Holden Roofing Recognized for Top Customer Service in Texas - July 12, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX--(Marketwire -07/12/12)- In a survey taken among Texan customers who recently either received repairs to their existing roofs or new installations, Holden Roofing scored highly in every recorded category. Holden Roofing is a family owned business with locations throughout the great state of Texas. They have been serving customers around Texas since their inception in 1961, and are well regarded for their stellar customer service, adherence to the needs of their clients and affordable price points.

Holden Roofing abides by the principle that every customer should be treated as if they are their only customer. According to Holden Roofing's President Brett Holden, "Our goal as a company has been 100% customer satisfaction." There is apparently a significant amount of truth behind Holden's statement, as customers rated Holden Roofing superior in the areas of customer service and courtesy.

But the praise for Holden Roofing did not stop there. Customers also cited that Holden Roofing's installation experts were extremely knowledgeable. Shingle manufacturer, Owens Corning, recognized Holden Roofing's commitment to excellence by accepting them into the "Platinum Preferred Contractor Program," a program recognizing less than 2% of the roofing contractors in the United States.

"We are very proud to have been chosen to join the Platinum Preferred Contractor Program with Owens Corning. It has allowed us to provide our customers with a lot of extra peace of mind by being able to offer some incredible extended warranties through one of the most recognizable manufacturers in the industry," said Travis Joyce, General Manager with Holden Roofing. "Our goal of Consistently Exceeding the Expectations of our customers is something we have worked very hard to achieve each day with every install."

Holden Roofing is a recognized name in the roofing industry. Founded in 1961, Holden touts thousands of satisfied customers and fundraising events (holdenroofingdonates.com/). They possess five locations throughout the state of Texas. Holden's website can be found at http://holdenroofing.com.

Chicago, IL July 11, 2012 - Stocks in this week's article include Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. (NASDAQ: BECN), Titan International, Inc. (NYSE: TWI), InterOil Corp. (NYSE: IOC), Plains All American Pipeline, L.P. (NYSE: PAA) and SLM Corp. (NASDAQ: SLM). Kevin Matras details a good screen to use before and after a company reports this earnings season.

Screen of the Week written by Kevin Matras of Zacks Investment Research:

With earnings having just begun, this is a good screen to use both before and after a company reports.

This screen focuses on more than just earnings surprises, but instead goes over the importance of both earnings surprises and sales surprises, and why as an investor you should care so much about them.

A surprise is more than just a snapshot of an extra few dollars and cents a company made or lost in that one period. Instead, it's a glimpse into what a company's earnings could be, or should be, in the future.

And when these surprises occur, the market tries to quickly re-price that stock to reflect these changes.

While predicting which companies will surprise or not can be difficult, the benefit of an earnings surprise will typically last for one to three months after a surprise is reported.

So you can get in after a company reports a surprise, or you can try and find companies that are more likely to report a surprise, and get in ahead of time.

The screen I'm running today starts off with:

Smog-Eating Roof Tiles Clean Up Surrounding Air - July 4, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Green roofing systems already exist in the form of gardens and agriculture installations. One company, though, has introduced tile roofing that mitigates air pollution. Boral Roofing LLC, which provides sustainable clay and tile roofing solutions, provides a smog-eating roof technology that significantly reduces nitrogen oxide, a key component of smog, and was confirmed by a one-year study.

BoralPure Smog-Eating Tile helps reduce the formation of smog and is installable on both residential and commercial buildings. Boral Roofing boasts that it is the only company that offers a concrete tile roofing solution within the United States that mitigates air pollution.

The technology works via catalysts embedded in each tile that speed up oxidation when they are exposed to sunlight. Each roof tile contains a micro-mortar surface with a titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating. Through a chemical reaction between the TiO2 coating and nitrogen oxide, the tiles are capable of breaking down dangerous smog particles.

The company explains that the photocatalytic properties also destroy organic substances, such as dirt and algae, that come in contact with the tiles. Rain washes off the neutralized substances.

In addition to the smog-eating TiO2 coating, the base materials of the tiles are also beneficial to the environment. Concrete tiles are made of locally sourced raw materials, a mixture of sand, water and cement, and they have the inherent energy benefits of high thermal mass, emissivity, reflectivity and an insulating air space between the tile and the deck, John Renowden, vice president of technology for Boral Roofing, explained in a US Building Digest article.

