Russell Roofing celebrates 20 years in Oreland - June 29, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Roofers come and roofers go, but for the past two decades, the Russell Roofing Co. has been a stable presence in Oreland, steadily expanding its customer base while racking up professional awards.

Founded in 1992, Russell is celebrating its 20th anniversary in business, which makes it, if not unique, then certainly notable, according to Ron Hall, the companys sales manager.

There are so many that fly under the radar and go in and out of business every day, Hall said June 13 at the companys main office on Pennsylvania Avenue. In our trade, theres a race to the bottom If youve got a truck and a ladder, you can call yourself a roofer.

The Russell in the companys title is Russell Kaller, who used his first name to distinguish himself from all the other Kallers in the business. His father ran a roofing company, and his seven brothers and one sister also work in the field.

    Theyre competitors, Hall said.

But thats the way the business goes, he said. There are no roofing schools, and few ways to train except on the job, and so the necessary skills tend to run in families.

Your father is in the trade, and you dont have many options, Hall said.

With satellite offices in Wayne, Pa., and Princeton, N.J., Russell employs 50 workers. Emphasis is placed on worker safety, and the application process includes drug screening.

We want our guys going home to their families, Hall said. Nine out of 10 applicants dont make it through the interview process, and its usually [because of] the drug thing And they work for somebody else.

Business grows largely through word of mouth, Hall said, and in 2011, the company did about $7.5 million worth of business. About 80 percent of the work involves residences, but institutions provide the company with its most visible, challenging, and aesthetically satisfying projects. Continued...

Plymouth Title, Falcone Roofing battle for Babe Ruth title - June 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Plymouth Tire and Falcone Roofing swept Cabbyshack and Cold Spring, respectively, in the best-of-three semifinal series over this past weekend to advance to this weeks championship of the Plymouth Babe Ruth Prep division to arrange a showdown for all of the marbles this week

    Plymouth Tire 15, Cabbyshack 0

Hugh Halligan was near perfect on the mound (two hits, two walks, 6 Ks), and the PT offense supplied more than ample support in Sundays series clincher.

All 11 Plymouth Tire players had at least one hit, paced by three apiece from catcher Drew Mahoney (3-for-3, three runs, RBI, double, walk, three stolen bases) and third baseman Sterling Pilkington (3-for-4, run. four RBI, stolen base).

Going 2-for-3 in the slugfest were shortstop Bobby Colbert (three runs, RBI, three stolen bases, walk), second baseman Dylan Lyons (three runs, two stolen bases, two RBI, walk), first baseman Seth Spellman (three runs, double, three RBI, three stolen bases, sac fly), centerfielder Christian Weppert (three runs, triple, three RBI, two stolen bases, walk) and Halligan (three runs, RBI, two stolen bases, walk). Jesse Gwillliam also had two big hits and three RBI, and base hits also came off the bats of Greg Jones, Curtis Sheppard and Tyler Keating.

    Plymouth Tire 17, Cabbyshack 16

It was far from an artistic success for either team, but PT outlasted a gutsy Cabbyshack performance to notch a win in the opener in the best-of-three semifinals showdown.

Cabbyshack scored a pair to knot the game at 16-16 in the top of the seventh. With two outs in the home half of the frame, Mahoney laced a single to left and stole both second and third during a long at bat from Halligan.

Halligan managed to foul off two two-strike pitches before drawing a walk on a wild pitch that allowed Mahoney to score the game-winner.

There were many errors from both sides, but Devin Bridgwater and Spellman came up with big play after big play in the field for PT, at second and first base, respectively, each of them also going 3-for-4 at the plate. Spellman scored a pair and knocked in three while Bridgwater scored three and knocked in one.

Hundreds of roofing nails dumped at swimming hole - June 21, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

LEESBURG, Ga. (AP) Authorities are asking people to avoid a popular swimming hole on a south Georgia creek as they try to clean up hundreds of roofing nails dumped at the site.

The Albany Herald reports (http://bit.ly/NfO1IO) that members of the Lee County Fire Department's dive team and volunteers will attempt to collect the nails from the "blue hole" underground spring on the Kinchafoonee Creek.

Lee County Chief Marshall and Code Enforcement Officer Jim Wright said vandals are suspected of dumping the nails.

Wright said a local company provided authorities with very strong magnets they hope will attract most of the nails.

The code enforcement office has posted signs asking people not to swim around the blue hole until after the cleanup effort.
