Porch couches could be axed after code update - December 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

POSTED AT 11:32 PM ON Nov. 29, 2012

Renters, get your indoor couch off your outside porch.

Thats one of the changes the Bloomington City Council approved in the Bloomington Property Maintenance Code on Nov. 14.

Changes in smoke detector requirements dominated the debate during the Property Maintenance Code updating process, but other changes are coming soon.

Couches, armchairs and futons are among the traditional indoor furniture that dot Bloomington front porches. In the near future, rental property tenants will be banned from using such seating and instead be limited to using only designated outdoor furniture.

The ban on upholstered porch furniture wont immediately go into effect. A review of certain parts of the Property Maintenance Code by the Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission is tentatively set for February 2013.

Housing and Neighborhood Development Director Lisa Abbott said she worked on the updates for months. The codes most recent update was in 2003.

Much of the property in Bloomington is rental units. In 2011, there were 21,612 registered rental units in the city, accounting for 60 percent of total housing, according to city records.

The neighborhoods have been asking for this for a long time, for a number of reasons, Abbott said.

She cited neighbor complaints on weather-exposed upholstered furniture that often begins to smell due to mildew. Aesthetic concerns of older front porch furniture also played into some complaints.

Pricey Planters Stolen Off Highland Park Porches - December 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Highland Park police are trying investigating a bizarre crime spree -- the thefts of several pricey large planters.

Sgt. Lance Koppa said six large pots have been stolen from front porches since Nov. 20.

"They're driving around -- they're identifying which ones they want to take and come back a few hours later and they snatch them off the front porch," he said.

Koppa said the pots can cost several hundred dollars.

"They're expensive," said Anne Palles, who lives a few doors down from where several pots were stolen. "You know, these are custom pots and, gosh, if they're taking them with plants in them, that's an extra bonus. That's more of a savings."

Palles said thieves tried to steal her giant planters but couldn't because they are partially anchored to the patio with plumbing.

"This pot had been scooted over closer to the edge, and we didn't think anything about it at the time," she said.

The planter the thieves tried to steal from her porch weighs more than 300 pounds. Another large bowl near her front door weighs even more.

"It took four gentlemen to lift that center pot over there, just to get it in place without dirt," Palles said.

Koppa said there must be a market for stolen pottery but, so far, police can't find it.

1984 Le Mans review – Video - November 29, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    1984 Le Mans review
http://www.dukevideo.com http://www.dukevideo.com The greatest endurance race in the world is the ultimate mix of high-speed action, drama and skill and the 1984 running of the Le Mans 24 hours race was no exception. With the factory Porches withdrawn the scene was set for one of the most unpredictable events for many years, with the works Lancias, privately-entered Porsche machinery and, unexpectedly, the Peugeots, battling for victory. They would be pursued by the determined Aston Martins and the Jaguars, returning to Le Mans for the first time in more than 25 years. The superb action footage on this review captures the fast and furious racing from the opening hours as the Lancias, the Joest and Kremer Porsches and the Peugeots battle for the lead - and the crash which left the Peugeot bid in tatters. There #39;s also a wealth of in-car footage courtesy of the Canon Porsche 956 of Richard Lloyd, Rene Metge and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, including the awesome Mulsanne straight at speeds of up to 230mph! As evening fell Le Mans was hit by an horrific accident which shocked drivers and fans, the aftermath and Lloyd #39;s emotional reaction caught on this review. The race continued through the night, but as day broke so did many of the cars, turning the running order on its head and setting up a real fight to the finish. This action-packed review features every essential moment, a close-up look at the cars during scrutineering, a taste of qualifying, interviews with the stars and all the ...From:dukevideoViews:2 0ratingsTime:02:41More inSports

Thieves hunting for presents on porches - November 29, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Christmas is coming early for thieves who are on the hunt for your presents.

South Austin homeowners say crooks are casing their neighborhoods looking for packages on porches.

"Maybe it's people just wanting to take advantage of the situation," said Bryan Jinnett. "Others looking for gifts to give their families or pawn - I'm not real sure to be quite honest."

Bryan was hit by the holiday Grinch. Last week, UPS left a box on his doorstep. A neighbor found it open and tossed in their yard.

"It sounds like whoever took it from my front porch opened it up, went through it, realized it wasn't really anything of value," said Jinnett. "I don't think anybody wants uniforms."

It was a delivery Bryan had ordered for his job. He typically gets two to three packages delivered to his doorstep each week, and has never had problems before.

Another homeowner found two more shipping boxes dumped behind their neighborhood park. One box was empty and the other one still had items inside.

Stolen packages around the holiday season is not a shock to Kyle Scheumack. He works at the UPS store on Guadalupe near the University of Texas campus.

He likes to tell customers to have deliveries shipped to his UPS store.

"We do charge five dollars to do that, but it's better than losing your $800 iPhone," said Scheumack.

Neighborhoods send warning after packages are stolen from porches - November 29, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAN ANTONIO -- People living in the Colonies North subdivision, near 410 and Wurzbach, and neighboring Colonial Hills are on alert after they say thieves have been targeting their porches for packages.

Neighbor Pat Bode said she saw a thief take a package from her neighbor's door step earlier this month in broad day light. "He picked up a package and ran back to the vehicle and they took off," Bode said.

Delivery companies like UPS and FedEx suggest customers get tracking on their packages and also request somebody sign for them.

The companies also say it might be a good idea to ask a neighbor to look out for their order, or have the package delivered to their place of employment.

If a customer believes a package was taken from his or her doorstep, UPS advises the individual to file a police report.
