Roofing companies must register with Kansas Attorney General’s Office - July 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

TOPEKA, KS (KCTV/AP) -

A new Kansas law will require roofing contractors to register annually with the attorney general's office before they can be paid for their work.

The new law was enacted this year by legislators and is designed to protect consumers. It had the support of Attorney General Derek Schmidt, AARP, the Better Business Bureau and the roofing industry itself.

The law took effect on Monday.

The law says that roofing contractors must obtain an annual certificate from the attorney general's office to solicit business or collect fees for residential or commercial jobs.

Roofers must be at least 18 years old, and they or their companies must show that they carry $500,000 in liability insurance.

The attorney general's office will charge a $250 annual registration fee. Companies have 60 days to register before facing penalties.

Homeowners have horror stories about hiring contractors who perform inferior work and they have difficulties getting the work brought up to standard, especially once the final check is written.

After storms hit, fly-by-night companies will still come in and seek to take advantage of homeowners. But roofers and Schmidt's office say homeowners should do their due diligence.

Homeowners in Kansas can now check to see if a potential contractor is registered.
