Study sheds light on adoption trends - October 30, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Study sheds light on adoption trends

    Thursday, October 31, 2013

International adoption is moving from a robust but largely unmonitored process towards a smaller but better regulated system.

The study included surveys of 1,500 adoptive parents and adoption professionals in sending and receiving countries, as well as interviews with senior policymakers in 19 nations including Ireland. It found that the international implementation of the Hague Convention has resulted in an increase in legal, safe, and appropriate adoptions for children for whom no permanent options exist to be raised in families.

    The study found:

    * More children are remaining institutionalised for longer periods, increasing the effects of institutionalisation;

    * An increasing awareness and engagement in international open adoption where some form of contact remains between the natural and adoptive families:

    * Many countries of origin, including the largest ones such as China, are increasingly allowing the inter-country adoption primarily or exclusively of children with special needs.

Adam Pertman, the president of the Donaldson Adoption Institute, said the policies of countries involved in adoption need to reflect current rather than past trends.

The unfortunate reality is that too many current policies and practices do not adequately address the fast-changing realities of international adoption.

Paul Hollywood Admits He Sheds The Pounds When Filming 'The Great British Bake Off' As He Gets So Stressed - October 30, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

You'd think with all those cakes, pies and sweet treats that Paul Hollywood would pile on the pounds while he films 'The Great British Bake Off' but it's quite the opposite according to the star

Despite the culinary temptations on offer, Paul has admitted he actually sheds the weight - thanks to stress.

The fourth series of 'Bake Off', judged by Hollywood and Mary Berry, attracted record ratings.

But Hollywood did not enjoy the same success in the US, where 'The American Baking Competition', broadcast this summer, was axed due to poor ratings.

The 47-year-old told the Radio Times: "I stress out. I've lost a stone and a bit in the past eight months just through work."

The baker, who left his wife of 15 years Alexandra, 49, earlier this year, said he does not deliberately watch his weight but he is careful about what he eats in the evenings.

"I tend to eat more in the day. In the evening I drink lots of water and try not to eat anything heavy after six o'clock," he said.

Hollywood's 'Bake Off' colleague Mel Giedroyc, who hosts the contest with fellow comic Sue Perkins, has said she puts on weight every year when she presents the BBC2 show, which is moving to BBC1 next year.

"I've put on a good 11lb every series. The first couple of episodes it's 'No thank you, not for me'. Cut to the semi-final and we're hoofing up whole quiches," she has admitted.

Jeff Kennett reiterates his love of Men's Sheds - October 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Oct. 28, 2013, 9 p.m.

JEFF Kennett has lauded Mens Sheds as one of the most important initiatives in mens mental health of the 21st century.

The beyondblue chairman and former Victorian premier yesterday addressed the Australian Mens Shed Association national conference held in Ballarat.

About 340 registered attendees listened to the key note address from Mr Kennett, who spoke in support of Mens Sheds and the positive impact on male health and well-being.

Mr Kennett said there had been a big turnaround in recent years of men seeking help when they were having problems.

Not that long ago no-one was talking about mens health. Men were ashamed to do it, we kept it to ourselves, he said.

We became more stressed, we became more anxious. Two-thirds of all suicides are undertaken by men.

He credited Mens Sheds with helping prompt more men to speak out about what was happening in their lives.

I think the coming together of Mens Sheds is probably the most profound initiative that has taken place so far this century, in terms of mens mental health, he said.

In his opening address, Australian Mens Shed Association executive officer David Helmers said the organisation was lobbying for government and corporate funds.

Beyondblue report: Men's sheds work - October 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Oct. 27, 2013, 9:30 p.m.

MENS sheds work. That is the key finding of a formal study to be unveiled by beyondblue chairman Jeff Kennett at the Australian Mens Shed Association Conference in Ballarat today.

Since the establishment of the Australian Mens Shed Association in 2007 the number of Mens Sheds across Australia has grown from about 150 to more than 1000.

While the detail of the beyondblue report is yet to be released, Australian Mens Shed Association executive officer David Helmers yesterday revealed those workshops and meeting places that have been set up as a haven for men to meet, work and interact, provide measurable physical and mental benefits for their patrons.

Mr Helmers said he did not need to read a report to know that mens sheds help men overcome isolation and loneliness: he sees the evidence every day. However the report would illustrate to others the important role the sheds play in their communities, and the value for governments in funding further sheds.

The initial data is very encouraging. We always knew the benefits (of mens sheds) because we se it but the beyondblue commissioned quantitative research to show it.

The need has always been there. I dont necessarily think things are getting worse but (the report) shows mens sheds are a great way to deal with the isolation a lot of men feel when they stop work.

Sheds are about preventative health. According to the World Health Organisation social isolation is a major health determinant. If you asked 100 people at mens sheds what they would be doing if it werent for their shed, they might be at the pub drinking and smoking, or they might be alone, or they might not be here at all.

Todays conference at the Ballarat Lodge is the first biennial conference to be held outside a state capital city.

Given that most mens sheds are outside the major metropolitan centres, Mr Helmers said Ballarat was an appropriate location for the 2013 conference.
