Kidderminster plumber stole 4,000 from pensioners - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A self-employed plumber duped almost 4,000 out of five pensioners, causing 'a menace to the community', a court heard.

Steven Greenaway faces sentencing and a possible antisocial behaviour order after admitting to 13 counts of fraud at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The 41-year-old overcharged the five customers by 3,835 over a three year period from 2010 - despite being convicted for similar offences in 2012.

At a hearing yesterday, prosecutor Mark Jackson said: "He is a convicted confidence trickster who uses his status as a self-employed plumber responding to emergency call-outs to defraud customers in their own homes by grossly overcharging them for work."

He added: "He is a menace to the community. The fact he has been sentenced has made no difference at all to going and duping members of the community in their own homes.

"There can be no doubt his activities have caused harassment, alarm and distress."

Greenaway's victims included Lynne Watkins, of Cradley Heath, who was billed 1,527 to stop leaks from burst pipes and supply and install a new toilet system.

But her insurance company only gave her 200 after inspecting the work, carried out in December in 2010.

In the same month, he charged June Gilliam, of Halesowen, 787 to repair a leak to a downstairs toilet.

He continued the following the month when he billed Irene and Raymond Perry 817 to repair a leak in their kitchen.

Drunken wedding outburst has sequel in court - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As dawn broke on his brother's wedding day, an Auckland plumber began drinking.

Throughout the big day, Anthony Charles Dobson reckons he downed about 40 wines.

A groomsman for the celebrations at the upmarket Bridgewater Country Estate in Helensville, Dobson wasn't supposed to ruin the wedding with a violent drunken outburst. But about 9.30pm on the November night, that's what the 36-year-old plumber did.

A barman at the estate refused to serve Dobson, so the groomsman let fly with a volley of abuse, grabbed a wine glass, smashed it, and jabbed it towards the evading worker.

Other guests intervened but Dobson broke free, picked up another two glasses and hurled them at the barman, who was forced to sidestep the projectiles.

Amid more threats of "smashing", the barman fled as Dobson ran at him from behind a bush.

Dobson was tackled to the ground by other guests whom he labelled a "bunch of pussies".

Police were called and a lone officer arrived to find Dobson lying on the road. He wasn't finished with the abuse and the officer copped it this time and was forced to call for help.

When in the patrol car, Dobson told officers he would "take them on" if his cuffs were removed. Dobson's night of mayhem resulted in his admitting one charge each of assault with a weapon, threatening behaviour and disorderly behaviour.

In the Waitakere District Court yesterday, his lawyer Ashley Thomas said Dobson was remorseful and felt humiliated.

Bob Hoskins: 10 things you didn't know - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    3. He was Hollywood's best plumber

Not only did he play a plumber in both Brazil and Super Mario Brothers, Hoskins also wore the overalls in real life. Before becoming an actor, he worked as a plumber's assistant, but his career was cut short after he burnt his workmate's foot: "I was on a ladder and he was fixing a pipe up in the ceiling," he explained. "I got a blowlamp, and set fire to his boot! That was the end of the trade for me."

    4. He was no pretty-boy

The critic Pauline Kael famously described Hoskins as "a testicle on legs". But he was used to such jibes. As a boy, Hoskins once went missing from home. When his mother worried that he'd been kidnapped, his aunt calmed her: "Don't fret. Even if someone's taken him, with his looks, they'll soon be bringing him back."

    5. Herman Munster was his hero

Cast in The Cotton Club, Hoskins was far more thrilled at the thought of acting alongside Fred Gwynne aka, Herman Munster than at the thought of being directed by Francis Ford Coppola: "When Francis told me he was my sidekick, I couldn't have been more impressed if he'd said, 'This is Marlon Brando'."

    6. He was paid $200,000 not to appear in The Untouchables

Brain De Palma sent Hoskins the script for his Prohibition-era gangster film and asked if he'd like to play Al Capone but only if Robert De Niro wasn't available. He was, so Hoskins promptly forgot about it until a cheque for $200,000 arrived in the post, along with a thank-you note from De Palma. Hoskins picked up the phone and told the director: "If you've got any more films you don't want me to be in, I'm available."

    7. He did NOT stalk Madonna

Drug dealer is spared prison - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Drug dealer is spared prison

3:00pm Thursday 1st May 2014 in News By Joe Nimmo, Senior reporter. Call me on (01865) 425373.

A YOUNG plumber has been spared a prison sentence after he was caught dealing cannabis in Oxford.

Jordan Gray, of Verbena Way, Greater Leys, Oxford, was arrested on September 25 at around 4pm in Cowley driving a BMW.

Charles Ward-Jackson, prosecuting, said officers searched the car and found a sports bag containing 41.74g of skunk cannabis.

He said a police expert had valued the Class B drug as having a street value of between 360 and 420.

The barrister told Judge Gordon Risius that Gray was also carrying 400 in cash and a further small amount of cannabis was found when they searched his home address.

Mr Ward-Jackson said when interviewed the 24-year-old rather rashly told police they wouldnt find any messages relating to drugs on his mobile phone. But he said when they searched the device they in fact found many messages such as got any of that cheese? which were asking for cannabis.

Grey was charged with possession of drugs with intent to supply and admitted the offence.

David Rhodes, defending, said although his client had two cautions for possessing cannabis he was a hard-working trained plumber.
