WWI graffiti sheds light on soldiers' experience - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

NAOURS, France (AP) A headlamp cuts through the darkness of a rough-hewn passage 100 feet underground to reveal an inscription: "James Cockburn 8th Durham L.I."

It's cut so clean it could have been left yesterday. Only the date next to it April 1, 1917 roots it in the horrors of World War I.

The piece of graffiti is just one of nearly 2,000 century-old inscriptions that have recently come to light in Naours, a two-hour drive north of Paris. Many marked a note for posterity in the face of the doom that trench warfare a few dozen miles away would bring to many.

"It shows how soldiers form a sense of place and an understanding of their role in a harsh and hostile environment," said historian Ross Wilson of Chichester University in Britain.

Etchings, even scratched bas-reliefs, were left by many soldiers during the war. But those in Naours "would be one of the highest concentrations of inscriptions on the Western Front" that stretches from Switzerland to the North Sea, said Wilson.

The site's proximity to the Somme battlefields, where more than a million men were killed or wounded, adds to the discovery's importance. "It provides insight into how they found a sense of meaning in the conflict," said Wilson.

Naours' underground city is a 3-kilometer (2-mile) -long complex of tunnels with hundreds of chambers dug out over centuries in the chalky Picardy plateau. During the Middle Ages villagers took shelter there from marauding armies crisscrossing northern France. By the 18th century the quarry's entrance was blocked off and forgotten.

In 1887 a local priest rediscovered the site and it eventually became a tourist attraction. That's what likely drew the soldiers to it during the war, said Gilles Prilaux, an archaeologist for France's national archaeology institute. He began a three-year study of the tunnels last July, intending to focus on the site's medieval past only to stumble upon this more recent slice of history.

"It was a big surprise" Prilaux said of the discovery of the World War I graffiti left by soldiers from Australia, Britain, Canada and the U.S.

Soldiers left similar inscriptions in tunnels at Arras and Vimy. But unlike those sites, Naours is well back from the front lines. And it wasn't known to have been used as a shelter or hospital like other Western Front quarries.

NEW INFORMATION: Fire damages home, sheds in Trempealeau Co. - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

TOWN OF TREMPEALEAU, Wis. (WEAU) -- Harsh wind conditions spread a wildfire across miles of farmland Wednesday night. It happened just off West Prairie road in Trempealeau County. When crews arrived just before 6 P.M., multiple sheds, along with the side of the house were on fire.

Due to the heavy winds, the fire traveled across this Highway, into neighboring fields.

The Trempealeau County Sheriff's Department says "the fire started in one wall of the residence on the property. No one was home at the time the fire was called in."

Although no one was harmed or injured, the Tri-State Ambulance was called in to assist firefighters throughout the night.

We worked with fire command and set up a medical command and assisted the first responder group in setting up a rest and rehab center and station for the firefighters involved, says Paramedic Chris Molldrem.

There were a few of the gentlemen who were fighting the fire who needed rest and rehab. We monitored their vital signs and made sure they were hydrated and in good shape and returned them to the fire. It went out without any incident, there were no injuries and everyone was returned to duty, says Molldrem.

Close to 10 other first response teams worked with crews Wednesday night. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

------- WHITEHALL, Wis. (WEAU) -- Raging winds helped spread a house fire to area sheds and fields in Trempealeau County Wednesday night.

The Trempealeau County Sheriff's Office says six firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, after fighting the fire that initially started at N13491 West Prairie Road in the Town of Trempealeau.

Crews arrived at the scene just after 5:30 p.m., and found four sheds fully engulfed. Fire also started in one wall of the residence on the property, and spread to multiple neighboring fields.

International trailer for Tomorrowland sheds light on Disneys mysterious sci-fi film - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Most movie trailers tend to recycle the same footage over and over again, so its usually worth noting when a preview offers up a significant amount of fresh footage for an upcoming film especially when the project is as shrouded in mystery as Disneys sci-fi adventureTomorrowland.

A new, international trailer forTomorrowlanddebuted online this week, and the brief preview of the film is surprisingly packed with scenes that didnt appear in any of the previous teasersfor the film. More importantly, however, is that the new scenes provide quite a bit of context for the film and its fantastic sci-fi premise.

While we wont go intotoo much detail about what happens in the trailer (so as to avoid spoilers for those who want to preserve the mystery), the footagedoes hint that the film will be somewhat self-aware, with the Disney theme parks and specifically, the Tomorrowland attraction that inspired the film playing a role in the story. The trailer even features a mention of Walt Disney himself.
