THURSDAY, Dec. 12, 2013 (HealthDay News) -- Another code within DNA has been discovered by scientists -- a finding that the researchers say sheds light on how changes to DNA affect health.

Since the genetic code was first deciphered in the 1960s, scientists have believed it was used solely to write information about proteins. But this new study from University of Washington scientists found that genomes use the genetic code to write two separate languages.

One language describes how proteins are made, and the other helps direct genetic activity in cells. One language is written on top of the other, which is why this other language went undiscovered for so long, according to the report in the Dec. 13 issue of Science.

"For over 40 years, we have assumed that DNA changes affecting the genetic code solely impact how proteins are made," team leader Dr. John Stamatoyannopoulos, an associate professor of genome sciences and of medicine, said in a university news release.

"Now we know that this basic assumption about reading the human genome missed half of the picture," he said.

This other code may be where diseases can develop, when the more complicated job of regulating how genes are expressed in cells goes awry, the study authors suggested. The finding could have a significant impact on how scientists and doctors interpret a patient's genetic code and lead to new ways to diagnose and treat health problems, the researchers said.

"The fact that the genetic code can simultaneously write two kinds of information means that many DNA changes that appear to alter protein sequences may actually cause disease by disrupting gene control programs or even both mechanisms simultaneously," Stamatoyannopoulos explained in the news release.

Scientists discover another genetic code

HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- WZZM 13 is learning new details about the business that was targeted by an FBI raid from a former employee.

On Wednesday, FBI agents entered Thermotron Industries on Kollen Park Drive and put the building on lockdown. The former employee explained more about what the company sells, who it sells to, and why it might be causing concerns.

Few words are coming from Thermotron Industries, a day after the FBI raided the building. However former employee Mark McFarland has plenty to talk about, after working for eight years with the company until 1992.

"I kind of went 'Wow, what happened there?' We were the best in the world at what we did," said McFarland.

WZZM 13 asked McFarland if he ever witnessed anything like the FBI raid on Wednesday. "Never, when I worked there and I still have friends that work there."

According to Thermotron's website, the company sells high tech chambers that test the durability of a product in a variety of circumstances, including high altitude and extreme temperature.

"We built a chamber once that fit a whole tank in, and then they can simulate all kinds of weather," explained McFarland.

Thermotron sells products to 40 countries around the world. A source tells WZZM 13 that the FBI raid was in connection to a national security concern.

Thanks to NASAs Cassini spacecraft, astronomers are gaining new insights into Saturns moon Titan, particularly when it comes to its hydrocarbon lakes and seas.

According to the US space agency, Titan is one of the most Earth-like entities in the entire solar system. Besides our planet, the moon is the only other place in the Milky Way that has stable liquid on its surface.

Cassinis recent close flybys are bringing into sharper focus a region in Titans northern hemisphere that sparkles with almost all of the moons seas and lakes, NASA said. Scientists working with the spacecrafts radar instrument have put together the most detailed multi-image mosaic of that region to date.

The image includes all the seas and most of the major lakes. Some of the flybys tracked over areas that previously were seen at a different angle, so researchers have been able to create a flyover of the area around Titans largest and second largest seas, known as Kraken Mare and Ligeia Mare, and some of the nearby lakes, the agency noted, adding that the majority of the liquid in the moons seas and lakes is methane and ethane.

A colorized movie produced using data obtained by the probes radar instrument from 2004 through 2013 shows Titans north pole at the center, and extends down to 50 degrees northern latitude. In the video, liquids are either black or blue, based on the way the radar bounced off the surface, while land appears yellow to white.

The largest sea, Kraken Mare, is the black-and-blue area sprawling from below and to the right of the north pole down to the bottom right, the agency said. The second largest sea, Ligeia mare, is a roughly heart-shaped entity located to the left of and just above the north pole. Punga Mare is located just below the north pole.
