From the Archives, 1982: New star extends universe by 4500 million light years – Sydney Morning Herald - March 27, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Such is the distance of the quasar code-named PKS 2000-330 that the light picked up by the scientists at the CSIRO's radio telescope at Parkes, New South Wales, last week would have left the star-like object 20,000 million years ago.

Before this, the most distant object known was a quasar 15,500 million light years away, discovered by American scientists nine years ago.

Announcing the discovery yesterday, the Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Mr Thomson, said it opened a new debate on the extent and age of the universe and rekindled the controversy about the nature of quasars.

Quasars are the most distant and luminous bodies known. More than 200 have been discovered, but the source of their intense radiation remains unknown.

They have spectrums the wavelength of light with a big "red shift." The red shift is directly proportional to distance. The, farther the shift towards the longest (red) wavelength the farther the object is from Earth.

    Loading

For 10 years, scientists have been trying to discover an object with a red shift greater than 3.53, the measurement of a quasar found in 1972.

"The lack of success had led to the idea building up strongly that 3.5 represented the edge of the universe. The theory was developed more or less by default, as no one had managed to find a more distant object," says Dr David Jauncey, of the CSIRO division of radiophysics.

The quasar discovered last week has a red shift of 3.78. It was found by Dr Bruce Peterson (of the Mount Stromlo, ACT, and Siding Spring, NSW, observatories), Dr Ann Savage (of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh) and Dr Jauncey and Dr Alan Wright of the CSIRO.

Dr Jauncey says the controversy referred to by Mr Thomson has been the question of whether the red shift is a true measure of the distance of a quasar. He says he and his colleagues have not merely found one object. "It's a big jump in the red shift, and we now believe we know how to find more of these quasars at this distance, if they exist," he says.

    Loading

The idea of a flat universe, an edge, has gone. "The earliest questions were: How big is the Earth? How big is the Sun? How big is the universe? We can perhaps measure all three now," he said last night.

But it would take a radio telescope perhaps as big as Australia, or the world, to determine accurate the size of "PKS 2000-330". Measurements of closer quasars indicated they had "central engines" the driving force a few light years across.

An accurate radio position of the newest quasar was determined using the Tidbinbilla radio interferometer near Canberra. The Siding Spring installation near Coonabarabran, in NSW, was used to identify the object.

Finally, another telescope at Siding Spring obtained a spectrum which proved that the quasar was farther away than other known objects within the universe.

The Road Away from Rome: A massive renovation on a Springwater bungalow – simcoe.com - March 27, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Gleaming porcelain tile in the foyer now offsets the black accents delivering a fresh, clean look. Even the doors on the three-car garage were changed. Terry replaced all three with a modern profile with four lights in each door (Protech Overhead Doors.)

The kitchen was the biggest nightmare in the renovation, by far. But it wasnt the structural surprises that caused it. It was a difficult contractor. A buddy had asked Terry if he could throw some work to a friend. Terry was aware of a previous job completed by this contractor and agreed.

He started and everything looked good in the beginning, says Terry. But then he stopped showing up for work. I tried to be patient. Id feed him money to move to the next step, hed come in for a few days then not show up again.

These delays upended Terrys entire timeline. The trim carpenters couldnt get their work done and each delay tumbled on down the line toppling everyones schedule. Electricians, plumbers, and installers all experienced setbacks. A renovation that was scheduled for 12 weeks now stretched into nine months, which meant that Terry had to move into the property mid-renovation, which he had not planned on doing.

Unfortunately, its a common scenario experienced by many homeowners. The difficult decision to cut your losses and move on weighs heavy. But Terry finally made the hard decision to fire him. We didnt even get all the materials we paid for, he says. He left me high and dry. Fortunately, Infinite Designs and Interiors came to the rescue and brought the kitchen renovation spectacularly to the finish line.

