Idea to revamp Bridgwater’s ‘Carnival City’ welcomed - December 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Idea to revamp Bridgwater's 'Carnival City' welcomed

11:04am Thursday 19th December 2013 in News By Kirsty James

CARNIVAL clubs in Bridgwater could benefit from brand new carnival sheds and a dedicated carnival museum.

The ideas were featured in a master plan by Sedgemoor District Council to regenerate land to the east of the A38, which includes 'Carnival City'.

The report describes the current carnival sheds as substandard and adds replacement with simple new sheds would enhance the reputation of the carnival as a world leading event.

Nick Tait, Team Leader for Planning Policy at SDC, told the Mercury the council will be undertaking extensive consultation with the carnival clubs over the next few weeks.

He added: We're not going to do anything they don't want. This is about talking to the people who know carnival the best and finding out what works for them.

There's a lot of secrecy surrounding carnival and the clubs may not be comfortable with a site that can be accessed by the public.

Mr Tait said the carnival committee had expressed interest in finding a larger premises for a carnival museum to house larger exhibits and that this could be considered for the same site.

The idea would be to keep the carnival sheds in the same area, but improve the layout for better access and to free up excess land for development.

The origin of flowers: DNA of storied plant provides insight into the evolution of flowering plants - December 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The newly sequenced genome of the Amborella plant addresses Darwin's "abominable mystery" -- the question of why flowers suddenly proliferated on Earth millions of years ago. The genome sequence sheds new light on a major event in the history of life on Earth: the origin of flowering plants, including all major food crop species. On 20 December 2013, a paper by the Amborella Genome Sequencing Project that includes a full description of the analyses performed by the project, as well as implications for flowering plant research, will be published in the journal Science. The paper is among three on different research areas related to the Amborella genome that will be published in the same issue of the journal.

Amborella (Amborella trichopoda) is unique as the sole survivor of an ancient evolutionary lineage that traces back to the last common ancestor of all flowering plants. The plant is a small understory tree found only on the main island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. An effort to decipher the Amborella genome -- led by scientists at Penn State University, the University at Buffalo, the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, and the University of California-Riverside -- is uncovering evidence for the evolutionary processes that paved the way for the amazing diversity of the more than 300,000 flowering plant species we enjoy today.

This unique heritage gives Amborella a special role in the study of flowering plants. "In the same way that the genome sequence of the platypus -- a survivor of an ancient lineage -- can help us study the evolution of all mammals, the genome sequence of Amborella can help us learn about the evolution of all flowers," said Victor Albert of the University at Buffalo.

Scientists who sequenced the Amborella genome say that it provides conclusive evidence that the ancestor of all flowering plants, including Amborella, evolved following a "genome doubling event" that occurred about 200 million years ago. Some duplicated genes were lost over time but others took on new functions, including contributions to the development of floral organs.

"Genome doubling may, therefore, offer an explanation to Darwin's "abominable mystery" -- the apparently abrupt proliferation of new species of flowering plants in fossil records dating to the Cretaceous period," said Claude dePamphilis of Penn State University. "Generations of scientists have worked to solve this puzzle," he added.

Comparative analyses of the Amborella genome are already providing scientists with a new perspective on the genetic origins of important traits in all flowering plants -- including all major food crop species. "Because of Amborella's pivotal phylogenetic position, it is an evolutionary reference genome that allows us to better understand genome changes in those flowering plants that evolved later, including genome evolution of our many crop plants -- hence, it will be essential for crop improvement," stressed Doug Soltis of the University of Florida.

As another example of the value of the Amborella genome, Joshua Der at Penn State noted "We estimate that at least 14,000 protein-coding genes existed in the last common ancestor of all flowering plants. Many of these genes are unique to flowering plants, and many are known to be important for producing the flower as well as other structures and other processes specific to flowering plants."

Angry protest over chicken sheds plan - December 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

MOTORISTS at Presteigne were being urged to honk their horns and show their support for objectors to a planning application for two huge chicken sheds for 80,000 birds right next to ancient Broadheath Common.

Regarded as Presteignes official village green where residents enjoy the open space and the venue for the annual trotting races that have been held there for centuries, protest posters have been going up and objections pouring in.

Powys County Council planners in Llandrindod Wells were due to consider the application last Thursday, with an officer recommendation to refuse because of the adverse effects of the location and scale of the development.

But objectors felt they could not let up the battle saying that the sprawling broiler chicken facility could mean foul odours and toxic dust wafting across Presteigne.

Andrea and Steve Jude, owners of the important Clough Williams-Ellis designed Cadw registered Broad-heath House and Historic Garden said: Our plans to reopen these beautiful gardens to the public will be a waste of time if this monstrosity is passed.

How can we promote the gardens and get visitors if the area is surrounded by the disgusting stink that these places always make and if heavy lorries are trundling up and down this road night and day?

Steve also has severe asthma and he says that the dust coming from spreading the tons of poisonous muck around from so many birds could seriously jeopardise his health.

The planning application states that all the manure and bedding will be regularly spread across the fields belonging to the applicant, all of which surround the east of the town of Presteigne and Broadheaths houses, objectors point out.

Wendy Toomey, owner of the historic drovers inn the Cat and Fiddle, joint owner of a cycle business in Presteigne and a member of the Chamber of Trade, said: This inappropriate development will damage the unique historic environment and undermine our fragile but growing tourist economy.

The proposal says there will be one new job created, but with the dreadful smell, masses of extra HGV traffic and continual noise and vibration from the plants high velocity extractors, the visitors just wont want to come here and that could have a devastating impact on the local economy and jobs.

Kite-surfing equipment, power tools and quad bike among items stolen from sheds in Braunton area - December 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Comments(0)

Kite-surfing equipment, power tools and a quad bike are just a few of the items stolen from sheds and outbuildings in the Braunton area over the last week.

Police are appealing for witnesses following five burglaries in the last seven days.

Officers said diesel was siphoned from tractors and stolen from other containers at a property in Boode overnight on December 11.

They also said a quad bike was stolen from a shed in Guineaford overnight on December 15 and said kite-surfing equipment was stolen from a shed in Wrafton Road between December 16 and December 18.

Power tools were also taken from two separate sheds in the Ashford area overnight on December 17.

Sergeant Paul Jones, neighbourhood team leader for Ilfracombe and Braunton, said the thefts, which have mostly occurred overnight, may not be linked.

He said: We are appealing for any sightings of unusual vehicles or people acting suspiciously in areas they are not normally expected to be.

I also want to remind people to keep their outbuildings and sheds safely locked and secured.

Anyone who witnessed the burglaries or has any information should contact police on 101, quoting crime reference number CN/13/481.
