Study sheds light on attraction between lovers - February 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Washington, Feb 10 (IANS) A new study by an American sociologist sheds light on what drives the attraction process in couples.

University of Notre Dame sociologist Elizabeth McClintock studied the impacts of physical attractiveness and age on mate selection and the effects of gender and income on relationships.

Her research offers new insight into why and when Cupid's arrow strikes.

In her study, "Handsome Wants as Handsome Does: Physical Attractiveness and Gender Differences in Revealed Sexual Preferences", published in Biodemography and Social Biology, McClintock examined the effects of physical attractiveness on young adults' sexual and romantic outcomes (number of partners, relationship status, timing of sexual intercourse), revealing the gender differences in preferences, according to Science Daily.

"Couple formation is often conceptualized as a competitive, two-sided matching process in which individuals implicitly trade their assets for those of a mate, trying to find the most desirable partner and most rewarding relationship that they can get given their own assets," McClintock said.

McClintock's study showed that just as good looks may be exchanged for status and financial resources, attractiveness may also be traded for control over the degree of commitment and progression of sexual activity.

Rogue landlords create 'sheds with beds' to illegally house migrant families - February 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

London's Newham Council targeted 42 slum properties since Sep. 2011 Wretched backyard and garden sheds 'little bigger than rabbit hutches' Enforcement notices order the owners to take down the illegal buildings

    By Mark Duell

    PUBLISHED: 07:07 EST, 12 February 2013 | UPDATED: 11:33 EST, 12 February 2013

Landlords in one of Britain's poorest areas are exploiting vulnerable families by building tiny 'sheds with beds' in back gardens to house them in.

Newham Council in East London has handed out 42 enforcement notices to slum property owners since September 2011, with the growing problem especially bad in the borough.

The wretched backyard and garden sheds, described as little bigger than rabbit hutches, have been described as dragging London back to the notorious Victorian slum tenements of the 19th century.

East End slums: This is the ramshackle inside of a shed on Tower Hamlets Road in Forest Gate, east London

More and more desperate migrant families have been forced to set up home in cramped wooden sheds crammed into small gardens, which are being rented out by unscrupulous private landlords.

They are ruthlessly exploiting a housing crisis and often charging hundreds of pounds a month for the dilapidated huts. Many shed homes have appeared in East Ham, Newham and Forest Gate.

Documentary sheds new light on Fermilab scientists - February 9, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

BATAVIA A new documentary sheds a new light on Fermilab scientists and the work they do.

Fermilab: Science at Work will be released on Tuesday. The documentary will be shown on Fermilabs YouTube channel and will be given away in DVD form to Fermilab visitors.

Fermilab contracted with Clayton Brown and Monica Long Ross of 137 Films to create a short film documenting life at Fermilab.

We tried to show scientists as real people, just like the rest of us, Ross said.

Ross and Brown are part of the team that made the 2008 film The Atom Smashers, which spotlighted Fermilab and the search for the elusive Higgs boson, believed to give mass to matter that makes up the universe.

In the opening moments of Fermilab: Science at Work, Fermilab particle physicist Brendan Casey is shown in his Batavia home with his wife, Melissa, and their children. Casey hopes that people who watch the movie have a better understanding of the people who work at Fermilab.

The scientists and all the employees at Fermilab are just part of the community, he said.

Casey hopes the documentary will generate enough interest in the general public that people will want to visit Fermilab.

Its surprising how often I talk to people in the community and find out they have never been to Fermilab, he said. This is a laboratory of their neighbors, and the public is welcome.

Casey said he is pleased with how the documentary turned out.

Illegal immigrants living in 'beds in sheds' arrested in clampdown - February 8, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Thursday, 07 Feb 2013

    17 illegal immigrants arrested

Immigration Minister Mark Harper witnessed first hand the work being done by the UK Border Agency to crack down on the problem of illegal immigrants living in 'beds in sheds'.

The minister was joined by his colleague, Housing Minister Mark Prisk, as part of a cross government strategy to clampdown on rogue landlords who rent out these buildings illegally.

Acting on intelligence, and with assistance from Ealing Council and the Metropolitan Police Service, officers entered seven properties in Southall, West London, around 6am today.

Rogue landlords often target vulnerable people, placing them in overcrowded or poor quality accommodation. In some places people are living in squalid outbuildings or makeshift accommodation known as beds in sheds.

Immigration Minister Mark Harper said: 'We are determined to crack down on immigration offenders and anyone found living or working here illegally is liable to being detained and removed. We will help those who wish to leave voluntarily but will enforce the removal of those who refuse.

