Mens Sheds meet at Nailsea Fire Station in Pound Lane once a month to enjoy shed-based activities while socialising.

The group is part of the Mens Sheds Association which was set up to encourage men to socialise and reduce isolation.

There are currently four members in the Nailsea branch, which provides a safe place for men to meet and talk about relevant issues, while working on shed-based projects or on the allotment.

Members are looking for unwanted work benches, tools, gardening implements, containers, old railway stock, wood or metal.

To donate to the cause or to find out more call Phill Wheatley on 07985 405777 or go along to the next meeting at the fire station on Monday from 3-4pm.

Hellertown residents refuse to remove sheds and shrubbery - September 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HELLERTOWN, Pa. -

A handful of Hellertown residents told Hellertown Borough Council Tuesday evening that they will not remove sheds and shrubbery in their backyards.

The residents approached council to express concern over recently being instructed they must remove sheds and shrubs on their property.

The homes are located along the Rails to Trail path.

Borough resident Richard Frankenfield said he found signs on his property on Front Street directing him to remove his shed and shrubs.

The residents also received a letter directing them to do the same, he said.

"We were told they [shed] would have to be moved within 60 days," he said. "We were very upset by this."

He also said inconsistencies exist between different properties. According to Frankenfield, newer property owners have been told their properties are fine.

Although Frankenfield's shed crosses over borough property, when he bought the property he was told extending past the line was fine.

"We keep getting different stories," he said. "We want to find out where this is going."

Fire that destroyed Exeter Township High School's sheds, football equipment suspicious, officials say - September 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    EXETER TWP., Pa. -

It was a hard hit off the field for the Exeter Township High School football team after some of their equipment was damaged by fire, which, police said, was intentionally set.

Two sheds near the football field were reduced to ashes, and some vandalism was also found at the high school.

"For them to do this to us is just hard to believe," said Blair Eckel, a freshman at the high school.

Orange fencing outlined the destruction Monday. The fire showed no mercy as flames tore through the sheds, leaving behind a charred frame.

"It was really bright," said Drew Eckel, who first saw the smoke then the flames at Don Thomas Stadium. "It was a substantial fire and I looked down and saw stuff on the field too so they must have thrown stuff on the field."

Eckel graduated this past spring and feared his old team's track equipment was inside, but police said football gear and soccer supplies were torched in the fire.

"There was obviously some people with an agenda on their mind. It was real disappointing," said Joe Strauss, whose kid goes to the high school.

The fire drew an army of firefighters from multiple departments around 11:45 p.m. Saturday. They managed to put it out in minutes, but the damage was done.

Police said they also found vinyl advertising signs sliced and cut around the stadium.

'Sick' thieves pulled heads off chickens at Tunbridge Wells… - August 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Comments(0)

THIEVES ransacked at least 22 sheds at the busiest allotments in Tunbridge Wells and left a trail of destruction which included six decapitated chickens.

It is believed they struck at Hawkenbury Allotments, off Halls Hole Road, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

They used bolt-cutters to break open the padlocked gate and drove their vehicle on site.

Then they raided scores of sheds, taking everything from lawnmowers and cans of diesel to rotavators and a workbench, and killed the chickens and even damaged a giant pumpkin.

Police spent hours on Saturday gathering information and collecting forensic evidence while allotment holders began counting the cost.

Janet Sturgis, chairman of Hawkenbury Allotment Holders' Association, told the Courier: "We have been in existence since 1895 and we have never had anything like this.

"It is sickening. It's the psychological feeling of being invaded. To do that to the hens they must be really horrible people.

"They were so unpleasant, they went into sheds and just pulled everything to the ground. Someone was growing a giant pumpkin for the association's autumn show on Saturday and they put the bolt cutter prongs into it. It was ruined.

"They left things in such a mess, so you knew they had been. They stole all the diesel for the mowers."

