Martelli sheds tears, gets last laugh - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK - You've seen Phil Martelli get angry, edgy, streetwise, sarcastic, proud. You've seen him happy.

This was different. As soon as his St. Joseph's Hawks won the Atlantic 10 tournament on Sunday, Martelli's chin started to quiver. He looked behind his team's bench, where his wife had already broken down in tears.

"I was trying to hold off," Martelli said later. "When I saw her and how emotional she was, I broke."

Did Judy Martelli often get full-on emotional like that after the big ones? She shook her head.

"This was different," she said after the Hawks found out they would play Connecticut on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA East Regional in Buffalo.

In tears on the court, Martelli was back to himself soon enough. When he found out St. Joe's was going to the same site as Villanova and would face the Wildcats if they both won in the first round, Martelli quipped: "I'll call Jay Wright. I'm sure they're flying whatever the biggest plane is . . . A 797. Maybe we can sit in the back."

Martelli said he hadn't seen UConn much. "I hear they have great women's basketball," he said with a little smile - Huskies women's coach Geno Auriemma is his buddy.

But as soon as St. Joe's beat VCU to become A-10 champ for the first time since 1997, Martelli lost it. A lot of things had hit him since the last season ended. He had lost a sister and a sister-in-law. A son had lost his job in the Mike Rice scandal at Rutgers.

Eagles recruit Xavier Ellis sheds fitness issues - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

West Coast recruit Xavier Ellis admits he was glad former coach John Worsfold wasn't around to challenge him to a race when he arrived for the AFL club's pre-season training.

Ellis struggled to maintain his elite fitness levels during his last three years at Hawthorn, with a myriad of foot, calf and knee injuries restricting him to just 16 games over that period.

The 2008 premiership midfielder secured a trade to West Coast at the end of last year, but he knew he was starting way behind others at the start of pre-season.

"I didn't come over in peak condition. I didn't play much footy for a couple of years, so I was a bit overweight, sloppy and a bit unfit," Ellis said.

"I remember Murray Newman losing a 2km (time trial) to John Worsfold (in 2012). He would have had me too.

"But I'm fit now. The fitness staff and doctors have been great."

If Ellis was a superstitious person, the injury-prone midfielder would have been a tad worried when he first arrived in Perth.

"I moved all my stuff over. Most of it broke on the train," he said with a laugh.

Lorry sheds its load near Ashcott - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lorry sheds its load near Ashcott

8:45pm Sunday 16th March 2014 in News By Newsdesk

FIRE crews were called to Ashcott today after containers from a lorry spilt black sludge all over the road.

The lorry had shed its load of containers on the A39 at around 3pm this afternoon (March 16).

A fire team from Street was sent to assess the situation and a Hazardous Materials Officer was also sent to try to identify the substance. Another fire crew from Glastonbury was sent for safety.

A fire service spokesman said: "Crews found four 1,000 litre containers which had split on impact and all four had spilled their contents onto the highway.

"A lamp post was also struck and damaged. Crews blocked nearby drains to prevent sludge entering water courses. The Environment Agency was informed and Police and Highways were on the scene.

"Four further containers were reported in the village of Ashcott. Two containers were leaking. Crews made this area safe also."

The substance is thought to be a waste product and not hazardous to health.

Secret sheds light on funding from Google Ventures, user statistics - March 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    20 mins ago Mar. 14, 2014 - 11:12 AM PDT

Secret has finally spoken up about that rumored funding round it had last week, clarifying the number and offering some pertinent user statistics for the 45-day-old app in a Medium post that went live Friday. The company confirmed that it raised$8.6 million from the likes of Google Ventures, Alexis Ohanian, Pete Cashmore and others a slightly lower number than the reported $10 million from last week. In addition, it noted two interesting facts:75 percent of people with more than five friends open the app daily, and 90 percent of users that engage in a conversation come back within the week.