'Operations like this show our determination to do whatever is necessary, working alongside local authorities and police, to enforce our laws against those who are in the UK illegally.'

Housing Minister Mark Prisk said: 'We're determined to shut down the criminal landlords that run these beds in sheds and exploit some of the most vulnerable people in society.

'Councils facing this problem in their area have a range of powers at their disposal and have been given a share of 1.8million funding to shut these unsafe and illegal outbuildings down. I want to see councils working with organisations like the UK Border Agency and others to tackle this problem once and for all.'

No more dogs in Eastern Market sheds - February 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

DETROIT (WXYZ) - When you head to Detroit's Eastern Market this weekend, organizers are asking that you leave one thing at home: Your dog. The market will begin to enforce a ban on dogs in the market's sheds.

In an announcement made Thursday, the Eastern Market Corporation said they would begin to enforce a policy that had already been posted on signs around the market.

Until now, the ban on dogs inside the market's sheds had not been enforced. That will change on Saturday, February 2, 2013.

"Eastern Market has several licensed food vendors in our sheds and stalls," the statement said. "We want to keep them around, so Fido has to go."

Market organizers point out that state regulations prohibit dogs and other animals from being near food establishments.

Organizers say they will make an exception for service dogs.

FULL STATEMENT FROM EASTERN MARKET CORPORATION:

    Effective February 2nd,

EMC will begin to enforce a policy of no dogs under the sheds or in vendor stalls and we wanted to give a heads up to all of our Friends. This policy will seems new to many because, although we had signs posted, we didnt do much to enforce the rule until now. Animals are not permitted in or near food establishments licensed by the MDARD (Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development). And, as many of you know Eastern Market has several licensed food vendors in our sheds and stalls. The burritos, Mac n Cheese, coffee, beignets and other delights provided by these vendors have been a hit with our customers. We want to keep them around, so Fido has to go.

Oil fire destroys sheds, may have contaminated ground - February 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Tuesday night fire destroyed two sheds in West Manchester Township which housed containers of crude oil. (Bil Bowden photo)

An oil fire at a West Manchester Township farmhouse on Tuesday destroyed two sheds and might have contaminated the ground.

The fire at a rental property at 1545 East Berlin Road was caused when the resident did a "very crude field test" on waste oil that is burned in a furnace to heat the home, said Dave Nichols, the township fire chief.

Before taking the oil into the home, the man conducted the test in which he put a flame just above the surface of the oil to make sure no other flammable liquids that burn at lower temperatures, such as gasoline, are mixed in with the oil, Nichols said.

The man conducted the test on oil that, unbeknownst to him, was contaminated with a secondary flammable liquid, touching off Tuesday's blaze. He was not injured.

Nichols said it's not known what was mixed in with the oil.

Fire crews were dispatched just before 2 p.m.

Possible contamination: The waste oil was stored in 50-gallon drums in the sheds, which were destroyed in the fire, Nichols said.

On Wednesday, an environmental consultant was at the scene to determine how much, if any, oil contaminated the ground and to start to clean up the mess.

"I'm sure there will be some ground contamination," Nichols said.

Men’s Sheds share funds - February 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

AN injection of funds will allow Mens Sheds across Victoria to increase programs that "actively engage men in their local communities", says the Victorian Mens Shed Association (VMSA) president Paul Sladdin.

Men's Sheds around the state will share in a total of $700,000 in funding from the Victorian Government for refurbishment grants, Minister for Community Services Mary Wooldridge announced last week.

Grants of up to $30,000 per shed were made available to incorporated not-for-profit organisations and local government authorities that auspiced existing Mens Sheds.

Grant recipients were required to provide funding or in-kind support towards the project, taking the total value of the refurbishments to $1.2 million.

The grants, under the new Strengthening Mens Sheds Program, will allow for the redevelopment of 36 existing sheds to meet increased community demand for activities and occupational health and safety, and disability guidelines.

Examples of successful initiatives funded under the latest round include:

including dust extraction as well as electrical, plumbing and structural projects.

The Mens Shed movement has come a long way over the past five years, with more than 200 sheds operating across Victoria, Ms Wooldridge said.

The government recognises the significant role Mens Sheds play in their local communities through engaging a wide range of men, including those with disability, farmers, war veterans, retirees and the unemployed.

"They give local men the chance to meet and talk, work on valuable community projects, get involved in their community and learn about important health and wellbeing issues.
