brussels Sprouts and Smoked Pancetta combo, Medjool Date with Chevre, and Artichoke and Spinach.

Dipping sauces for chicken (or those pizza crusts) number seven, all of them gluten-free: Argentinian Chimichurri, Peruvian Aji Amarillo, Woodfired Pineapple Teriyaki Chipotle, Creamy Horseradish & Chives, Spicy Buffalo, Chipotle Barbecue and Peppercorn Ranch.

And then there are the other pies that Rise bakes. Pies rotate, but the blueberry pie is amazing and not very sweet, Zahedi said. We use organic blueberries in that one.

The lineup of specialty cocktails includes the appropriately named Lovely Loco Motive, made with your choice of Ketel One vodka or Tanqueray gin, white peach puree, lemon and Earl Grey bitters, and the Golden Spike, a George Dickel Rye Whiskey number with maraschino cherry liqueur, pineapple and ginger.

Although the brewery's grand opening saw 70 degree weatherback in 2017, this anniversary is shaping up to be a little or a lot more chilly.

But dont fret -- Brink's patio tents will be toasty and its taprooms well-prepared with special variants and barrel-aged beers to enjoy.

The celebration will take place from Friday, Feb. 19 to Sunday, Feb. 21. On Feb. 20, the brewery will release its Fourth Anniversary Barrel Aged Blend in 12-ounce bottles.The brewerys Facebook event page says to stay tuned for the final line-up of beers and bottles.

In just four years, the brewery has received a great deal of national praise.

In 2019, Brink won the Very Small Brewing Company of the Year by the Brewers Association at the 33rd annual Great American Beer Festival. The festival also namedBrink the top Very Small Brewing Company and Very Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year in 2018.

Two of Brink's beers, Hold the Reins and Moozie, have taken home several awards from the fest over the years.