The curvy cabinets are now gone and two floor-to-ceiling banks of white and wood accented cabinets and drawers stock everything a gourmet chef could dream of. A four-seater kitchen island with quartz countertop acts as the sole division between the great room and kitchen now. Lit by round glass bowl pendants, the kitchen has become a focal point, not a hidden grotto.

Terry opted for high-end Thermador industrial appliances, with 6 burners on the range, a grill and two ovens, one steam, one convection, plus a warming tray and a 40-inch seamless hood over the range. A Miele built-in coffeemaker and 39 dB silent Bosch dishwasher fill out the equipment. You cant even hear that dishwasher, says Terry. You wouldnt know it was running unless you saw the light indicator on the floor. (TA Appliances sourced the appliances except for the range hood which came from Vancouver.)

With black fixtures and white walls in Sherwin Williams Eider White, using Benjamin Moore paint, the congested look is gone and the contemporary transformation, complete.

The basement, I didnt touch much, says Terry. That level was already an entertainers paradise with a games room with pool and foosball, wine room, lounge, wet bar, fitness area, office and extra bedroom and washroom perfect for teenagers. The only change made here was the addition of a home theatre, which Terry outfitted with lounges on risers for unobstructed viewing.

We had my daughters 25th birthday down there, says Terry. There were easily fifty people. The theme was drinks and food from around the world. We had stations all throughout the basement, the Mexico stand had margaritas and nacho dips. France had champagne and a cheese platter. Spain had tapas and sangria. For USA, it was sliders and beer and so on.

The exterior of the property continues to be party central, with a pool, hot tub, outdoor kitchen, cabana, fire pit and even a standalone fountain. The family has held catered pig roasts there for sixty people with ping pong and horseshoe tournaments followed by bonfires. Its a big property, says Terry, Truly an entertainers dream house. Weve had a great time here.

4 Quinn Street in Springwater is now on the market, represented by Sothebys International Realty Canada.

EnerDynamic Update on the Asset Value of Ghana Joint Venture Property – Yahoo Finance - February 26, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

NIAGARA FALLS, ON / ACCESSWIRE / February 26, 2020 / EnerDynamic Hybrid Technologies Corp. (TSXV:EHT) ("EHT") is pleased to provide an important update to shareholders on the valuation of its assets involved in the Dawa Industrial Housing Project in Ghana, in which EHT's current joint venture with United Construction and Investments (the "UCI-EHT JV") is a primary participant.

UCI-EHT Ghana Project 100,000 houses at Dawa Industrial Area.

In EHT's February 19, 2020, news release, we stated that the real property the Government of Ghana granted to the UCI-EHT JV, which is now owned by the JV, has been formally appraised at $64.3M USD ($73.3M CAD). As previously announced, this property will be the underpinning of the security for the construction of the homes to be built by the UCI-EHT JV We want/wish to reiterate that the UCI-EHT JV is 70% owned by EHT, which means that this (real) property is now an asset of the JV company, and therefore, EHT can now show this entire value amount on EHT's consolidated financial statements going forward. EHT will, through the course of the UCI-EHT JV, reduce the asset value in correlation with sales recorded on the income statement as it builds houses and sells them back to the Government of Ghana, as per EHT's contract therewith. As sales are recorded by the UCI-EHT JV, EHT will continue to make margin on the sale of the houses themselves, as well as on the materials EHT delivers to the UCI-EHT JV. Through this promising development, EHT has strengthened its balance sheet, while at the same time recorded a significant pipeline of sales, which we look forward to delivering on with our partners in Ghana.

    About EnerDynamic Hybrid Technologies

EHT delivers proprietary, turn-key energy solutions which are intelligent, bankable and sustainable. EHT's expertise includes the development of its ENERTEC module structures with full integration of smart energy solutions. Using a proprietary skin and foam core that is stronger than traditional wood or steel structural insulated panels, EHT provides exceptional thermal energy efficiency in modular homes, cold storage facilities, residential/commercial out buildings and emergency/temporary shelters. EHT works with its partners worldwide to erect the buildings on-site utilizing EHT staff and local crews. In addition to traditional support to established electrical networks, ENERTEC buildings excel where no electrical grid exists.