The tiles are also designed to be recycled for materials for other building structures, should a rooftop need to be replaced.

As an eco-building trend, green roofing systems such as vegetation systems with waterproof barriers have spread due to environmental impact and cost savings, yet as new green technologies like smog-eating tiles emerge, such systems may look very different in the near future.

Boral Roofing reports that according to studies that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted in Los Angeles over one year, the agency discovered that 2,000 square feet of the tiles mitigates the same amount of nitrogen oxide produced by a car driven 10,800 miles in one year.

    Roofing project at NECX completed

    By Paula Walter Freelance Writer

David Hartshorn, head of the project for Osment Roofing Systems, addressed a crowd of approximately 45 people, who had all been instrumental in some way with the roofing contract, at The Tributary Restaurant this past week as they gathered to celebrate the completion of the job. I want to thank you personally for the overall success of the project, he said. The last inspection has been finalized and the project came in approximately 60 days ahead of schedule. According to Sexton, the roof replaced by Osment Roofing Systems was the original roof installed at NECX 22 years ago. The cost of the project was approximately $6.1 million and comes with a 20-year warranty.

According to Hartshorn, Osment Roofing Systems was contacted when the possibility of a new roofing project NECX was in the early developmental stages. The company had previously replaced the roof at Northwest Correctional Complex, located in the very northwestern tip of Tennessee along the Kentucky line. Part of the logistics of deciding whether or not to bid on the job included the unknown factors of what type of work force they would be able to employee. Nothing is as complex as working for a correctional complex, not the people, but the facility, said Hartshorn. Osment's employees remained under the watchful eyes of the correctional officers as they escorted them around the job site. The officers were diligent about giving us the support we needed, Hartshorn said. According to Sexton, most of the buildings were accessed from the outside and did not disrupt the inmates.

One of the first hurdles was the removal of the old roofing components before the new material could be installed. According to Hartshorn, he was concerned about the amount of debris that would need to be taken to the Johnson County Transfer Station. He estimated there was over 300,000 pounds of insulation, rubber and metal that would end up in dumpsters and wanted to find a way to utilize the materials while saving money, as well as being environmentally friendly Hartshorn discovered Reclaimed Resources, a company in Bristol, Tennessee, whose purpose is find both environmental and economical ways to reuse materials. The materials from NECX has been now cut and sized and is ready to be used. According to Sarah Gillespie of Reclaimed Resources, they reclaimed the debris and make it usable. Many of their clients use the recycled items for both new homes and remodeling projects. Every roofer needs to know about Reclaimed Resources, said Hartshorn.

Beacon Roofing to Outperform – Analyst Blog - July 4, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

We are upgrading our recommendation on Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. ( BECN ) to Outperform, following a modest recovery in the housing market, healthy credit conditions and ramp up in the company's acquisition activity.

The company reported earnings of 7 cents per share in the second-quarter 2012, easily beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 8 cents. Results improved compared to a loss of 13 cents in the year-ago quarter. Total revenues increased 33.4% year over year to $395.2 million, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $346 million. Organic growth improved 28.2%.

The housing market is gradually looking up, reaping the benefits from escalation in employment rates and higher consumer confidence. At the same time, roofing demand is also increasing modestly and is expected to grow at an annual rate of 5.7% through 2015.

Alongside, the demand for re-roofing is also on the rise. The median age of the housing stock is over 35 years old and since an aging housing stock increases the demand for roofing materials, it provides ample scope for Beacon to grow in this market.

Beacon has completed the acquisition of the leading wholesale distributor of building products, Cassady Pierce Company. Cassady Pierce chiefly caters to the professional roofer, remodeling contractor, builder, general contractor and retail home center markets of Western Pennsylvania, Northern West Virginia and the Eastern countries of Ohio.

The acquisition will help Beacon in expanding its business activities in the unexplored regions of Pennsylvania. Further, it will augment the company's product portfolio in the lines of building products.

