Officials at Excela Health have been dealing with pest activity uncovered during renovations in the system's Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg, health system officials said.

When asked to identify the type of pest involved, Excela spokeswoman Robin Jennings said she could not offer specifics because she had not been at the construction site.

Pest activity is pest activity, she said.

A memo distributed to employees said, During the early phases of removing drywall and ceilings, we noticed some evidence of pest activity.

As required by policy, we have notified both state licensing agencies, the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture of our plans, the memo said.

In an email to the Trib, Michael D. Busch, Excela executive vice president and chief operating officer, said, as part of our standard work for all renovations and construction on any campus, we include Terminix, our pest control consultants, to work with contractors as we remove old surfaces and walls.

During construction, we did encounter the presence of some pest activity that we remediated and treated without incident, Busch said.

He said the discovery was made during renovations to a food production facility, dining room and retail food area on the hospital's ground floor.

Greensburg officials said the hospital notified the city about the problem on Aug. 16, according to City Manager Sue Trout.

She said the health system has not offered details about the matter.
