Plans for extra broiler sheds in Low Dinsdale set for approval

COUNCILLORS have been advised to recommend plans to build sheds housing 128,000 chickens at a beauty spot.

The owners of Manor Farm, in Low Dinsdale, near Darlington, have submitted plans to Darlington Borough Council to erect three broiler units in fields next to the village.

The application has been recommended for approval by the councils planning officers ahead of a meeting next Wednesday (March 13).

If approved, the sheds, measuring 104m by 25m and housing 42,666 chickens each, would be built metres away from the farm's existing four broiler sheds, which currently produce about one million chickens every year.

The council has received eight objection letters from residents, and the Campaign to Protect Rural England has also objected to the development, saying the smell when the sheds are cleared at the end of the breeding cycle will have a negative impact on the area, as well as the increased traffic by lorries and impact of sheds on the landscape.

The Low Dinsdale Action Group, made up of residents from the village and the surrounding area, is also campaigning against the plans, claiming the smell from the existing four sheds is appalling and leaves them with no choice but to keep windows shut and not hang washing out on certain days.

However the report states the sheds would not have any negative impact on the appearance of the site and would not cause any harm to nearby listed buildings.

The plans have been recommended for approval, subject to a number of conditions. If these are followed, the report states: The development would not give rise to conditions that would prejudice the amenities of nearby residents or human rights considerations nor would it adversely affect environmental protection or highway safety considerations.

GRAHAM Fellows, creator of Sheffields sage man of song and life-skills tips John Shuttleworth, is thinking equally about a converted church and sheds at present.

On the one hand, Graham is undertaking the renovation and conversion of a church on Rousay, a hilly island three miles north of Orkneys mainland in the north of Scotland.

On the other, he is on his travels with alter ego Shuttleworths latest show, Out Of Our Sheds, whose progress around Britain brings him to the Grand Opera House, York, next Wednesday (March 6).

The Press caught up with Graham as he was about to catch the Rousay ferry after a day of Orkney paperwork. Ive been running around trying to finalise my grant, he says. Overseeing the renovation is very unromantic compared to my original thoughts on the project.

Then he perks up. Having said that, he says, suddenly as positive as his philosopher of the mundane, Shuttleworth, Its going to be wonderful and a big success with a recording studio and space for recuperation and itll be available for hire.

Then Graham thinks again. At least I hope itll become a success as a recording studio, but there are studios now closing down or turning into yoga centres. Hopefully people will find it appealing to record in the quiet up here because theres nothing to do on this island! he says.

Theres no ferry on a Sunday in the winter and the last ferry daily to get back to the mainland is 6.05pmbut it will be a lovely place to record and maybe that might be the only way some people might visit the Orkneys.

Graham says that to be honest I come up here to be on my own, but then he has to return to the world of John Shuttleworth, the former sweet factory security guard turned organ-playing club act.

The photographs will reveal if heat is coming from the outbuildings, indicating that they are inhabited.

Slough Borough Council believes that up to 3,000 people are being housed in the unsafe and primitive sheds with beds, which often lack heating or running water.

Rough sleepers have been ejected from bin sheds on the Tyers Estate in Bermondsey by officers from Grange ward's safer neighbourhoods team.

A police spokesman said that local officers received complaints from residents concerned that the bin sheds on the Tyers Estate were being used by rough sleepers and for drugs-related activity.

In response to these complaints Grange safer neighbourhoods team searched the bin sheds on Friday.

"The location was in a terrible state with rubbish, clothes and discarded needles," said the police spokesman.

"Two males and a dog were found inside; both males were stopped and given warnings not to return.

"Information on local homeless shelters in the area was given and arrangements were made for the clothes, rubbish and needles to be safely removed.

"In order to prevent further misuse, the bin sheds were secured shut by the local authority."

Some of Britain's most unusual shed designs have been unveiled as part of a competition, proving that for many people sheds have as much to do with escapism as DIY.