Recently, Beacon entered into a new five-year senior secured credit facility that includes a $550 million U.S. credit facility and a C$15 million ($15.1 million) Canadian credit facility with Wells Fargo Bank, National Association, an unit of Wells Fargo & Company ( WFC ).

The credit facility refinanced the company's prior $515 million credit facilities that were provided through GE Antares and an affiliate. The new credit facility's interest rates are at historically low levels. It provides an attractive LIBOR margin pricing, low interest rates, reasonable financial covenants, as well as substantial liquidity and financial flexibility for the company to pursue acquisitions and growth opportunities.

Beacon's growth strategy, however, depends largely on acquisitions; the primary growth driver since its inception. The company, therefore, faces challenges from acquisition related risks. For instance, management may have trouble finding suitable acquisition candidates that provide synergies in existing markets and upfront earnings accretion.

Moreover, Beacon has to contend with privately held companies like American Builders & Contractors Supply Co., Inc., Guardian Building Products Distribution, Inc., Stock Building Supply LLC. Our recommendation on Beacon is in line with a short-term Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy).

World Roofing Market - July 3, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK, July 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:

    World Roofing Market

    http://www.reportlinker.com/p0923001/World-Roofing-Market.html#utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Home_Building_and_Improvement

World demand to rise 3.7% annually through 2016

World demand for roofing materials is forecast to grow 3.7 percent annually through 2016 to 11.8 billion square meters, a substantial acceleration from the slow growth of the market during the 2006-2011 period. Product sales in dollar terms are projected to grow more quickly, increasing 6.2 percent per year to $108 billion in 2016 as roofing prices rise. Gains in demand will be fueled by a major uptick in residential building construction activity, as construction industries in major developed nations such as the US rebound from their recent weakness. Further growth will be supported by continued gains in developing markets, particularly in the Asia/Pacific region.

US, China to remain key national roofing markets

Two countries, the US and China, will together account for nearly 60 percent of global gains in roofing demand in square meters through 2016. China, the world's largest market for roofing products in 2011, will continue its trend of strong growth and account for more than 30 percent of world market gains. The US, which experienced a collapse in new housing construction that began in 2006, will rebound significantly, but the US roofing market in 2016 will still be slightly below 2006 levels. Strong growth is also expected in a number of smaller developing nations, including India, Indonesia and South Africa. Although some developed countries will see fast rebound-fueled growth similar to the US, market gains will typically be smaller than in developing areas. In fact, Western Europe will be the slowest growing regional roofing market through 2016.

Roofing it in the heat - July 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

When it's this hot and humid with no breeze, most of us can only tolerate being outside for a few minutes. Thank goodness that isn't the case for some hardy roofers. If it weren't for their tolerance for the heat, shingles would never get replaced. We caught up with a father and son team re-roofing a home in Colton under the glaring sun.

"What's it like? I don't know. I guess you just endure. I've done it so long I've just gotten used to it, "Dale said.

Dale Van Dyke has been in the roofing business for 45 years, his son Riley for about 15. This week they are re-shingling a house in Colton and to say it's been hotter than a cat on a tin roof well is an under statement. Even so, they don't seem to mind.

"I think a lot of people think it's really bad but I think there are jobs that are worse like if you are asphalting roads or working with hot tar. For this it probably depends on what color the shingle is too. The lighter color shingle is better than putting on a black shingle, "Dale said.

When temps are in the 90's and the heat index is approaching 100, there are a few tricks of the trade for the boys on the roof to stay upright and not pass out.

"If you have real bright sunshine I like to stay on the north side of the house. Sun is coming from the south and shines directly on the south side of the roof. If you stay on the north side it's not direct sun so it stays a little cooler, "Riley said.

"If (the job) is a long ways a way they start early to beat the heat. Drive in the dark to get there by daylight," Dale said.

The Van Dyke's estimate it's about 20 degrees hotter up here than it is on the ground. That's a big difference when it's already oppressive down here.

"I sweat a lot more. I guess as far as what I do differently? I drink a lot of water. It can be tough. Sometimes after a while water doesn't taste good so I drink Powerade," Riley said.

No matter what Mother Nature is cooking up they just power through to get the job done, a job they say is easier to take especially when the heat rises, as a family affair.
