Search warrant sheds new light in case of missing student, Jessica Benson - September 10, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Posted on: 7:58 pm, September 9, 2013, by Katie DeLong and Jeremy Ross, updated on: 10:28pm, September 9, 2013

MILWAUKEE (WITI) FOX6 News is learning more about two cases that may be connected. The first, the case of a missing college student. 22-year-old Jessica Benson has been missing since May. The second: A robbery at Bensons workplace, Educators Credit Union just days before she disappeared.

A search warrant just unsealed sheds new light on law enforcements investigation into the robbery, and Bensons disappearance.

Benson hasnt been seen since May of 2013, when she called in sick to work and seemingly disappeared just days before her graduation from Mount Mary University.

A search warrant details how investigators focused on Bensons handwriting, searching Bensons personal belongings in her dorm room, inside Carolyn Hall at Mount Mary. There, according to the search warrant, officials recovered items including Bensons notes and school binders.

This, after the Educators Credit Union on Appleton Avenue was robbed on May 7th.

The robbery was captured on surveillance video. A man is seen passing a note that included words used by credit union employees. Law enforcement officials believe there were similarities in the writing between the piece of evidence and what was found in Bensons dorm room.

Benson disappeared days before her college graduation and, coincidentally, just after her workplace was robbed.Initially, her sister, Judith Beyer, though Benson was missing or kidnapped. In fact, Bensons friends and family had come together to pray for her safe return.

However, court documents and a Milwaukee police search warrant released back in June insinuated that Benson was not kidnapped but rather involved in the robbery that occurred at her work just before she disappeared.

And now, Bensons sister, Judith Beyer, is not sure what to believe. According to her, Benson had nothing to worry about. She worked at the Credit Union for six years, had no criminal record and was about to graduate from college.

Manila to erect Wi-fi ready waiting sheds - September 8, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Manila: The local government of Manila has approved a project to establish 12 wi-fi ready modern waiting sheds where commuters can use their mobile phones, surf the web, and check emails while waiting for vehicles, most of which are jeepneys, a local and longer version of the United States World War II vintage military vehicle.

Commuters, including students from Manilas university belt, government and private office workers, and tourist spots will have Internet access while commuting, said a statement from Manilas City Hall.

The plan is to follow the example of Singapore where every spot has Internet access, said a source who was part of the projects planning committee.

Establishing comfortable, modern, and state of the art waiting sheds is a must project in Manila, said the same source who requested for anonymity.

Manila, an old and historical city, which is graced by the Manila Bay, is fashioning itself as a major tourist spot.

However, its waiting sheds are not yet modern; many of them are already dilapidated.

At the same time, Manila has lagged behind Makati City, the financial district, because it has not yet designated separate waiting sheds for loading and unloading, making travel on its major roads quite chaotic.

Being one of the most congested metro areas in the Philippines, observers have started questioning the practicality of offering Internet access to mobile phone users while commuting on Manilas busy roads.

Manilas pickpockets have been discouraging mobile owners to openly use their gadgets while on the road, said Ana Guzman, who works in one of the five-star hotels that dot Manilas Roxas Boulevard, across Manila Bay.

Internet connection is tempting for any mobile phone user, but in Manila, it would be a very dangerous temptation, said Guzman.

Why wi-fi in Manila’s waiting sheds won’t work - September 7, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Weve repeatedly cited in the past that people in the Philippines, especially those in Metro Manila, arehuge adopters of new gadgets such as smartphones and tablets. Plus, they consider their mobile devices their most important pieces of technology. It also follows that the people would be very inclined to access the internet through their devices.

In line with this trend, the local government of Manilaannounced its rather ambitious project of installing wi-fi at waiting sheds in the capital. For a start, 12 innovative waiting sheds will be spread across the city. Whether it looks to construct brand new waiting sheds altogether or simply equip the old and rusty waiting sheds with wi-fi is unclear.

Prior to this, some buses have been prohibited from entering the city, which caused the city government to create additional loading and unloading areas and more inconvenient stops for some commuters. Now, putting up wi-fi connections at waiting sheds seems to be its new action to offer commuters. The idea is to allow the commuters to access the internet while waiting for buses or jeepneys.

Providing free wi-fi access sounds awesome. But doing so out in the open, in the streets of Manila, just wont work. For one, only a few courageous people will even dare to pull their phones from their pockets. Why? Because whether the government admits it or not, a huge number of snatchers and pickpockets are scattered around the city.

The commuters who succumb to the available internet connection will simply risk losing their phones, or worse, risk their own safety. As Filipinos know, bad guys will use any means to snatch peoples things. They might carry guns or knives in case their culprits fight back. Looking at the scenario this way, it could bring about higher crime rates in Manila.

I think this goes the same for other cities in the metropolitan area. Manila is still far from neighboring countries like Singapore, where people can practically pull out their phones in public places or while walking on the streets. Sure, free wi-fi access is cool, but before such a thing could work in Manila, I believe the government should strengthen its efforts to catch the bad guys in the city, which could take a while.

Manila eyes Wi-Fi-ready waiting sheds - September 7, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANILA, PhilippinesWaiting sheds equipped with free Wi-Fi service and solar-powered streetlights will soon be installed in Manila, in line with the local governments revival plans for the city.

Vice Mayor Francisco Isko Moreno Domagoso earlier this week said a private company would shoulder the cost of the Internet connection and the building of waiting sheds at designated bus stops.

On Friday, Mayor Joseph Estrada signed a memorandum of agreement with Global Gold Goal Inc., represented by its president and chief executive officer Frederick Ordoez, for the donation of almost 10,000 solar-powered LED streetlights worth P2.2 billion.

These projects are timely because the city has no funds. The private companies will build these at no cost to the city and yet the people will benefit, Estrada said.

The city is billed around P18 million monthly for the streetlights power supply alone, an amount which Estrada said could be reduced with the installation of solar-powered lamps. City Hall expects them to cover Manilas six districts in three phases within two years.

Both the waiting sheds and streetlights will be fitted with monitoring cameras, as well as LED signboards for advertisements.
