Henderson County beekeepers group launches annual school - February 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) When it comes to Henderson County's $38.5 million fruit and vegetable economy, local extension agents say you can largely thank a winged insect from Europe.

Western honeybees, introduced to America by settlers in 1622, are responsible for pollinating about $15 billion worth of crops nationwide, said Cooperative Extension Director Marvin Owings Jr.

"They're extremely important to our apple growers, particularly our fresh fruit growers anyone growing small fruits such as blackberries and vegetable farmers," he said. "One out of every three mouthfuls of food you eat every day is thanks to a honeybee."

But honeybee populations have been in severe decline for more than a decade, apiarists say, thanks to a combination of pesticide use, loss of foraging habitat, climate change, parasites, viruses and predatory insects.

"Billions of dollars have been spent on pest control without the consideration of consequences on the honeybees and other useful pollinators," said David Stallings, vice president of the Henderson County Beekeepers Association.

Part of the problem, Stallings says, is that most of the estimated 2 million honeybee colonies left in the U.S. are part of a commercial pollination industry that trucks hives all across the country, spreading crippling diseases and parasites.

So just as agricultural groups have begun promoting locally grown foods, the Henderson County Beekeepers are pushing homegrown bees. Hobbyists can help meet local pollination needs with bee colonies acclimated to this area, they say, using fewer chemical drugs than large commercial apiaries need.

The association recently kicked off its annual six-week Beekeeping School at Mountain Horticultural Crops Research station in Mills River to help foster a new generation of apiarists trained to provide the pollinators, honey and beeswax of the future.

Co-sponsored by the local Extension Service office, the school meets every Monday from 7-9 p.m. through March 2. Topics covered include the biology and life cycle of honeybees; getting started with small, nucleus hives; swarm control methods; nectar plants; hive products; and dealing with brood diseases, parasites and nest scavengers.

Once the school is over, association leaders say their group continues to provide support and guidance to newbie beekeepers, a necessity in today's complex apiary environment. Weather permitting, the group holds workshops at Historic Johnson Farm on Saturday mornings.

This Popular Gardening Stock Is Poised For A Double-Digit Breakout - February 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Even where I live in Canada, glimpses of bare brown earth are starting to dapple white snow. It's not yet time for me to plant my garden, but that moment is not far off.

I'm not alone in my interest to grow some of my own food. Gardening ranks as one of the most popular outdoor leisure activities in North America. Additionally, the National Gardening Association reports that a well-maintained garden can help save you several hundred dollars a year in food costs.

Gardening is expanding beyond backyard plots, as community gardens and even urban apartment gardens increase in popularity.

A key beneficiary of this increasing interest in gardening is Scotts Miracle-Gro (NYSE: SMG ) . The Ohio-based company was started in 1868 and is the world's largest marketer of branded lawn and garden products.

Its global consumer segment, which accounts for roughly 90% of revenue, sells such products as fertilizers, grass seed, spreaders, and plant pest and disease control products. Some of its better-known brands are Scotts, Miracle-Gro, Ortho and Roundup.

It also generates revenue through its lawn care service division, which is the No. 2 player the country and provides residential and commercial lawn, tree and shrub care, and pest control services.

In January, the company acquired Action Pest Control, one of the largest exterminators in the Midwest. Management said this is part of their strategy to grow in the $7 billion pest control market.

They also see growth opportunities in hydroponics, indoor gardening and natural/organic products. With the USDA estimating about 15% of the world's food supply is now grown in urban centers and interest in edible gardening growing, especially among millennials, the company has increased spending on natural product R&D by 15% since 2012.

While revenue growth has been minimal over the past few years, the company has ramped up profits significantly. Adjusted earnings per share ( EPS ) grew 39% in fiscal 2013 and another 18% in the year ended Sept. 30, 2014.

This strong earnings performance allowed Scotts to issue a special dividend of $2 a share in August and initiate a $500 million share buyback program. Its regular quarterly dividend of $0.45 presents shareholders with a 2.7% forward annual yield.

That bites! BG among worst bedbug cities - January 29, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bowling Green is 48th on pest control company Orkins annual Bedbug Cities list.

Based on the number of treatments the company did in2014, the list is comprised of the 50 most bedbug-ridden cities in the United States. This is Bowling Greens first time on the list.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said bedbugs are small, flat parasitic insects that feed solely on the blood of people and animals while they sleep. They are reddish-brown in color, wingless, can range from 1 millimeter to 7 millimeters long and can live several months without a blood meal.

Theyre a quarter of an inch long and easily seen. Droplets of blood are found where bedbugs are hiding, said David Burton, environmental health program manager at the Barren River District Health Department. They are relatively easy to find if you take the time to look and know what youre looking for.

Bedbugs can be in places that are clean or those with poor sanitation, saidShellie Miller, branch manager at Orkin in Bowling Green.

Theyre very nondiscriminatory. They will reproduce anywhere, she said. All they do is eat blood. Thats all they need to survive.

The health department handles reports for bedbugs in hotels, motels and schools.

We inspect and issue operating permits. Bedbugs are listed as a nuisance in that they bite people and are hard to get rid of, Burton said. They hitch rides on your clothes and just about anywhere. Theyre not listed as a health hazard.

When environmentalists find bedbugs, they refer the business to a licensed pest control operator as well as to the Kentucky Department of Public Health website atchfs.ky.gov/dph/ or the CDC website at cdc.gov.

Theyre pretty common. You just have to be watchful, Burton said. Check the bed, bed covers, walls behind the furniture. Just be thorough.