    About ENERTEC

The EHT advanced ENERTEC Modular Wall and Roof System uses a proprietary skin and foam core that is stronger and more energy efficient than traditional wood or steel structures providing the highest ratings for energy efficiency. EHT works with its partners worldwide to erect the buildings on-site utilizing EHT staff and local crews. After installation, each structure can be furnished and finished to meet the customer's requirements including siding, tile, kitchens and bathrooms or segregated commercial rooms. The finished wall product can be shipped on pallets and delivered via rail, truck or water in standard formats.

At the core of the ENERTEC product line is the ENERTEC Embedded Solar Roof Module. Solar cells can be embedded in a proprietary fireproof skin resulting in substantial cost savings by eliminating heavy glass panels and aluminum racking required for traditional solar panels. Two barriers to greater adoption of solar energy are weight limitations of the roof on which solar panels could be deployed and onerous shipping and labour costs. A lighter product at a better price point will open a larger market for solar due to the faster return of capital investment especially for rural and remote users looking to go off-grid. Furthermore, the entire EHT embedded solar roof becomes a massive solar panel capable of producing significantly more energy than the home requires, allowing the structure to then become an important source of power for the local micro grid or large battery storage systems.

CertainTeed eyes growth with reinforced vinyl siding – Plastics News - February 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

CertainTeed Corp. is targeting wood planks and the fast-growing fiber cement business for its new reinforced vinyl siding, Certaplank.

The vinyl cladding looks like hardwood, with a lightweight 7-inch slim profile that is rigid.

"Certaplank is the result of many years of research and product development," said Kara Radcliffe, director of vinyl siding product management at CertainTeed. "Fiber cement and wood planks are cumbersome and heavy, and they require special tools, extra crew and safety gear to install."

Ease of installation is a big issue on construction, and manufacturers of plastic building products are playing it up.

According to CertainTeed, because Certaplank is lighter and more flexible than fiber cement or natural wood siding, contractors can hand-unload the vinyl siding without any special equipment, storage or stacking requirements. Also, there are no restrictions from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on handling or cutting the material outdoors.

CertainTeed is offering Certaplank in 18 colors with a wood grain finish.

CertainTeed, based in Malvern, Pa., ranks No. 5 in the latest Plastics News ranking of pipe, profile and tubing extruders.

Sandcastle Homes completes renovation of HomeAid project in the Third Ward – Chron.com - February 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published 11:00pm CST, Saturday, February 8, 2020

Renovation work has been completed on a HomeAid Houston project for Agape Development. HomeAid, a 501(c)(3) charity of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA), partnered with custom builder and GHBA member Sandcastle Homes, to make improvements to Paris House, a 950-square-foot house that was converted into an office and counseling center for Agape Development. The enhancements will provide a more modern space for day-to-day operations and provide a place for work placement assistance and counseling for the young men and women working with Agape.

Sandcastle Homes, led by Nicole Keown and assisted by Steven Speer, project manager, spearheaded the work as part of their commitment to improving the lives of young men and women in the Third Ward. Keown and Speer began by handling much of the demolition themselves as they removed the exterior siding, gutted the interior and loaded trash in preparation for the upcoming improvements.

Additional work included removal of deteriorated materials inside and outside of the building for full restoration; replacing windows and drywall, installation of paneling, new trim and interior doors and cabinets, refinishing the interiors of a bathroom and breakroom, providing fixture replacements and new countertops. Work also included installing new flooring, new paint and hardware and replacing the fencing on the property.

Agape identifies existing properties that, in some cases, have been abandoned or are in total disrepair and refurbishes them. The houses provide stable housing for young adults who are in crisis or as in the Paris House, a place for education and life skills training. At the same time, these renovated houses revitalize the community.

