Q: I am looking to install a new whirlpool tub with my bathroom renovation, and the salespeople I'm working with have been going over options that can be added to the whirlpool. One option is called "chromatherapy," which they tell me is a lighting system for the whirlpool. Can you please tell me more about it? Jimmy, Ohio

A: Chromatherapy is sometimes called light therapy, and this type of therapy crosses over into a few different fields. So I want to make it clear that we're discussing chromatherapy as it relates to use in plumbing fixtures only.

This type of technology is available on bubble-massage tubs, hot tubs and high-end custom shower stalls as well as whirlpool tubs. But even though these involve different plumbing fixtures, basically it's the same light-relaxation concept being used.

Chromatherapy uses soothing colors of light that seamlessly change from color to color every minute or so, then constantly repeats the sequence. You can even hold a color to suit your mood. Featured colors can include blue, red, yellow, orange and green.

Bottom line: With chromatherapy, when the bathroom lights are off and the water turns colors, you may feel like you're riding a rainbow!
