For Sarasota roofing company, a big job with Publix - March 20, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Publix warehouse in Lakeland has a roof area larger than 10 football fields. Sutter Roofing of Sarasota began installing a thermoplastic system on the building in December. (Photo provided by Sutter Roofing)

SARASOTA - It's a job that, in these relatively slow times, roofers drool over: a space the size of 10 football fields.

Sutter Roofing of Sarasota is wrapping up work on the thermoplastic roof for a 600,000-square-foot warehouse owned by Publix in Lakeland.

The $2.5 million roofing effort was begun in December and is expected to be completed this month.

"The size of this project was massive, about 13 football fields of roof area and 100 truckloads of material," said Doug Sutter, the Sarasota company's president.

"The project is going great with the production and labor budgets both exceeding our expectations."

The roof is expected to be an "energy star" project and LEED-certified, a rating created and governed by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The roofing system is a thermoplastic roofing membrane that temporarily changes from a solid to a semi-solid state when heated sufficiently.

That allows sheets or panels that are overlapped to be fused together and return to a solid upon cooling, forming one continuous membrane.

Sutter, a fourth-generation commercial roofing company, has worked with Publix for more than 15 years.

Naperville Roofing Company, Opal Enterprises, Now a GAF Certified Green Roofer - March 16, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

NAPERVILLE, Ill., March 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Opal Enterprises, a Naperville roofing company, has recently received its certification as a 'Certified Green Roofer,' from GAF. GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America and this means customers can be confident that they're choosing a responsible Wheaton roofing company when they work with Opal Enterprises.

In order to be named as a certified green roofer, Opal Enterprises completed a number of different types of USGBC-approved training.

"It is vitally important that Opal cares about each step of the remodeling process. I hate that there are so many landfills being so quickly filled up. Construction debris has no place in the landfills," said Tara D. Opalski, Marketing Manager for Opal Enterprises (http://www.opalenterprises.net/).

Since becoming a certified green St. Charles roofing company, Opal Enterprises has recycled 217 tons of asphalt shingles. Opal Enterprises has ensured that the entire process happens completely within the Chicagoland area, which means the carbon footprint of the roofing project is reduced even further.

"We've recycled tons of shingles, but most people don't really understand just how many shingles this actually is -- it's the equivalent of over 540 cows! If you're in the Chicago area ask what a roofing company will do with the shingles. Looking for a company with a green certification to make sure your shingles aren't left filling a landfill is one the best things you can do to help protect our planet," said Opalski.

About Opal Enterprises: Opal Enterprises (http://www.opalenterprises.net/) is a remodeling company that is family owned and operated with the partnership of some very enriching employees. They have been installing windows, siding, and roofs for over 10 years. Located in Naperville, they are proud to serve the western suburbs of Chicago. Their niche is specific to better serve the homeowner in the needs of replacements and improvements of roofing, windows, doors, gutters and house siding in Lisle. Their focus is for their customers to have a pleasant experience while they tend to the end result of energy efficient beauty.

BBB warns of unfamiliar, out-of-state roofing companies - March 16, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

As Mid-State residents are beginning to make repairs to their homes that were damaged in the recent spring storms and tornados, the Better Business Bureau of Middle Tennessee is offering a warning to homeowners.

Since the devastating storms moved through the area nearly two weeks ago, "Storm Chasers" have flocked to Tennessee. With that in mind, the better BBB is urging all homeowners to be cautious when dealing with roofers, especially companies that may knock on your door that you have never dealt with before.

Don Kennedy is a long time Nashville roofing expert. He told Nashville's News 2 to always use caution when deciding on a roofing company.

"As soon as the storm hit, we got calls from roofing contractors from Texas, Colorado and Florida. They want to come in and sub-contract from us, and give us 10%," he explained.

Kennedy added, "They are not licensed or bonded, they come in and do the work under your company name, and they are in and out. It can be good money, but the problem is we are here to take care of the customer and we are left to take care of their botched up jobs. It gives us a bad reputation."

Kennedy took Nashville's News 2 Investigates to Green Hills on Thursday where he says many storm chasers have been knocking on doors searching for business.

"They know where the storm hit. We had a guy we did work for the day after, and he says he had 11 people knock on his door wanting to do a roof inspection, because he had roof damage," he said, adding, "Door to door salesman are not what they use to be. You don't know anything about them or their reputation. Nobody knows them. They try and manipulate the customer. "

As we ride down the street, we locate four signs for a roofing company out of Kansas.

The company has a good record with the BBB.

Infrared Imaging Revolutionizing Business at Roofing Southwest - March 14, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Advancements in Roofing Technology at Roofing Southwest

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) March 13, 2012

An infrared image might pick up such problems as missing insulation, moisture underneath roofing materials, energy leaks in the roofing system, and much more. Since infrared imaging is non-invasive, it is a more economic method of diagnosing problems than ripping up the roof to check for hidden damage or energy loss. This offers terrific advantages for roofing companies and property owners to not only catch problems that otherwise might have remained hidden, but also providing for a more sound, money-saving decision when deciding between repairing and maintaining, or completely tearing off and replacing the roof.

Another advantage to using infrared or thermographic imaging is for use with spray foam roofing materials. Spray foam typically seals tightly around vents, pipes and other roof penetrations. Because it is applied as a liquid (which expands during application), it forms a continuous, seamless, protective barrier. There are no seams or joints - the most common source of leaks in traditional roofs. A thermographic image taken after application can show any spots that might not have been covered properly and can be finished with a quick touch up application of foam.

Many states and government programs offer tax credits when home and business owners upgrade buildings to higher energy efficiency. Thermal scans of the roof are playing a big part in helping people save money particularly in larger commercial buildings, including apartments, hotels, casinos, schools, and industrial & retail complexes although homeowners can save substantial amounts as well. Studies have shown that upgrading buildings to more energy efficient products can save as much as 15 30% (or more) in utility costs in some cases. If youd like to know what tax credits are available in your state, you can visit the government website: http://energy.gov/savings.