With its location within Houstons historic Third Ward, the faith-based Agape Developments Gateway Houses are part of a residential program to help 18-25 year olds make the transition to healthy adulthood by assisting with housing, utilities, food and transportation while providing counseling, job preparation and guidance in continued education.

I really enjoyed the project and the overall outcome of the building, said Keown. This was one of the rare opportunities where I could roll up my sleeves and do some of the work myself. Steven Speer and I were inspired by the kids we saw, who were being helped through Agape. We were proud to work on this from the Sandcastle Home side and to represent HomeAid and their mission.

The following were companies who donated to the renovations: EC Contractors provided sheetrock, paint, exterior siding, and window replacement; Sandcastle Homes provided interior demoltion; Juan Hurtado donated carpentry; Houston Carpet Service provided the flooring; Western Pacific donated building materials. Other vendors included Kent Moore Cabinets; Rolando Delgado Landscaping; Coastal Plumbing, and Aztec Glass and Mirror.

HomeAid Houston has been building transformational housing for homeless care agencies throughout Houston and surrounding counties since 2003. For more information about HomeAid Houston, visit http://www.homeaidhouston.org or call 281-970-8970.

Parks Office Reports Busy, Successful Year – More to Come in 2020 – The Missourian - February 6, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Washington Parks Department started 2019 with a new parks and recreation director Wayne Dunker, who assumed his new duties Jan. 7.

Dunker has been working in this field all of his career, dating back to 2000. He moved around the St. Louis area working for different parks departments before coming to Washington.

Last year was a busy year, he said. I had a lot of things come in and out of this office, but now I have a better feel of things.

With one year under his belt, Dunker said he has a better handle on a lot of things, including the budget, the different events and the Washington Town & Country Fair.

Dunker did admit that the Washington Parks Department is a little busier than he expected, but he was able to accomplish quite a list in 2019.

Dunkers first task was updating athletic and facility fees. His office looked at comparable facilities and organizations, evaluated pricing and updated the fees accordingly. This also included fee increases for rentals for the senior center, pavilion, fairgrounds.

Several roofs in the park system have been replaced in the past year. This roof replacement was an ongoing project that started in 2018 after storms in 2017 damaged facilities.

What was most pleasing about the project was after the roofs were replaced the department had an excess of funding and was able to make other improvements. This included a renovation to the main park pavilion which now has new siding, paint, suffixing, gutters, as well as a new roof.

Another highlight was the opening of the front nine holes of Busch Creek Disc Golf at Burger Park and a new trail was installed with 1,700 square feet of wood fence around the quarry at Miller Post Nature Reserve, which is open.

The parks department also updated city hall with LED lighting, new windows and HVAC improvements. The lighting also was updated at the police station, library and fire houses.

Dunker said Washington participated in the America in Bloom Competition for the ninth year. The city finished first in the 12,000-14,000 population category and received special recognition for its flowers.

Some other accomplishments in 2019 included renovations at the South Point Dog Park, such as parking lot paving, sidewalk installation and landscaping; resolving the drainage issue at Lakeview baseball soccer field; receiving the Tree City USA award for the 14th year; installing an informational kiosk on the riverfront west trailhead; and other renovations and improvements in the Washington area.

Washington residents can expect to see several changes and exciting in the new year, according to Dunker.

The America in Bloom National Symposium will be held in Washington Oct. 1, which is expected to bring between 200 to 250 people to the city for the day.

The back nine holes at Busch Creek Disc Golf Course will open later this year and there will be new playgrounds in the main park, renovations to the Optimist skate park and updated and revised park entry signs.

The department also plans to install large and small dog fencing at South Point Dog Park.

The fountain at the Farmers Market parking lot will receive an upgrade this year as well.

Dunker explained that weather and river levels permitting, renovations will take place on the eastern portion of Rotary Riverfront Trail after MoDOT completes its work, which will allow the trail to reopen.

