Like a swollen river after heavy rain, the number of roofing permits issued weekly since a July 23 hailstorm is still running high but appears to be gradually dropping.
In all, more than 1,400 building permits for new roofs worth more than $15.2 million have been issued since the surge in roofing business started showing up in permits the week of July 29-Aug. 2.
Last week 114 permits worth $818,719 were issued. Both were the lowest figures since the week of Aug. 12-18. But the numbers are still elevated compared with the average of 6.5 roofing permits a week in the four weeks before the storm.
The number of weekly permits peaked at 211 the week of Sept. 2-6. The value peaked at just over $3 million the week of Sept. 16-20, when there were several large commercial jobs among the permits. The value of permits has fallen about 50 percent each of the two weeks since then.
At least 136 contractors have sought permits during the surge. Among the busiest has been Border to Border Roofing with 79 permits, Hamilton Roofing and Acoustics with 69, Elite Roofing with 59, DH Home Improvements with 56 and Mayfield and Sons with 53.
Hail 2.5 to 4 inches in diameter pounded the city during the storm. Roofing jobs are spread throughout the city but are concentrated between Severance and Halstead, from the northern border of the city south to Avenue G.
Some of the biggest re-roofing jobs have been at the Dillons warehouse and headquarters on East Fourth, the Hutchinson Mall, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and the Dillon Living Center.
