    The Mentalist sheds two original cast members - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    YouTube Videos Tweets Comments

    I cant say that I am surprised that The Mentalist has shed two of its original cast members. Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman have had their final episode with the series reports E Online. The two played Grace Van Pelt and Wayne Rigsby.

    I always thoughts that Van Pelt was there for noting more than eye candy, she rarely had the good story lines and over the last couple of season was relegated to nothing more than holding down the office. I never liked the character played by Yeoman.

    I am glad to see that Cho and the others continue on. I liked the original Mentalist premise, but I am glad to see them move on from Red John finally. The show is in danger of being cancelled if rumors are to be believed. I hope that doesn't happen, The Mentalist is a good show and is still fun to watch.

    The final episode with the two actors is called "White as the Driven Snow" and starts with Van Pelt kidnapped. Both characters made it out alive, which is to be expected. The show isnt really known for killing off main characters, Game of Thrones it is not. Rigsby was offered a job with the FBI, but turned it down and he and his wife head off into the sunset with the new baby to care for. I wonder if we will see any main characters go. It's nice to see the story line for Rigsby and Van Pelt wrapped up nicely rather than just left hanging.

    Zoners wary of shedding shed permits - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    A plan to allow small sheds to be built without a permit sparked a lengthy debate among planning and zoning commissioners.

    The proposal to amend the town zoning regulations stems from changes made to state building codes, which became effective on Feb. 28 and exempts several small structures, including sheds under 200 square feet and free-standing decks, from needing a building permits for one and two structures on a single property.

    In order to establish consistency with these recent code changes, this amendment expands the list in the zoning regulations for minor accessory structures that are also to be exempted from the need of a zoning permit, reads the proposed amendment.

    Minor accessory structures previously included walls and fences, as well as dog houses and bird baths.

    Richard Baldelli, the towns zoning enforcement officer, voiced concern in a March 5 letter to Town Planner Betty Brosius highlighting that several of the exempt items do require a zoning permit in Ridgefield making the towns regulations out of step with the states.

    He suggested that the town exempt some structures from requiring a permit, including:

    One-story detached accessory structures used as tool and storage sheds, playhouse and similar uses, provided the floor area does not exceed 200 square feet;

    Prefabricated swimming pools that are equal to or less than 24 inches deep;

    Swings, non-habitable tree houses and other playground equipment;

    Decks not exceeding 200 square feet that are more than 30 inches high and are not attached to a dwelling.

    Hooper fire destroys shed, spreads to neighboring structures - March 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    A fire in Hooper started in a utility shed, then burned through multiple structures and one acre of land on Monday, March 17, 2014.

    Weber Fire District

    HOOPER, Weber County About 20 firefighters from three departments responded Monday to a fire in Hooper that destroyed several structures.

    The fire originated at a utility shed at 4156 S. 5900 West at 1:16 p.m. Due to high-speed winds, the fire spread "rapidly and intensely" to neighboring sheds and two camp trailers, according to Weber Fire Marshal Brandon Thueson.

    The property owner said she got a "frantic" knock on the door from a man who shouted that her shed was on fire. The woman then tried to rescue a dog that was locked in a dog kennel between two sheds. She was unsuccessful in saving the dog and subsequently suffered from smoke inhalation, Thueson said.

    The fire was driven east and burned one acre of land before firefighters from Weber, Roy and Riverdale fire departments were able to control the blaze.

    The woman's home was not damaged by the fire.

    Firefighters planned to remain on the scene throughout the night to monitor hot spots. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

    Forum at Tuskegee University sheds light on economic inequality - March 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA) -

    Economists say one of the most serious problems are country is facing is economic inequality- the widening gap between the rich and middle and lower classes.

    The topic steered talks at Tuskegee University during a three-day economic forum that brought together nationally recognized speakers in economics, finance and business.

    Panel discussions covered America's economic outlook and inequalities.

    "One of the interesting things about the recent economic recovery from the worst recession we've had since the Great Depression is that 95% of the growth in income since the recovery began in 2009, has gone to the top 10% of income earners, the rich in the United States," saidDr. Bernard E. Anderson, Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and vice chair of the Tuskegee University Board of Trustees.

    The big gap in American's income is hindering economic growth. Narrowing it, experts say, is the key to improving areas like job creation, consumer spending, business investments and exports.

    The issue was one Dr. Andrew Brimmer worked to tackle. Brimmer was the first African American to serve on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve Bank and a longtime member of the Tuskegee University Board of Trustees. The Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science at Tuskegee University was named after him and the economic forum was dedicated to him.

    Brimmer passed away in 2012 and his daughter says it was an honor to see the university paying tribute to his work as one of the nation's leading economists.

    "It's so exciting today to see scholars today from across the United States addressing the issues of economic empowerment and inequality that he cared so much about during his lifetime. It has been truly a remarkable day," Dr. Esther Brimmer said of her father and the forum. She works as a professor of international affairs at George Washington University.

    Survey sheds new light on alumni opinions - March 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    In the years after the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case shook the university, 74 percent of alumni said they think Penn State is going in the right direction.

    More than 1,200 Penn State alumni gave their opinions on a wide range of Penn State topics in their third survey done by the Penn State Alumni Association released in January 2014.

    The Penn State Alumni Association worked with the research firm StrategyOne for the survey, for which they polled random alumni members both in and out of the association on university subjects, including overall satisfaction with their Penn State experience, feelings of Penn State today, reasoning behind grievances with the university and likelihood of recommending Penn State to prospective undergraduates.

    Communications Director for the Penn State Alumni Association Amy Caputo said the alumni surveys are done periodically, and research is routinely conducted over a period of about 18 months.

    According to the survey, notable points and percentages include the number of alumni who feel positively toward Penn State, shifting from 81 percent to 86 percent.

    It also asked peoples opinions on how Penn State has handled the events of the last few years. Twenty-nine percent thought the university handled events mostly right, 20 percent completely wrong and 51 percent had mixed opinions.

    The overall opinion on what alumni think should be the top priorities of President-elect Eric Barron are academics, building the universitys reputation and affordability.

    Executive Director for the Alumni Association Roger Williams said he was pleasantly surprised by some of the survey results, such as the opinions on a new question on the survey regarding the direction Penn State is going in.

    The total that say [we are going in the] right direction is 74 percent, as opposed to totally wrong track of 6 percent, and I thought that was a pretty good indication that most of our alumni think Penn State is heading in the right direction, Williams said. Alumni have a lot of faith and confidence and love for the institution, and satisfaction with their education has been expressed.

    Penn State Board of Trustees member Anthony Lubrano said some of the concern in the survey lies with alumni opinion of the board.
