XMM-Newton observatory has helped scientists to discover how the Universe's first stars ended their lives in giant explosions from the recent detection of a gamma-ray burst from a massive blue supergiant.

GRB 130925A, by contrast, produced gamma rays for 1.9 hours, more than a hundred times greater than a typical long GRB. Observations by Swift's XRT revealed an intense and highly variable X-ray afterglow that exhibited strong flares for six hours, after which it finally began the steady fadeout usually seen in long GRBs.

Ultra-long GRBs last hundreds of times longer; the source star must have a correspondingly greater physical size. The most likely suspect, astronomers say, was a blue supergiant, a hot star with about 20 times the Sun's mass that retains its deep hydrogen atmosphere, making it roughly 100 times the Sun's diameter.

Scientist Luigi Piro, the director of research at the Institute for Space Astrophysics said that one of the great challenges of modern astrophysics has been the quest to identify the first generation of stars to form in the universe, which they refer to as Population III stars.

He further added that this was the first time that they have detected this thermal cocoon component, likely because all other known ultra-long bursts occurred at greater distances.

The astronomers concluded that the best explanation for the unusual properties of GRB 130925A was that it heralded the death of a metal-poor blue supergiant, a model they suggested likely characterizes the entire ultra-long class.

Astronomers think Population III stars ended their lives as blue supergiants, so GRB 130925A might prove to be a valuable nearby analog to phenomena they might one day detect from the universe's most distant stars.

OTTAWA--Canada unexpectedly shed jobs in June and the unemployment rate climbed, as a surge of hiring in the construction sector was offset by the biggest decline in part-time jobs in nearly two years, Statistics Canada said Friday.

Employment in Canada fell 9,400 in June, versus market expectations for a gain of 20,000, according to economists at Royal Bank of Canada. The unemployment rate in June rose to 7.1% from the previous month's 7% reading, as more people searched for work. The consensus was for a 7%.

On a year-over-year basis, Canada added 72,300 jobs, for a meager advance of 0.4% -- which the data agency said marked the slowest annual rate of employment growth in over four years. On a per-month basis, Canada added roughly 6,000 jobs over the past 12 months to the end of June.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Looks like George Clooney owes Michelle Pfeiffer a lot of money.

The 52-year-old actor Hollywood's most determined bachelor, famous for a litany of fleeting loves has taken himself off the romantic market, even though he once bet Pfeiffer $100,000 that he'd never marry again.

After dating a string of actresses, models, a cocktail waitress and a former professional wrestler, Clooney recently proposed to 36-year-old international law attorney Amal Alamuddin despite repeated protestations that marriage wasn't for him.

"This fascination with my love life is really something," he told the British newspaper The Express earlier this year. "I keep saying I'll never get married again or have children, but people just don't want to believe me."

News of the engagement was announced by the human-rights law firm where Alamuddin works. Doughty Street Chambers said Monday its lawyers and staff "offer their best wishes and congratulations to Ms. Amal Alamuddin ... and Mr. George Clooney on their engagement to be married."

Alamuddin has advised former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Syria, helped ex-Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko challenge her imprisonment and represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as he fought extradition to Sweden.

Though they may seem like opposites, the pair, who were first photographed together late last year, have more in common than some might think.

Clooney has shown increasing interest in international affairs and human-rights issues, campaigning for a resolution to the conflict in Darfur and organizing a starry telethon to help Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. He's also hosted fundraisers for President Obama, and recently made headlines for defending the president during an argument with Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn.

So what about Alamuddin made Clooney decide to give up the single life? Specific details are unclear. But she certainly cuts a different swath from his previous public romances. Here's a partial list of loves Clooney left behind:
