A GROUP of artists are searching for people with memories of war painter Stanley Spencer from during his spell in Port Glasgow.
RESEARCH: Alec Galloway.
A GROUP of artists are searching for people with memories of war painter Stanley Spencer from during his spell in Port Glasgow.
Absent Voices, a creative project set up primarily to celebrate Greenocks historic sugar sheds, want to speak to people who have recollections of the great artist.
Their research is part of a huge project aimed at celebrating the areas rich industrial heritage and bringing the iconic sheds back to life in the 21st century.
The group of artists involved are also hoping to track down anyone who met painter Joan Eardley.
Lead artist Alec Galloway, whose father worked in the sugar industry, said: This project is about recalling just how massive the industry was, and how important it was in the development of Greenock as a town.
If you walk around Inverclyde today, there is virtually no evidence of Greenocks past as a major player on the world sugar stage.
Many people who walk down Jamaica or Virginia Street today will be unaware of the significance of these street names.

But they weren't tears of sadness or despair.
No, Carolyn Foreman shed those tears two days earlier, on Christmas morning, as her Kentwood duplex went up in flames. On Friday, there was only joy as she stood in happy disbelief.

Firefighters arrived at her sister's home where she is staying with her three children and handed out armloads of presents provided by Toys for Tots. There was a Nerf football, a nail polish variety pack. A Twister game and a digital camera.
For this family, Christmas wasn't over yet. The sadness they felt in watching their belongings burn won't be the only memory this holiday season.
"I'm so overwhelmed," Foreman said, looking on as her three children, Charles Caldwell, 11; Richard Caldwell, 14; and Tanajah Hawkins, 16 were handed gift after gift. "You are awesome. You all are awesome."
Foreman awoke Christmas morning to fire above the ceiling of the duplex she shares with her children on Innwood Drive SE in Kentwood. She had little time to react, other than to rush them out of the home.
The family had just opened presents the night before, on Christmas Eve. The new gifts were all inside.
Firefighters went out of their way to find $300 in cash Richard Caldwell had been given, while also battling the flames. The fire moved from insulation through the empty spaces above the ceiling.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
The death of a homeless Alabama man on Christmas Eve due to extremely cold temperatures is highlighting what local shelters are doing in the battle to protect the homeless in our area from potentially life-threatening situations.
Ronald Smith, the director of the Friendship Mission in Montgomery, says freezing temperatures are a constant threat to those living on the street.
"It's dangerous- very dangerous. By the time you think that you've got it covered, the cold has snuck up on you and you really can't do anything for yourself and then hypothermia sets in. Then it's too late," he said.
On Christmas Eve in downtown Birmingham, a 56-year-old homeless mandied of accidental hypothermia as temperatures dipped to 26 degrees.
AL.com reports that 56-year-old Kerry Washington was found on the 400 block of 1st Street South at 7:40 a.m. He was semi-conscious. Washington was taken to UAB Hospital but he died two hours later.
It's exactly what local shelters work to prevent. This week, we've seen temperatures dip below freezing several nights. On Christmas Eve, the lowest temperature was 29 degrees and on Christmas Day, it was 25. On Thursday night, temperatures were expected to be in the low to mid 30s.
The Friendship Mission on Mobile Highway and the Salvation Army on Maxwell Boulevard are seeing an influx of guests trying to escape the frigid weather.
"Here at the Salvation Army in Montgomery, we do have a cold night which any night the temperature gets to 35 or below, we get those individuals that are on the street out of the cold, set them up and give them a safe place to stay, give them a hot meal, warm place to sleep and shower. That's the least we can do," said Jason Davis, Program Director. "We'll probably see about 65 men, 10-15 women and then we'll also have three or four families in so they are utilizing our program. We are glad we can help them."
"On any given cold night, we always leave our doors open and we house as many as we can. We try to get it out to the streets that we are open, we are available, that you can come and have a good hot meal, that you can rest," Ronald Smith added about the Friendship Mission.

PanARMENIAN.Net - Mark Wahlberg sheds more lights on what to expect from his upcoming action film "Transformers: Age of Extinction", AceShowbiz reported. The "Lone Survivor" actor says to the Daily Beast that the fourth movie will be more emotional and reveals the background story of his character in the process.
"He'd had a child when he was in high school and his wife passed away, and the promise he'd made to her was that she wouldn't date any boys until she graduated and that she'd be at the graduation - because we weren't due to the pregnancy. So there's an anchor to it and a realness to it that I like a lot."
"It was a tighter script, and its own stand-alone thing. I think the emotional core of it, the human element, is going to be extremely powerful. It's an ordinary man trying to do extraordinary things to save his daughter and keep her alive - and this boyfriend he didn't know anything about," he says.
Director Michael Bay did once say that the new film will be less goofy. "I wanted the first Transformers to be very suburban and less cool," he explained. "This is a much more cinematic one. I focused on keeping this one slick. There won't be any goofiness in this one. We went a bit too goofy [on the last one]."
The film is due on June 27, 2014 in 3D. In the upcoming fourth installment, Earth is scarred by the events of the past three movies but is moving on after all the giant robots disappeared.
Wahlberg plays Cade Yeager, an inventor, who discovers a buried Transformer which sets the stage for the return of the rest of the Transformers. Nicola Peltz plays his on-screen daughter, Jack Reynor portrays her boyfriend, while Kelsey Grammer is tapped to take on the villainous role.
