Apprentice plumber called into Samoa squad - October 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Apprentice plumber Jack Taulapapa's rugby career is suddenly flowing as smoothly as an unblocked pipe.

That's because two weeks ago the 21-year-old Johnsonville halfback got the sort of phone call most club players can only dream about.

"The phone rang out of the blue and it was Alama [Ieremia]," Taulapapa said after his unexpected callup for Samoa's end of year tour to Europe.

"He just asked me a few questions, checked up on how I was going, and said they were looking to bring a new halfback into the squad, breed a new guy in.

"He said they had a few options, but were checking up on what I was up to and that was really the first contact I'd had."

Taulapapa figured he'd spend the summer finishing off the third year of his four-year apprenticeship with Wellington plumbing company Park & Clarke.

But Ieremia had been carefully monitoring the St Pat's Town oldboy's form in Wellington club rugby and clearly liked what he saw.

"It was a bit of a shock. I'd been told someone had put my name forward for Samoa at the start of the year, but I didn't expect to get a call from the coach," Taulapapa said.

"It was always in the back of my mind and this year I've really given rugby a proper crack, but I'm a plumbing apprentice, so it's been working all week and just playing at the weekend for J'ville."

His first task as an international rugby player will be asking for some unexpected leave next month, with Samoa set to play Italy in Rome, followed by tests against Canada, in France and England at Twickenham.

Rhyl plumber receives top military honour from Russia - October 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A FORMER Rhyl plumber has received a top Second World war military honour from the Russians.

Grandfather Harry Ratcliffe, who celebrates his 91st birthday next week, received the Ushakov Medal, presented on behalf of President Putin, from the Russian Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko at the Russian Embassy in London. The medal marks his service in the Arctic Convoys which kept Russia supplied throughout the Second World War.

In addition to keeping Russia supplied and able to continue fighting Germany alongside Britain and America, the convoys helped to win the war by tying up a substantial part of Germanys navy and air force.

Mr Ratcliffe, who lives in Burns Drive, was a Royal Navy rating on HMS Opportune, which made 10 voyages as part of the 17th Destroyer Flotilla.

He said: It was a marvellous day. The Russians made us feel so honoured. It has been a long time since those cold, dark days of the Arctic Convoys but the memories came rushing back as I received this wonderful medal, with my daughter Mary and granddaughter Kate. It really was a day to remember.

"It was a wonderful occasion and a very moving ceremony, said Mary Morrison

I was thrilled that my dad had - after all these years finally got the recognition he deserved for his war time service. The Russian embassy officials were so grateful to these men for all they had done."

Son-in-law Colin Morrison added: He was overwhelmed by the whole thing. He felt it was long overdue recognition.

He was amazed at these Russian officers were falling over themselves to express their grattitude to himself and others.

The ceremony followed a campaign by Vale of Clwyd MP Chris Ruane who had protested about the long-time opposition of the British Government to the Russian plans to honour the servicemen.

TODAYS workforce is tough enough for young people just starting out, but for Tamworth TAFE student Jarrod Shackleton, theres another hurdle he has to clear on a daily basis.

Jarrod is hearing-impaired, which presents a few more challenges than usual in the completion of his plumbing apprenticeship not that hes complaining.

I love the hard work, which is a challenge, I love that the job can be different each day, at a different location, and I also enjoy meeting different people, he said.

Hes proving himself a talent in his trade, too, recently being named among just 25 apprentice plumbers nationwide to secure a $1000 grant from Rheem.

Jarrod, who lives and works in Denman and makes a 370km round trip to Tamworth for TAFEevery few months, says receiving instructions from his employer is probably his biggest on-the-job challenge.

I receive a lot of hand signals and I lip-read, but its more watching and having a hands-on approach to everything, he said.

When I work under or on top of a house, I have an FM system which deaf people use.