A big picture idea that the department is working on is continuing to evaluate how Washington can connect to the Katy Trail, Dunker said.

Epic and about 60 hospital chains come out against rules that would make it easier to share medical info – CNBC - February 6, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Judith Faulkner, CEO of healthcare IT giant Epic Systems.

    Source: Epic Systems

Epic Systems CEO Judy Faulkner recently urged some of the largest health systems in the country to sign a letter opposing proposed rules designed to make it easier for patients to obtain their medical information and share it with apps.

About 60 of these health systems have signed it.

The letter, which was obtained by CNBC, was addressed to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and opposed proposed rules designed to help medical information flow more easily between health systems and patients. The rules also aim to make clinical data accessible through application programming interfaces (APIs).

Epic, which is privately held, sells its electronic medical record software to hospitals across the country and is one of the largest health-technology companies in the U.S. An Epic installation is a major undertaking and can cost upwards of $1 billion for a major health system to implement.

Epic's CEO Judy Faulkner previously urged health care executives to take a stand with her: "HHS needs to hear from you so they understand that you feel these issues are important," it says. "Very little time is left."

A spokesperson for HHS told CNBC that it did indeed receive the letter. "We appreciate all stakeholder feedback as we continue to finalize the rules," they said. "Our ultimate goal is to ensure that patients are able to easily access their electronic medical records."

The largest technology companies, alongside patient advocates and caregivers, have taken the opposite stance and have spoken out in favor of the rules. Apple, Microsoft and Google recently joined a call with a non-profit called Carin Alliance to discuss ways to get the rule finalized and released. These companies favor the rules, in part because greater interoperability between systems that store medical records could help them move into the $3.5 trillion health care sector.

"There are many health systems that have deep concerns regarding the rule, and they've shared those concerns with HHS," Epic said in a statement to CNBC. "We are supportive of the goals of the proposed regulations, but we believe that important changes must be made to the rule before it becomes final in order to protect the privacy of patients and their personal health information. We appreciate the work that HHS is doing to incorporate different perspectives and ensure that the final rule is a good one."

The letter reads, in part, "While we support HHS' goal of empowering patients with their health data and reducing costs through the 21st Century Cures Act, we are concerned that ONC's Proposed Rule on interoperability will be overly burdensome on our health system and will endanger patient privacy. Specifically, the scope of regulated data, the timeline for compliance, and the significant costs and penalties will make it extraordinarily difficult for us to comply."

The letter goes on to recommend some changes, including more clarity around health information related to family members, and a longer timeline -- at least 12 months to prepare and 36 months for "development of new technology required by the rule."

It was signed by health systems including Ardent Health Services, Atrius Health in Massachussets, Bay Health in Delaware, NYU Langone Health in New York, Parkview Health in Indiana and Ohio, University Health System in Texas and UW Health in Wisconsin among others. Several life sciences companies also signed it, including Exact Sciences, maker of a diagnostic test for colorectal cancer.

A handful of organizations were also listed as sending their own separate letter.

One doctor who signed says he shared Epic's privacy concerns as the number of proposed medical apps skyrockets.

"There are tens of thousands of health care apps," said Neil Calman, MD, chairman of family medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and president of the institute for family health, in an interview.

"Getting these big computer systems to communicate in a predictable and secure way took a decade and now people are writing these apps in all different languages. There's no possible way a system that has been in development for decades now could all interface with all these apps and keep information secure. This needs a lot more thought, and more structure and regulation."

Some health IT experts note that the letter has not been signed by some of the largest health systems in the Epic ecosystem, and they say that's significant.

"Their absence represents a thundering silence," said David Brailer, the first National Health Information Technology Coordinator, appointed by George W. Bush. "Many health systems are quietly discussing how the data access and data fluidity actually benefits them in the long-run."

