'BAPs' TV show sheds different light on African-American experience in St. Louis - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BAPs, St. Louis latest foray into reality TV, is ready for its national debut.

The Lifetime series follows a group of affluent African-American friends over the course of six hour-long episodes beginning Wednesday.

The cast proclaims itself as BAPs or Black American Princesses and Princes, a description that has raised the ire of some potential viewers. (The show has no connection to the 1997 Halle Berry comedy B.A.P.S.)

Im a BAP, said cast member Anisha Morrell, 36, a public relations contractor and owner of KingMaker LLC. Sure I am. I own it. People say its elitist. But I dont want people to get disillusioned with the term BAP. Its a celebration for me.

Morrell and other cast members gave interviews this month at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, where the show had its world premiere.

Also there were Kristen Gipson Jones, 35, operations manager for several family-owned McDonalds; Gina Cheatham, 44, a marketing and business development consultant; and Jason Wilson, 41, owner of Chronicle Coffee and Northwest Coffee Roasting Co.

The show also features Brandon Williams, 36, a lawyer; Ra-ina Rai Rai Evans, 28, a biology major at the University of Missouri-St. Louis; Kendrick Evans, 37, founder of Redy Rock Enterprises; and Riccarda Lacey, 34, a television producer/development executive from Wildwood, now living in Los Angeles, who helped bring the show to fruition.

For Gipson Jones, being a BAP refers to someone who has the luxury of not having to worry about necessities and having access to resources and experiences that most people have not. Its about being well educated and well traveled, knowing what RSVP means and how to conduct yourself in certain situations.

She says the show is about upward mobility, success and hard work, but theres a flip side.

Most people think I havent had a lot of exposure to black people, or talk about how white I talk or dress, she said. I had to operate in multiple worlds and play to my audience. I had to learn to do that at a young age.

Street Name Confusion - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A report on a botched ambulance call sheds light on a confusing problem in Rockford--different streets with the same names.

The report reveals precious minutes were wasted as a gunshot victim lay dying, because of street name confusion.

As we first reported yesterday, the ambulance was dispatched to the 500-block of Pearl Street, but went to the 500 block of Pearl Avenue instead. That location is five miles off course.

As a result, 21-year-old Andrew Barth died from a chest wound.

"Within my ward I have a particular street called Forest View Avenue and Forest View Road, said Alderman of the 14th ward, Joseph Chiarelli.

So if so many people -- even ambulance drivers -- are confused, why haven't street names been changed?

Chiarelli said, I know from past history that the city wanted to address these similar names and same name roads and there was a big push back from the residents for not changing the names of the roads."

The city has implemented a strict policy for naming new roads to prevent confusion.

I can tell you today it's a very strict policy through the subdivision review, that many department heads look at the names of the streets when they're brought forward, said Chiarelli.

But as for changing existing street names -- that's a dead end.

Fair Dinkum seeks a new bloke - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Fair Dinkum Sheds steel-framed buildings franchise in the Wairarapa is seeking a new owner.

It operates under the name Affordable Sheds and makes barns, farm sheds, industrial warehouses and aircraft hangars.

Owner Alistair Bruce is retiring after 15 years ownership and Bayleys is calling for offers by August 7 for the business as a going concern along with the land and buildings.

The property at 278 Ngaumutawa Road, Masterton close to the Solway Showgrounds has a warehouse/office building of 220m2 plus a three bedroom home on 1.51ha.

    The site is zoned rural/residential.

A buyer may decide to move the business but a condition of the Fair Dinkum franchise arrangement is that it must be operated out of a Fair Dinkum display building.

The business operates with one contract manager, three site managers, seven carpenters/labourers and one office staff member.

Work completed within the Fair Dinkum Sheds franchise operation is managed by specific software with updates and support included with the franchise agreement.

Plant, fixtures and fittings associated with the business is included with the sale.

Recently-completed projects include Ormond Engineerings workshop and offices, Loader Constructions workshop, barn houses for private clients and commercial buildings for various local trusts.

Study Sheds Light on Marijuana and Paranoia - July 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

July 17, 2014 -- An in-depth investigation has concluded that people who smokemarijuanaare much more likely to have paranoia than people who don't use the drug.

The study also identifies psychological factors that can lead to feelings of paranoia in people exposed to the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, THC.

The team of researchers, led by Professor Daniel Freeman, PHD, of the University of Oxford, found that worrying, low self-esteem,anxiety,depression,and having a range of unsettling changes in perceptions most likely lead to the feelings of paranoia.

A paranoid person is someone who has an unfounded fear that others intend to harm them. Many people have some degree of paranoia. Those who are young, poor, in bad health, contemplating suicide, or using marijuana (also called cannabis) are more prone to have paranoid episodes.

The scientists set out to explore two things:

They tested 121 participants between the ages of 21 and 50. All of them had taken marijuana at least once before.

None of the participants had a history ofmental illness, and all were screened to rule out relevant health conditions. But all of those taking part said they'd felt paranoid at least once in the previous month.

The volunteers were not invited to smoke joints. Instead, the scientists injected some of them with THC in order to ensure the results were as accurate as possible.

Ultrafast X-Ray Laser Sheds New Light on Fundamental Ultrafast Dynamics - July 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Newswise MANHATTAN, Kansas Ultrafast X-ray laser research led by Kansas State University has provided scientists with a snapshot of a fundamental molecular phenomenon. The finding sheds new light on microscopic electron motion in molecules.

Artem Rudenko, assistant professor of physics and a member of the university's James R. Macdonald Laboratory; Daniel Rolles, currently a junior research group leader at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany, who will be joining the university's physics department in January 2015; and an international group of collaborators studied how an electron moves between different atoms in an exploding molecule.

Researchers measured at which distances between the two atoms the electron transfer can occur. Charge transfer processes particularly electron transfer are important for photosynthesis in solar cells, and drive many other important reactions in physics, chemistry and biology.

Their observation, "Imaging charge transfer in iodomethane upon x-ray photoabsorption," appears in the journal Science.

"There is a very fundamental question about how far an electron can go to reach the nearby atom in a molecule, and how probable that transition is," Rudenko said. "It has been difficult to capture images of this motion because of the very short times and very small distances that need to be measured."

To find the answer, scientists shot an ultrafast optical laser at iodomethane molecules molecules made of an iodine atom and a methyl group to break the bond of these two partners.

The molecules were hit with an intense, ultrashort X-ray pulse to strip the electrons from the inner shells of the iodine atom as well as to study the charge transfer between the fragments. The experiment was performed using the Linac Coherent Light Source, the world's most powerful X-ray laser. The laser is at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California and delivers femtosecond X-ray pulses. One femtosecond is one-millionth of a billionth of a second.

Researchers were able to see electrons jumping over surprisingly long distances up to 10 times the length of the original, intact molecule.