Ancient DNA Sheds New Light on Arctic's Earliest People - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The earliest people in the North American Arctic remained isolated from others in the region for millennia before vanishing around 700 years ago, a new genetic analysis shows. The study, published online Thursday, also reveals that today's Inuit and Native Americans of the Arctic are genetically distinct from the region's first settlers.

Inuit hunters in the Canadian Arctic have long told stories about a mysterious ancient people known as the Tunit, who once inhabited the far north. Tunit men, they recalled, possessed powerful magic and were strong enough to crush the neck of a walrus and singlehandedly haul the massive carcass home over the ice. Yet the stories described the Tunit as a reticent people who kept to themselves, avoiding contact with their neighbors.

Many researchers dismissed the tales as pure fiction, but a major new genetic study suggests that parts of these stories were based on actual events.

In a paper to be published Friday in Science, evolutionary geneticist Eske Willerslev and molecular biologist Maanasa Raghavan, both of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and their colleagues reveal for the first time that the earliest inhabitants of the Canadian Arctica group that archaeologists call the Paleo-Eskimoslived in isolation from their neighbors for nearly 4,000 years, refraining from any mixture with Native Americans to the south or with the ancestors of the modern Inuit.

"Elsewhere, as soon as people meet each other, they have sex," says Willerslev. "Even potentially different species like Neanderthals [and modern humans] had sex, so this finding is extremely surprising."

The new study also proposes a previously unknown migration. Research by other scientists has shown that the first Americans entered the New World at least 15,500 years ago, and that two smaller migrations of hunter-gatherers from Asia followed. The new study indicates that the Paleo-Eskimos entered the Arctic some 5,000 years ago, in a separate migration.

    Only One Woman?

Moreover, the team's analysis of the diversity in maternally inherited DNA in their samples suggests that these Paleo-Eskimo migrants included extremely few women. Indeed, it's possible there was just one adventurous female among the founding population. "I can't remember any other group having such low diversity," says Willerslev.

Geneticist and anthropologist Jennifer Raff, at the University of Texas, Austin, who was not a member of the team, thinks the new analysis is a major step forward in Arctic studies.

"This research has answered several important questions about North American Arctic prehistory," she says. The study now shows, for example, that the Paleo-Eskimos arrived separately from the ancestors of the Inuit, and remained genetically distinct.

Highwoods Sheds Richmond Office Assets, Gains $17.7 million – Analyst Blog - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Highwoods Properties Inc. ( HIW ) reaped $40.7 million in total proceeds and $17.7 million in gains from the sale of 11 multi-customer office buildings in Richmond in two separate deals. The asset sale comes as part of the company's strategy to shed its non-core, non-differentiating properties.

Spanning over 359,000 square feet and most of them single-storey, these properties were leased 90.6% on average. Presently, the company owns or has stake in 26 Richmond-based office properties, covering 2.3 million square feet and having an average occupancy rate of 95%.

As a matter of fact, Highwoods is making concerted efforts to expand its footprint in the high-growth markets through premium-assets acquisitions and developments. To support its growth needs, the company is disposing non-core assets and investing the proceeds for further expansions. Consequently, the company sold $103.4 million of non-core buildings, realizing a gain of $29.4 million year-to-date.

Such moves have helped the company to build a portfolio largely concentrated in the high-growth Sun Belt markets, which have long-term favorable demographic trends and are expected to drive above-average job growth.

Notably, after dampening results in the prior quarter, Highwoods repositioned itself on the winning track with encouraging second-quarter results. The company posted a positive earnings surprise of 9.6% on the back of higher revenue growth, a rise in occupancy rate and substantial leasing activity.

In particular, this real estate investment trust (REIT) declared funds from operations (FFO) of 80 cents per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 7 cents and the prior-year quarter figure by a dime.

Highwoods currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Investors interested in REITs may consider other stocks like, DCT Industrial Trust Inc. ( DCT ), Extra Space Storage Inc. ( EXR ) and Gladstone Commercial Corp. ( GOOD ). All these stocks have a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Note: FFO, a widely used metric to gauge the performance of REITs, is obtained after adding depreciation and amortization and other non-cash expenses to net income.