Here is the full list of health systems and health companies that signed the letter, not including those who chose to send their own:

Access Community Health Centers; Community Health Center Network, Alameda Health Consortium; Altru Health System; Atrius Health; Adventist Health Portland; Affirmant Health Partners; Lovelace Health System; Arc; UT Health Athens; Ardent Health Services; Bay Health; Buffalo Medical Group; Christie Clinic; Deaconess Health System; Genesis Healthcare System; Catholic Health; Community Health Network; Exact Sciences, Group Health Cooperative, South Central Wisconsin; Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates; Confluence Health; Fresenius Medical Care; Gundersen Health System; Guthrie; HonorHealth; Institute for Family Health; Mercy; UnityPoint Health; Hospital Sisters; HSHS Wisconsin; Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics; Mercy Care; VHS; HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital; HSHS St Joseph's; HSHS Illinois; Mary Washington Healthcare; Mercy Health Services; Middlesex Health; Beth Israel Lahey Health, Mt. PHOTOS: Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Guest Cabins Fully Enclosed in Preparation for Interior Screen Installation; Latest Work on Arrival Terminal… - January 28, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

This post may contain affiliate links; please read the disclosure for more information.

As much more than a hotel, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will be avacation experience unlike anything Disney has ever created. The hotel will offer a two-night itinerary where guests become immersed in their own Star Wars story. We are just as anxious as you to see it complete, so we stopped to see whats new since our last update.

As you approach the hotel, it looks kind of drab. But spaceships arent usually pretty. We do expect more trees and greenery planted to camouflage the area.

The first thing youll see when passing by is the Galactic Starcruiser Terminal. There has been a lot of progress on this area, which serves as both the main entrance where guests arrive/unload. (Do note that this is different from where guests will be transported to Batuuvia intergalactic transports.) Workers are getting ready to build out the overhang, and the shape of the entrance is starting to grow.

This is concept art of what the terminal will look when complete. You can already see the geometric pieces in our photos.

Moving further down the hotel, we saw that most of the purple siding we previously reported on is now covered with gray concrete. The rounded metal archway you see is where the intergalactic transports will wait to depart to Batuu. Not much work has been done to this section.

Continuing along, this is where the actual guest cabins (i.e., rooms) are located. Scaffolding still stands, and all the windows have been closed off as expected. Rather than windows, guests will see screens reflecting the galaxy, which will make you feel as if youre really in space.

This makes me a little claustrophobic. But Ive done an inside cabin on the Disney Cruise Line that has the magical porthole screens, so I think I can make it through. But really I wont have to worry about that, as I doubt Ill be able to afford staying here.

Even from further away on a guest road near Disneys Hollywood Studios, you can see the hotels theming in the distance.

Garage door replacement among highest return on investment

REMODELING Magazine released its 33rd annual Cost vs. Value Report that found exterior improvement projects yield the greatest return on investments. In fact, nine of the 10 leading investments were exterior home improvements, with the exception of a minor kitchen remodel. The leading returns were primarily siding, doors or decks.

"As in years past, the national averages for exterior replacements outperformed those of larger discretionary remodeling projects," said Clayton DeKorne, Editor-in-Chief of REMODELING Magazine. "Exterior facade facelifts improve the curb appeal and makes a great first impression as buyers approach the home, that translates to real dollars at the closing table which is why we see such tangible returns on that investment."

According to the 2020 report, the overall cost-to-value ratio stands at 63.7%, down from last year, and well below the decade-high of 71.2% in 2014. As in prior years, there are significant variations in return in different regions. The average regional payback for the 22 projects in the 2020 Cost vs. Value Report ranges from a high of 132% for a garage door replacement in the East South-Central region to a low of 40% for an upscale master suite addition in the same region.

The 2020 report surveyed nearly 1,400 full-time real estate professionals, each with a network of more than 100 consumers, about returns for 22 home improvement projects in more than 100 U.S. markets.
