Cars and sheds broken into during overnight crime spree in Swanage

THIEVES targeted cars, garages and sheds in a one-night spree in Swanage this week.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crimes which occurred in Accord Road, Queens Road, Manor Road, Russell Avenue and Stafford Road between 5pm on Tuesday, May 7 and 7.30am on Wednesday, May 8.

Purbeck Police Constable Simon Colvin said a prowler was disturbed on Manor Road at around 12.20am on Wednesday, described as a white man in his 20s, about five feet nine inches tall, of slight build with short dark hair, wearing a body warmer and a dark coloured fleece.

He added: Later that morning, at approximately 2.20am, offenders were disturbed while breaking into a vehicle on Bon Accord Road. They ran away and dropped a bag of stolen property which was recovered. There are no descriptions apart from that one was wearing a hat.

I am appealing for anyone who witnessed these incidents or recalls any suspicious activity in the area to contact Dorset Police.

Mangalore, May 7:

New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has begun the work on the construction of two additional storage sheds in the port premises.

A press release by NMPT said here on Tuesday that the work on the construction of two additional storage sheds near the berths has been taken up at a cost of Rs 9 crore.

With a built-up area of 7000 sq metres, these sheds could store up to 22,000 tonnes of bulk cargoes such as maize, wheat and fertiliser. The sheds will be ready by August 2014, it said.

These sheds will provide more covered space inside the port premises. The release said the increase in the handling of foodgrains such as maize and wheat has resulted in the demand for more covered area inside the port premises.

P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, laid the foundation stone for the project on Monday.

NORTH BRUNSWICK The addition of fences, sheds, pools and other accessory structures requires a municipal zoning permit and possibly a building permit in North Brunswick.

We are always supportive of residents seeking to enhance the quality of their home and their yards. But as a matter of public safety, community building and, quite frankly, to maintain peace with their neighbors, residents should always inquire and seek a permit before engaging in any property improvement, township Director of Community Development Michael Hritz said.

Of particular concern are new types of temporary above-ground pools that are being marketed at home centers and discount shopping stores. The metal frame pools may be seasonal and easily installed, but they require permits nonetheless.

The Uniform Construction Code regulates any pool that may contain more than 24 inches of water, according to Construction Official Tom Paun. These pools are popular and comparatively inexpensive, but they still pose a risk and dangers that must be properly inspected.

Township inspectors have identified an increasing number of these pools appearing in yards that are not properly fenced and are also in violation of setback requirements.

Residents should certainly seek proper permits before making a substantial investment in something they later find out doesnt comply with zoning regulations, Zoning Officer Mike Proietti said. We take no joy in requiring residents to dismantle something that theyve done to improve their yard, but without proper permits, they are assuming that risk, as well as a fine from the construction official.

An average zoning permit costs $30, which is applicable for most fences and small sheds.

Larger sheds and pools also require a building permit, which varies depending on the size and scope of the work being done, according to state statute.

The department has produced instruction sheets for fence, shed and pool installations. They are available in the department office on the second floor of the municipal building, 710 Hermann Road, and on the township website at northbrunswicknj.gov.
