WARREN A Dearborn man might have been speeding when he lost control of his vehicle at about 5:30 a.m. Friday and crashed on eastbound I-696 near Mound Road, according to the Michigan State Police.
The 50-year-old, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The man was driving his 1997 two-door Saturn when he struck a concrete retaining wall, Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw wrote in a press release.
The impact forced the Saturn back into the eastbound lanes of traffic where it was struck by a semitruck, Shaw wrote.
The semitruck driver wasnt hurt.
Shaw said Warren firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to cut through the wreckage to remove the driver.
Since the crash took place on the shoulder, police did not have to shut down the freeway during the morning rush hour, Shaw said, though there were delays. The man was wearing a seat belt and alcohol was not a factor. Investigators believe he was driving too fast on the wet freeway.
State troopers are continuing their investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-248-595-1725 and ask for Trooper Tom Mathis.

CATSKILL, N.Y. The town is seeking clarification from the state Department of Environmental Conservation about proposed changes in a repair plan for a 100-foot retaining wall along the Kaaterskill Creek in Palenville.
At a Town Board meeting Tuesday, town Supervisor Joseph Leggio said he asked the state agency to expedite its review of new engineering plan for the $1.5 million project.
I called DEC (Tuesday) morning ... and told (state officials) ... I would really appreciate it if you could get us an answer as soon as possible, because I do not want to bond the money and I dont believe the board does either if were not going to be able to commit to this project, he said.
The wall is planned along the creek bank near Woodstock Avenue, behind the Palenville fire station.
Work was planned after Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011, but delays in state approval pushed the start of the project until after September last year because of potential impacts to fish habitats.
In November, the Town Board decided to cancel bonds to finance the project because the board did not want to pay 2 percent in annual interest on the bonds when no work was being done.
Federal funding is expected to cover 75 percent of the project cost, with the state covering the remaining 25 percent.
Richard Praetorius, the town engineering consultant, raised concerns in a March 28 letter that the state and federal specifications for the wall are not adequate for the structure to withstand another big storm like Irene.
We determine that the toe rocks would need to be a minimum of 12,000 pounds per lineal foot along the stream, he wrote. Assuming a 4-foot wide toe rock, this would mean that individual toe rocks would be at least 48,000 pounds each. ... Even if placing rocks of this size was feasible, given the angle of impact and the stream velocity at this particular location, we are not confident that a rip rap slope would be capable of withstanding the forces from a 100-year storm event.

I REFER to the letter MRT too close for comfort (The Star, March 29). We would like to thank the writer for the feedback on the Klang Valley MRT Project.
We, however, would like to respond to some of the points made and correct inaccurate assertions.
We are happy that the writer understands that the Klang Valley is in dire need of a good public transport system.
Everyone recognises that a good public transport system is needed for Kuala Lumpur to continue to grow economically and at the same time, be one of the most liveable cities in the world.
Without a good urban rail service with the MRT forming a major component of this network, the roads of Kuala Lumpur will be choked, bringing about dire consequences not only in terms of economic growth, but also to the quality of life of its denizens.
The writer was, however, incorrect in saying that the MRT is being built a couple of feet away from the houses of Jalan Kasah in Medan Damansara.
What is being built now is a retaining wall and NOT the MRT viaduct.
With the retaining wall, a new slow lane for the Kuala Lumpur-bound side of the Sprint Highway can be created.
This new lane will compensate for the fast lane of the highway which is being taken for the MRT viaduct.
The MRT, therefore, will run in the middle of the Sprint Highway and not metres behind the houses along Jalan Kasah.

Retaining Wall to Be Constructed at Wainui Reserve
Remedial works to the main beach access track at Wainui Reserve in Raglan are scheduled to begin next week and will involve the construction of a retaining wall.
The construction is due to start on Tuesday 2 April and is expected to be completed by Friday 17 May.
The beach access track will remain open to pedestrians throughout the project however there may be some minor disruption due to the work.
Waikato District Council Acting General Manager Service Delivery Stephen Cox said the works were a result of subsidence of the track which required a retaining wall to be built to minimise the risk of a slip.
If no work is undertaken the access track will continue to subside in the future with the potential for the track to disappear resulting in no access to the beach for emergency services.
Mr Cox said the subsidence was likely caused by coastal erosion at the base of the slope.
The works will involve excavation of the walkway asphalt, minor vegetation clearing, installation of retaining post and panels, followed by reinstatement of the track.
The project was put out to tender with Rock Control Limited the successful contractors.
